His family moved to Belton, Missouri when he was a small child. In his teens, though still having ‎ to get up at 4 a.m. every day to milk his parents' cows, he managed to obtain an education at the State Teacher's College in Warrensburg. His first job after college was selling correspondence courses. He moved on to selling bacon, soap, and lard(猪油)for Armour & Company.‎ After saving $500, Dale Carnegie quit sales in 1911 in order to achieve a lifelong dream of becoming a lecturer. He ended up instead attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, but found little success as an actor. Later he got the idea to teach public speaking. In his first session, he suggested that students speak about "something that made them angry", and discovered the technique that made speakers unafraid to address a public audience. From its beginning, the Dale Carnegie Course developed. Carnegie had made use of the average American's desire to have more self-confidence.‎ Perhaps one of Carnegie's most successful marketing moves was to change the spelling of his last name from "Carnagey" to Carnegie, at a time when Andrew Carnegie was a widely recognized name.‎ Carnegie's works include Lincoln the Unknown (1932), Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business (1937), and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living (1948). His greatest achievement, however, was when Simon &. Schuster published How to Win Friends and Influence People. The book was a bestseller from 1936. A common day of an average university student in American starts off like this: an alarm clock wakes you up, which is quickly followed by checking social media such as Twitter and Facebook. Once in classes, you are again attracted by your buzzing phone and access to the Internet rather than pay attention to the lecturing professor. Then you have lunch with some friends, only to look up from your screen to realize that no one has said a word in five minutes and instead all are looking at their phones. Once the day ends, you can't help checking all forms of social media again before finally being able to shut your eyes only to repeat this vicious cycle the next day.‎ Cyberbullying(网络霸凌),a concept unknown before , is now in fashion . Many of the millennials are using the Internet to make jokes about others to extremes. The Internet gives cowards bravery. People feel like their actions and words have no bad results because they cannot see the pain they cause others.‎ Millennials also tend to think that whatever information shows up on their screens must be taken as truth, whether the source is reliable(可靠的) or not.‎ Social media is not all bad, however. People are still able to use social media to connect with friends and family who live a great distance away. With a few clicks, someone could make another person smile, or give words of hope and encouragement to a friend in need, or even help repair a broken relationship. Cyberspace is a vortex( 流涡) that is easy to get caught up in , but we must find a balance to keep both feet in reality while travelling across the online world .‎ ‎28. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 infer?‎ A. You can't break away from your phone. B. You decide to get rid of this bad behavior.‎ C. You return to going cyberbullying the following day. D. You are caught in the busy life.‎ ‎29. What can be learned about the millennials?‎ A. They often mistake facts for personal opinions. B. They prefer to communicate face to ‎ face.‎ C. They are often made fun of in the cyberspace. D. They don't often make their own judgments.‎ ‎30. Which way of using social media is accepted by the author?‎ A. Being glued to the phones all the time. B. Promoting relationships.‎ C. Losing themselves in the cyberspace. D. Fighting against others.‎ ‎31. What's the author's purpose of writing the text?‎ A. To state the ill effects of social media. B. To prove the benefits of cyberspace.‎ C. To suggest using the social media wisely. D. To introduce the functions of phones.‎ D Is It Worth Buying Organic Food? Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice more for goods with organic labels (商标). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious, and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.‎ The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. "We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier," says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. "So consumers shouldn't assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer."‎ For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including vitamins, minerals and fats.‎ While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats,‎ ‎ such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.‎ Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that "whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste." Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.‎ ‎32. It is the same with music, whether you listen to it on the radio, on your drive to work or sit before an orchestra. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture. 36 ‎ Both language and music have a writing system. In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. In the same way, we use notes to keep a record of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the screen and find meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. 37 By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. I can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite exciting.‎ ‎38 You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation. 39 Even if you don’t like Britpop melodies, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.‎ Both share emotion. How do you know that I am angry? Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. 40 Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share in that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you were feeling down. I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.‎ A. Both vary with culture.‎ B. Here are some of their similarities.‎ C. They have some distinguishing characteristics.‎ D. So just as you read English, you can read music.‎ E. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy.‎ F. This also means that there is something for everyone!‎ G. This also means everyone can learn language and music well!‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分 45) ‎ 第一节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分) ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ On a trip to California, my family stopped for lunch.
