B With at least a dozen wildfires going through western North Carolina in the fall of 2016, it would take more than one local fire department to fight the flames. In early November, the federal government sent over a team of firefighters from the Interagency Hotshot Crews. Most of the Hotshots stayed at Hinton Rural Life Center in Hayesville, North Carolina. The center reached out to the media and community groups, hoping to get four volunteers per day to help things run smoothly for their firefighting guests. They didn’t expect a response quite so unbelievable. Within two days, over 200 people —about a third of the town’s population—reached out to offer help, according to the center’s website. Meals and accommodation were already being taken care of, so they went above and beyond the basic things. Community members donated over 1,000 goods, including sports drinks, snacks, eye drops and so on. Even the kids in Hayesville participated, sending thank-you cards, pictures and signs to motivate the Hotshots. The team received over 2,000 thank-you notes. After the fires were put out and the firefighters were preparing to go home, the town threw a parade to thank them and wish them well. The firefighters were at a loss by the generosity from Hayesville. They put together their own thank-you in a YouTube video. “You guys don’t know how much you mean, all the support you guys give us, ’’ says Ron, a firefighter from Oregon, in the video. “Out of four years when I’ve been fighting fire, this is about the most hospitable (好客的) state and county I’ve ever been in. C It’s common for children to grow up being toll to minimize daydreaming, and instead to focus on lessons and class work. Historically, daydreaming students who go off on their own thoughts, rather than focusing on the teachers, the blackboard, or their class work, are often encouraged to stop allowing their attention to wander and to bring themselves back into the present moment . They’re described as uninterested in school work and their future. Traditionally, daydreaming is seen as a practice that results in bad consequences. But recent studies are beginning to renounce those common beliefs by pointing out the potential benefits that daydreaming may provide. PsychCentral reports that Mary Smith, a psychological scientist and researcher, recently examined scientific writings and studies to gain a better understanding of the role of a reflective brain. These studies have shown that the brain has a network that is active when a person is daydreaming and that brain network can help memory and learning. Though paying attention in school is important, these results suggest that there should Me time for, too. Giving them the chance to reflect and daydream can help improve learning and development. Research also indicates that when students are permitted to daydream, they experience less anxiety and become more motivated. On the other hand, if students are warned against daydreaming, their knowledge of themselves and the world around them may suffer. As a result, educators are encouraged to promote a balance between outward and inward attention. A little bit of daydreaming to breakup the hard focus on school activities can be beneficial, and it may help students become better, active learners. As for students, the lesson here is not to be afraid of doing some daydreaming. Sure, you want to pay attention to the vital information conveyed to you during your classes, but don’t get discouraged if your mind wanders. A little bit of daydreaming is healthy. 8. What do people usually think of daydreaming students? A. They live in the future instead of in the moment. B. They pay too much attention to their own thoughts. C. They care about neither their studies nor their future. D. They go off on their own thoughts to avoid bad results. 9. What does the underlined word /enounce?, in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. Disapprove. B. Ignore. C. Promote. D. Inspire. 10.What can we infer from the text? A. The more we daydream, the better. B. Students should stay fully focused in class. C. Daydreaming reduces students’ motivation. D. We shouldn’t always say no to mind-wandering. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Causes of Daydreaming B. Benefits of Daydreaming C. Ways to Reduce Daydreaming D. Attitudes towards Daydreaming D In a time where power-banks and solar-power devices (设备) have become mainstream, a device that lets you charge gadgets (小物件) as you wish doesn’t sound very special. But while power-banks have to be charged the old way, and solar batteries need the sun to store energy, HandEnergy just needs a hand. The working principle behind HandEnergy is that of a two-axis rotor gyroscope(双轴转子陀螺仪). “You may be familiar with the wrist-training device called the Powerball, which is a powerful handheld gyroscope,” HandEnergy co-founder Alex Novik told Digital Trends. “We came up with the idea of putting a battery, metal coil(线圈)and magnets(磁铁)inside a similar device for making electricity. We spent a year developing it, and finally arrived at one we were happy with.” To use HandEnergy, users start by winding a starter ring. This sends a signal to drive the rotor, at which point they can start rotating (旋转) their wrists to keep the rotor spinning. The rotor inside HandEnergy spins at an average speed of 5,000 rotations per minute, conveying mechanical power to create electricity, and charging the built-in batteries. To charge a device ? just hook it up to HandEnergy using a USB data line. “We don’t necessarily think this will be something you use every day, because it takes around one hour to reach full charge, ” Novik says. “But it’s small enough to fit in your pocket, and you can use it anywhere.” Actually, HandEnergy charges smartphones at the same speed as a power outlet (插座). The battery only has a capacity of 1,000 mAh, so it won’t charge your phone completely at a time, but it can surely keep it running for a while longer when you really need it. Plus, it uses clean, unlimited energy. HandEnergy will be available for the masses soon, at a price of 99 Euros. One thing is for sure—it beats paying thousands of dollars on a solar-powered battery-charging coat. 12. Why is HandEnergy considered to be special? A. It’s able to charge a gadget anytime anywhere. B. It produces clean energy on an unlimited basis. C. It charges a gadget with users’ personal energy. D. It’s so small that you can carry it with yourself. 13. The Powerball is mentioned in Paragraph 2 just in order to show ________. A. how HandEnergy is produced B. what HandEnergy looks like C. what HandEnergy can do D. how HandEnergy works 14.What is the disadvantage of HandEnergy? A. is difficult to create it. B. It takes longer to charge it. C. It can be used only once. D. It produces too little energy. 15.What is the author’s attitude towards HandEnergy? A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Dyeing(染色) eggs is a fun way for families to celebrate spring and add color to the Easter holiday.
