A pretty blond white American like Taylor Swift? Or a handsome black American like President Barack Obama or basketball star Kobe Bryant? In fact, there was a time when the average American looked like none of these people. Back in the year 1500, the average American was a brown-skinned hunter-gatherer who probably rode a horse and wore clothing made from animal skins. Today, these people-who usually identify themselves based on their individual tribes such as Iriquois, Apache and Navajo-are broadly referred to as “Native Americans”, “American Indians” or simply “Indians”. There’s a chance that you’ve never even heard of American Indians. That’s because there aren’t very many left. When the European settlement of North America began, there were fierce conflicts between the settlers from overseas and these native peoples. After the British government and military were expelled (赶走) in the Revolutionary War, conflicts with natives continued as the states were created that would later make up the US. In these conflicts, millions of natives were killed. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act. This act required all Indians to migrate to the west of the Mississippi River to allow for the expansion of the US. American Indians were treated as a military “enemy” until 1924, when the few Indians still alive at that point were granted US citizenship. That was the first time that the US government formally recognized Indians as human beings. While the story of the American Indians has been a sad one, these peoples’ legacies (遗产) are still felt every day in the US. Many US geographical names come from Indian languages, such as Ohio, Topeka, Kansas, and the Potomac River. At the same time, there are numerous successful academics and other important US leaders who are descended from Indians. And nowadays, more and more history classes in US public schools are educating students about how Indians suffered during the settlement of the US. I was lucky enough to take such a history class in high school. I sincerely believe that if we want a better future, we must look carefully and honestly at the past. 64. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article? A. Few American Indians have achieved success due to their poor living conditions. B. Today few Americans know about how Indians suffered during the settlement of the US. C. In the past, most of the American Indians lived in the states of Ohio and Kansas. D. Since the year 1924, American Indians have been recognized as US citizens. 65. What does the article mainly talk about? A. The sad story of American Indians. B. How the American Indians succeeded in the US. C. What a typical American is like. D. American Indians’ economic impact on the US. 66. How does the passage mainly develop? A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons. C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of importance. C The evolution(演化) of the first animals may have oxygenated(供氧)Earth's oceans. New research led by the University of Exeter challenges the long held belief that oxygenation of the atmosphere and oceans was a precondition for the evolution of complex(复杂的) life forms. The study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, builds on the recent work of scientists in Denmark who found that sponges(海绵动物)一the first animals to evolve一require only small amounts of oxygen. Professor Tim Lenton of the University of Exeter, who led the new study, said: "We argue that the evolution of the first animals could have played a key role in the widespread oxygenation of the deep oceans. This in turn may have facilitated the evolution of more complex, mobile animals." Critical(关键的) to determining oxygen levels in the deep ocean is the balance of oxygen supply and demand. Demand for oxygen is created by the sinking of dead organic material into the deep ocean. The new study argues that the first animals reduced this supply of organic matter一both directly and indirectly. Sponges feed by pumping water through their bodies, "digesting" the tiny particles of organic matter, and thus helping oxygenate the shelf seas that they live in. By oxygenating more of the bottom waters, the first animals actually increased the removal of the essential nutrient phosphorus(磷)in the ocean. This in turn reduced the productivity of the whole ocean ecosystem, lowering oxygen demand and thus oxygenating the deep ocean. A more oxygen-rich ocean created ideal conditions for more complex mobile animals to evolve, because they have a higher requirement for oxygen. These included the first predatory(肉食的)animals with guts(内脏)that started to eat one another, marking the beginning of the type of food webs we are familiar with today. Professor Simon Poulton of the University of Leeds, who is a co-author of the study, added: "This study provides a possible mechanism for ocean oxygenation without the requirement for a rise in atmospheric oxygen. It therefore questions whether the long-standing belief that there was a major rise in atmospheric oxygen at this time is correct. We simply don't know the answer to this at present, which is ultimately key to understanding how our planet evolved to its current habitable state. Geochemists need to come up with new ways to explain oxygen levels on the early Earth." 67. The underlined word "facilitated" in Para. 3 is closest in meaning to____________. A. prevented B. promoted C. interrupted D. witnessed 68. From paragraphs 4 to 6, we can infer that ___________________________. A. phosphorus can keep the productivity of the ocean ecosystem B. complex animals consume the same amount of oxygen as sponges C. the sinking of dead organic material into the deep ocean produces oxygen D. the existence of the first animals marks the beginning of modern food webs 69. From the last paragraph, we can learn Pro. Simon Poulton believes that ______________. A. their study gives a new explanation for the high oxygen content in the air B. oxygen increased greatly in the air as the first animals oxygenated the oceans C. their study answers the question of how the earth evolved to the present state D. ocean oxygenation does not necessarily require a rise in atmospheric oxygen 70. The main purpose of the passage is to__. A. present the view that the first animals played an active role in oxygenating oceans B. introduce two opposite opinions on how the first animals oxygenated oceans C. analyze how atmospheric oxygen stepped up the evolution of oceanic animals D. explain how oceanic oxygen determines the amount of atmospheric oxygen D He leant down to the pickpocket. The heaving and gasping (喘气) had stopped, but he was still making a show of his breathlessness. “That’s better,” Mallon said. “Can you stand up? Try to stand up. Here,” he said, and gripped the pickpocket’s arm and forced him upright until he saw his face for the first time. As the pickpocket labored for breath, he gazed up at Mallon with his dark eyes. “How could you?” they asked. Mallon might have said, “Because you tried to steal from me.” But he was still conscious of the flush of joy he’d felt when his blow struck home — when he knew he’d hurt the man. Where that joy came from he couldn’t say, but he knew that its roots were deeper than some clumsy failed theft. Fat drops of rain began to patter on the awning (雨篷). “How are you?” Mallon said. “Can you walk?” The pickpocket turned away and leant against the store window with both hands, and his head sank lower as his shoulders rose and fell. A gray-haired woman inside the store rapped on the glass and made a shooing motion. When the pickpocket ignored her, she rapped harder and kept rapping. “I have to go,” Mallon said. “I’m sorry.” He looked up at the sky. “I’m sorry,” he said again, and stepped into the rain and walked quickly up the street. One of the Bangladeshi umbrella sellers was working the corner, and Mallon had just paid seven euros when he heard a woman shouting. He didn’t want to look back but did. It was the woman from the shop, pushing and batting the pickpocket away from the window while he bent down and covered his head like a boxer trying to get through the last seconds of a round. Mallon slipped his wallet back into his jacket pocket and took the umbrella that the Bangladeshi had opened for him. The pickpocket was out on the sidewalk now, in the rain. The woman stood just under the awning with her arms crossed over her chest. “Excuse me, madam,” Mallon said, coming up to them. “This man isn’t well. He needs to rest a moment.” “I know these people,” she said. “Our Romans don’t want them here.” The rain fell in sheets, ran down the pickpocket’s shiny scalp and face, down his leather jacket. “Here,” Mallon said, and offered him the umbrella, but he only looked at Mallon with his hurt dark eyes and then lowered his head again. Mallon bumped him in the shoulder with the handle of the umbrella. “Go on — take it!” he said. And finally, with a beaten, unwilling look, the pickpocket did. And that was when he saw a taxi round the corner with a light glowing on its roof. Mallon ran out waving his arm and the cab turned sharply to the pavement, sending a lot of water over his shoes. He opened the door but couldn’t help looking back. The pickpocket had lowered the umbrella to the ground upside down and was leaning on the shaft, head low, neck bared to the sky. “Wait,” Mallon said to the driver. He went back and grabbed the pickpocket’s sleeve and pulled him to the cab. “Get in,” Mallon said, and took the umbrella and pushed him into the back seat. He leaned inside. “O.K., where do you live?” “No Gypsies!” the driver said. He was twisted around, glaring at the pickpocket. “Gypsy? Look, he’s not well. I’ll pay,” Mallon added. The driver shook his head. “No Gypsies. Get him out,” Mallon looked at the driver’s nameplate: Michele Kadare. “It’s the law,” he said, “If you don’t take us, Signor Kadare, I’ll report you and you’ll lose your license. Believe me — I am quite serious.” The driver fastened those pale eyes on Mallon and turned and put his hands on the steering wheel. He raised his eyes to the rearview mirror and he and Mallon exchanged stares. “O.K., Mr. American,” he said. “You pay.” 71. What kind of person is Mallon according to the passage? A. stubborn and cruel B. kind and considerate C. cruel but honest D. generous but stubborn 72. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 indicate? A. Mallon shouldn’t have saved the pickpocket. B. The pickpocket was a little suspicious (怀疑)of Mallon’s intention C. The pickpocket blamed Mallon for his failure to steal. D. Mallon must have beaten the pickpocket before helping him. 73. Where should the sentence “He hesitated, then turned back.” be placed? A. Between paragraphs 5 and 6. B. Between paragraphs 6 and 7. C. Between paragraphs 7 and 8. D. Between paragraphs 8 and 9. 74. From the attitudes of the woman and the driver towards the pickpocket, we can conclude that ________. A. the Gypsies had a bad reputation in Rome B. the pickpocket frequently stole around the woman’s store C. everyone was protected by the law in Rome except the Gypsies D. the pickpocket couldn’t purchase anything in the woman’s store 75. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. The taxi didn’t take the pickpocket to his house in the end. B. The pickpocket succeeded in stealing something from Mallon. C. The pickpocket had conflicting emotions about Mallon’s help D. The umbrella seller gave an umbrella to Mallon free of charge 第II卷 (满分10分) 请根据新概念II课文内容填空。(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) 1.
