Lily thought his cup would be less prone(易于)to spills if it had “legs”, so she drew a picture of such a cup for her dad, Joe Born. “He took it seriously and told me, ‘That’s your invention. Sign and date it’, which I did,” she said. And she made a hand-moldable(手塑的)plastic prototype(样品) . Later, Lily noticed her dad was always spilling coffee on his computer’s keyboard, so she made him a ceramic(陶制的)version of her cup with legs. Her family enjoyed using the cups, but she was struggling in school. “I was afraid of failing fourth grade. It had kind of destroyed my confidence, to be honest,” Lily said. “One day I asked my dad, ‘ What am I good at?’He asked me if I wanted to put the cups into production. I think he had an idea which would make me see being an inventor was a real thing and something to be proud of.” The Borns flew to Jingdezhen, China to find a factory that would produce the cups and make more prototypes. “We’ve sold something like 1,000 cups,” Lily said. “People are buying them for elderly relatives and people with mobility issue.” As for Lily, doing business at such a young age helped her overcome her shyness. “Watching Lily blossom over this whole adventure has been the biggest thrill for me as a dad,” Joe said. “I just can’t put into words how good it feels to see her have confidence.” 4. C Have you ever thought about what determines the way we are when we grow up? Remember the TV program Seven Up? It started following the lives of a group of children in 1973. We first meet them as wide- eyed seven-olds and catch up with them at seven- year intervals: nervous 14- year- olds, serious 21- year- olds and then grown- ups. Some of the stories are inspiring, others sad, but what is interesting in almost all the cases is the way in which the children’s early hopes and dreams are shown in their future lives. For example, at seven, Tony is a lively child who says he wants to become a sportsman or a taxi driver. When he grows up, he goes on to do both. How about Niki? She says, “I would like to find out about the moon.” And she goes on to become a space scientist. As a child, soft- spoken Bruce says he wants to help “ poor children” and ends up teaching in India. But if the lives of all the children had followed this pattern, the program would have been far less interesting than it actually was. It was the children whose childhood did not prepare them for what was to come that made the program so interesting. Where did their ideas come from about what they wanted to do when they grew up? Are children swayed by what their parents do, by what they see on television or by what their teachers say? How great is the effect of a single important event? Many film directors, including Steven Spielberg, say that an early visit to the cinema was the turning point in their lives. Dr. Margaret McAllister, who has done a lot of research in this area, thinks that the major factors are parents, friends and their wider society. 8. What are the examples in Paragraph 2 meant to show? A. Many people’s childhood hopes are related to their future jobs. B. There are many poor children in India who need help C. Children have different dreams about their future. D. A lot of people are very sad in their childhood. 9. What does the underlined word “swayed” mean in the last paragraph? A. helped B. improved C. affected D. attracted 10. What is Spielberg’s story meant to show? A. Going to a movie at an early age helps a child learn much B. A single childhood event can help a child grow up properly. C. Parents and friends can help a child grow up properly. D. Films have more influence on a child than their teachers do. 11. What does the text mainly discuss? A. New ways to make a TV program interesting B. The importance of TV programs to children C. Different ways to make childhood dreams come true. D. The influence of childhood experience on future lives. D It's common knowledge that some countries have higher life expectancies than others, but the city you live in can also affect your health. Some cities are hard on their residents. In places with poor city planning, for example Lagos, which was called out recently by the Economist Intelligence Unit, public spaces are few, making outdoor activities hard. Lack of infrastructure(基础设施) blocks the streets with cars and the air with pollutants, and residents work long hours for little money. These are just some of the factors added up by Spotahome, a rental agency. They've analyzed data from a range of sources, including the World Health Organization, TripAdvisor and the CIA World Factbook to score each city on health, gym availability and quality, life expectancies, obesity, green space and other elements to make list to work out which are the world's healthiest cities. The list is certainly Eurocentric and sunshine is seen as a positive factor. It does go some way toward suggesting which cities are getting it right in providing a good life for their residents. It may not be surprising to learn that most of the healthiest cities are in northern Europe, known for its people-first approach to city planning. The cities of Australia and Canada also do well. However, the first American city is only in 34th place. The U. K. doesn't fare too well either--- its only city in the top50 list is London, in 40th. Whether you're planning a wholesome holiday, or simply wondering what your city can do better in its quest for happy citizens, the list of the 50 healthiest cities will give you pause for thought about the future of city planning. Here are the slender, healthy-eating, clean-aired cities that are getting it right. 12. What plays the key role in building a healthy city according to the text? A. Local culture. B. City planning. C. Economic condition. D. Geographical position. 13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. What Spotahome discovered in the recent study. B. The reasons why Spotahome carried out the study. C. How the list of healthiest cities came into being. D. The places where the data of the study came from. 14. What can we learn from the text? A. Cities in America lack enough sunshine. B. The U. K. ranked higher than America in the list. C. Australia and Canada have the best city planning. D. Some people in Lagos may live a poor life. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. The Best Places to Have a Rich Life B. The Happiest Lifestyle in the World C. The City Factors Affecting Your Health D. The Nice Countries to Keep Healthy 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Do you ever get the feeling that your parents just don’t listen to you? When you talk to them, they may give the impression that they’re taking in what you say. 16 It’s as if the words are going in, but the meaning just isn’t getting through to them. And this isn’t the only problem you may face. As you grow up, your personality is developing and you’re trying to become more independent, so naturally you have more opinions about all aspects of your life. You start wondering whether your parents actually know what they’re talking about. 17 It’s often hard for parents to know how to deal with this. That’s often because it’s the first time they’ve been responsible for a teenager. 18 . Obviously, it’s important to respect your parents and you should try to understand why they might have a different point view from yours. Their priority is to provide you with a structured environment, where they can guide and support you. It’s crucial for them to know what you’re doing and that you’re safe. However, it’s vital that they try and see your point of view. 19 After all, in only a few years you’ll probably leave home and have to look after yourself! Avoid talking about how your friends’ parents behave in similar situations. 20 Reminding yourself that many other teenagers are having the same problem can, however, offer the best way of dealing with such feelings. The more you can discuss things with your parents in a mature way, the happier you will feel. Above all, stay positive and remember that it won’t be long before you’ll be able to make your own decisions. A. These doubts can lead to arguments. B. And do not take yourself too seriously. C. They’re learning to handle this situation. A. In fact, they’re often not actually doing so at all. B. But that doesn’t mean they’re right on this occasion. C. They also need to give you the freedom to make your own decisions. D. It won’t help communication but only increases your disappointment and anxiety. 第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) One day when I was 15 years old, I had some friends over to hang out. Chowderhead is a thick soup. My father says that our early ancestors may have invented chowder. For me, the last name teasing began as soon as I started school. So when my family moved to South Carolina, I decided that it was my chance for a fresh start. I asked my dad if I could change my name. “But the name ‘ Chowderhead’ had a long and rich history,” Dad started. “ I know. I know.” “Why do you want to change it?” he asked. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but I didn’t want to go through another school year as a “chowderhead(傻瓜)” either. “ I get teased all the time.” “I know it’s not always easy to be a chowderhead,” Dad said. “But you shouldn’t change who you are. Let people get to know you first and your name later.” “How can people get to know me before they know my name?”I asked. He said, “Ask good questions.” I looked at him blankly. He went on, “When you meet people, ask them good questions. Once people start talking about themselves they won’t judge you. They’re just happy that someone is interested in what they are going to say.” Two days later I headed to my school for the first day of class. As soon as I got to my classroom, a girl name Claire introduced herself. She was very nice and we soon became friends. By lunchtime, I’d talked to lots of people and was getting the hang of finding the right question. But there were two kids, twin brothers, who didn’t seem to talk to anyone but each other. When they looked at me, I felt as if they already knew that I was a chowderhead. Still, my dad’s advice had worked out well, so I decided to give it one more try. Chinese host family are generally welcoming so it will not be a problem for you to fit in. But it will leave a better impression if you help them with some housework in your spare time. As for the table manners, respecting the seniors and waiting for them to eat first may be the first to remember. Besides, it a good idea to have a small talk at the table to avoid silence. In fact, the best policy is “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Hoping they will be of some help to you. 读后续写 Paragraph 1: I asked Claire if we should sit with the twins. She looked a little surprised, but agreed and followed me. “Do you mind if we sit with you?” I asked. The twins looked at us. I sat down. “What is it like being a twin?” I asked. The twins looked surprised. Then they both started talking at the same time. “No one has ever asked us that!” one said. “Most of the time it’s good,” the other said. In no time at all, we were laughing and talking. Then one of the brothers said, “I’m Nicholas, and this is my brother Nathaniel. What’s your name?” Paragraph 2: I took a deep breath, and said, “I’m Chelsea Chowderhead.” “Chowder? Like the soup?” Nathaniel asked. “ Yes,” I replied, looking down, “ like a thick soup.” “ Hey, cool. Do you and Claire want to come over after school and play basketball with us?” Nathanial asked. “ I’d love to, “ I said. “ Me too!” Claire agreed. And that is how I learned to ask good questions and became friends with Nichaolas and Nathaniel.查看更多
