When I learned that this tradition came from India,I sought parental approval. To my surprise my mother asked me to talk to her after I learned the underlying significance of this age-old custom. Surprised and a little disappointed,I nevertheless agreed. I once believed that traditions were handed down through generations and to question them was regarded as disrespect to something holy. This particular custom has existed in India for centuries:girls get their noses pierced(穿透)primarily as they come of age or during their wedding ceremony.I took up the challenge to reach a decision. I started looking for authentic sources that could help me understand the background of nose piercing. That summer while visiting India,I began my quest. My friend's great-grandmother enlightened me about the shocking facts underlying this tradition. She told me of a farmer who had acquired a group of cattle. He realized he could pierce their noses, slipping giant hoops(箍)through them so he could control and guide them. This practice was soon adopted by his village elders as part of the wedding ceremony:the nose piercing would symbolize a man’s control over his wife. This tradition showed that a woman needed to be “guided and protected” by a man! The most common nose rings are golden ones with complex designs to hide the cruel reality of contro1. I could not honestly keep up a tradition that demeans(贬低)a woman’s status in society, branding her as the property of a man. Learning how the custom arose completely changed my thinking about nose rings as fashion statements. Then I made my decision:I did not want my nose pierced. After all,all I quest for is self-transformation and personal liberation. 24.Why didn’t the author’s mother agree with her idea immediately? A.Her mother was born an Indian girl. B.Her mother didn’t have a nose ring! C.Her mother thought it natural to wear a nose ring. D.Her mother may know something about nose piercing. 25.What does a nose ring originally mean in India? A.A man’s occupation of a woman. B.A sad story of an Indian woman. C.A large beautiful hoop made of gold. D.A group of cattle. 26.From the passage we can learn that________. A.the author is afraid of taking up a challenge B.Indian girls get their noses pierced on special days C.the author thought it normal to question a tradition D.nose tings are always regarded as a fashion 27.Finally the author didn’t want her nose pierced because____. A.her mother refused her to do that B.she would be looked down upon C.she feared to be controlled by a man D.she understood the truth of the custom C Domestic (驯养的) horses now pull ploughs, race in the Kentucky Derby, and carry police. But early horses weren’t tame (驯服的) enough to perform these kinds of tasks. Scientists think the first interactions humans had with horses were far different from those today. Thousands of years ago, people killed the wild horses that lived around them for food. Over time, people began to catch the animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestication. As people began to tame(驯养) and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirable characteristics. For example, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a gentle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People who used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to keep stronger animals. Characteristics like strength are partly controlled by the animals’ genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of horses would show more of these chosen characteristics. Modern day horse breeds (繁殖)come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This variety didn’t exist in the horse population before domestication. The Shetland horse is one of the smallest breeds—typically reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, the animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井) with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came on the scene around 1700. People bred these heavy, tall horses to pull large vehicles used for carrying heavy loads. The domestication of horses has had great effects on societies. For example, horses were important tools in the advancement of modern agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm more efficiently. Before they were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on foot. Riding horses allowed people to travel far greater distance in much less time. That encouraged populations living in different areas to interact with one another. The new form of rapid transportation helped cultures spread around the world. 28. Before domestication horses were ______. A. caught for sports B. hunted for food C. made to pull ploughs D. used to carry people 29. The author uses the Shetland horse as an example to show ______. A. it is smaller than the Clydesdale horse B. horses used to have gentle personalities C. some horses have better shapes than others D. horses were of less variety before domestication 30. Horses contributed to the spread of culture by ______. A. carrying heavy loads B. changing farming methods C. serving as a means of transport D. advancing agriculture in different areas 31. The passage is mainly about _______. A. why humans domesticated horses B. how humans and horses needed each other C. why horses came in different shapes and sizes D. how human societies and horses influenced each other D As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how. In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it. In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location(位置)better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive memory(交互记忆)". According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing. 32.The passage begins with two questions to ______. A. introduce the main topic B. show the author's attitude C. describe how to use the Interne. D. explain how to store information 33.What can we learn about the first experiment? A. Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer. B. The two groups remembered the information equally well. C. The first group did not try to remember the information. D. The second group did not understand the information. 34. In transactive memory, people ______. A. keep the information in mind B. change the quantity of information C. organize information like a computer D. remember how to find the information 35.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research? A. We are using memory differently. B. We are becoming more intelligent. C. We have poorer memories than before. D. We need a better way to access information. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Weight loss is a hard topic. Lots of people aren’t satisfied with their present weight, but most people aren’t sure how to change it. You may want to look like the models or actors in magazines or on TV, but those goals might not be healthy or realistic(现实的) for you . 36 So what should you do about your weight control? 37 The best way to find out if you are at a healthy weight or if you need to lose or gain weight is to talk to a doctor or dietitian(营养学家). 38 If it turns out that you can benefit from weight loss then you can follow a few of the simple suggestions listed below to get started. 39 People who lose weight quickly by crash dieting or other extreme measures usually gain back all of the pounds they lost, because they haven’t permanently(永久地) changed their habits.
