He’d either wrap all his fingers around it or clasp(抓住)it uncomfortably between his middle and fourth finger. Through practice he managed to get it right when he was about eight. Now at 23, not only can he use a pencil competently, he’s using it to change the world, one stroke at a time. Peter—who goes by the name Peter Draw—felt the desire to draw with a purpose after meeting Daniel, a teenager with cerebral palsy(脑瘫), in November 2006. When Daniel first joined Peter’s drawing class at the Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore, Peter doubted if Daniel could even complete a drawing. But stroke by stroke the then 17-year-old did. “His passion for drawing really touched me. I felt I should do more with my drawing and help children at the same time,” says Peter, who has since taken on some mega projects to raise awareness for his cause. Last October, he earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for drawing the world’s largest caricature(人物漫画). His 360-square-metre drawing of Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan is twice the size of the previous record. Peter completed it in just three-and-a-half hours while the previous record-holder took three days. And in December, he took on the challenge of drawing caricatures for 24 hours non-stop in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that builds homes for the less fortunate. Peter completed 952 sketches(素描)during the time. The event raised $ 6, 000 through donations and his accomplishment earned him a mention in the Singapore Book of Records. 24.When Peter was a kid, ________. C.He drew 952 sketches in 24 hours to raise a lot of money. D.He raised a lot of money for Daniel to treat his disease. C Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt. In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546.Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry Ⅳ, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out. Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World WarⅡ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far? Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground. 28. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because ______. A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment B. they believed disease could be spread in public baths C. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease 29. Which of the following best describes Henry Ⅳ's attitude to bathing? A. Uninterested. B. Curious. C. Approving. D. Afraid. 30. How does the passage mainly develop? A. By following the order of time. B. By making comparisons. C. By providing examples. D. By following the order of importance. 31. What is the author's purpose in writing the passage? A. To stress the role of dirt. B. To introduce the history of dirt. C. To present the change of views on dirt. D. To call attention to the danger of dirt. D The discussion on renewable energy has been going on for at least a decade and people have relied on fossil fuels almost entirely for more than a century. However, the situation when fossil fuels were the most efficient and the cheapest source of energy has been left far in the past. Many countries such as Germany and Sweden have already made significant efforts to fix this situation, employing numerous power plants working on the renewable resources of energy. The most effective among these resources is geothermal(地热的)energy. Geothermal energy does not depend on the world’s economic and political situation as strongly as fossil fuels do. Besides, extracting(提炼)fossil fuels adds to the price of energy produced from them. Therefore, geothermal energy is much cheaper than traditional ones, saving up to 80% of the costs over fossil fuels. Being a renewable resource, geothermal energy produces less waste and pollution than traditional energy sources. In geothermal systems, carbon dioxide makes up about 10% of air produced. Overall, in order to produce the electricity that can be used for one hour, the geothermal systems produce 0.1 pound of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases. For a comparison, a power plant producing from gas produces up to 2 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and those power plants that work on coal(煤)produce an astonishing 3.6 pounds of greenhouse gases. Low costs is another reason why using geothermal power plants should be the first choice for many countries. Geothermal heat systems require 25% to 50% less energy for work compared with the traditional systems for heating or cooling. Besides, geothermal equipment is less big: due to the very nature of geothermal energy, geothermal power plants have only a few moving parts, all of which can be easily sheltered inside a relatively small building. What’s more, the life span of geothermal equipment is rather long. All these make geothermal power stations easy to build and keep. 32. Fossil fuels are more expensive than geothermal energy partly because ______. A. the production of fossil fuels costs a lot B. fossil fuels are nearly used up C. it is free to use geothermal energy D. geothermal energy doesn’t depend on political situation 33. According to Paragraph 3, what can be concluded from the comparison? A. Coal is much more efficient than gas. B. Gas and coal are often used to produce electricity. C. Geothermal energy is environmentally friendly. D. The geothermal systems don’t produce harmful gases. 34. Geothermal equipment is usually not as big as that of traditional energy because of ______. A. the life span of geothermal equipment B. the nature of geothermal energy C. the small buildings D. geothermal power plants 35. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Geothermal energy has many advantages. B. Geothermal energy is well accepted. C. Fossil fuels are being run out of. D. Many countries have benefited from geothermal energy. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 As a senior year student, you may have so many pressures coming from so many directions that you can’t figure out what to do first. 36 When you have many things to do and a lot of demands on your time, you can lose sight of what’s important. One of the best ways to see the big picture—what you want out of life—is to lay out your goals. Pressure Points and How to Deal with Them Confused or overwhelmed—talk to someone you trust. 37 They may help you find solutions to your problems and worries. Being too hard on yourself—ease up, take a break and do something you enjoy. Daydream, read a book, go out with friends—anything that helps you relax. Problems, problems, problems—recognize your limits. It’s too stressful to try to deal with all your problems at once. 38 Goal-Setting Tips It’s important to remember that goals belong to you—not to your parents, your teachers, or your friends. After you’ve set your goals, identify the skills you have to achieve those goals. 39 Try the library, your guidance adviser and teachers, and other people who could help you. Goals exist to serve you. If your goal is something you no longer want, change it. Identify the barriers to getting your goals. 40 Don’t get depressed by a big, long-term goal—see what steps you can take to achieve it and set those steps down as short-term, “do-able” goals. A. Discuss your concerns with a friend, parent or teacher. B. If you’re not sure what skills you’ll need, do some research. C. Balancing goals in life. D. Choose what’s most urgent and set aside the rest until later. A. Too much to do. B. Consider ways to overcome them. C.
