Here are some good choices for you. UCL Senate House Hub UCL Senate House Hub opened in 2015 and provides 144 study spaces. What’s more, you can check how many spaces are available online before you head to the hub! Located on the third floor of the South Block of Senate House, the center has room for individual and group study in traditional library spaces, as well as casual arm chairs and bar-style desks. UCL Eastman Dental Library The newly refurbished UCL Eastman Dental Library is located halfway along Gray’s Inn Road and is open from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am–8:00 pm. The library has 72 study spaces, and many IT facilities are available. The library also has a study room for meetings and a computer room with an interactive whiteboard. UCL Language & Speech Science Library UCL Language & Speech Science Library (LaSS) has disabled access and has recently been refurbished to add extra study spaces. With only 49 spaces, LaSS is smaller than most other UCL Libraries and tends to fill up relatively quickly, so get there early to avoid disappointment. Senate House Library This one may be cheating as the Senate House Library is not technically a UCL library. However, all UCL students and staff can register for free membership online. With millions of books and journals, Senate House Library offers some places a little less used by UCL students but perfect for getting down to some hard work. 21. The four places are mainly introduced to someone who __________. A. loves reading B. is preparing for exams C. likes learning online D. prefers to study in libraries 22. What should students do online before they go to UCL Senate House Hub? A. Make an appointment in advance. B. Check the library’s opening hours. C. Check whether there are available seats. D. Check whether there are available armchairs. 23. How many libraries may offer Internet services? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. 24. Which library may be the smallest one among the four libraries ? A. UCL Senate House Hub. B.UCL Eastman Dental Library. C.Senate House Library. D.UCL Language & Speech Science Library B This is our country, America. The country where everyone is supposed to have a shot at financial success. The country of dreams and ambition. Yet, caused by the endless pursuit of individual profit, our country is a mess. And we owe it all to capitalism. We live in a society where people are forced to live without health coverage. A country where the poor can hardly feed themselves while the rich decide which one of their 10 homes to stay at for the night. All of these sad things arise out of capitalism. Sadly, our country values little more than money. It motivates our decisions and even influences entire political parties. We have gotten to the point in society where a human life comes secondary to our financial security. Any rational society would value life above all else and realize that health is a basic human right. Yet in our world, money comes first. I never once have claimed to be an economist and have no interest in debating the financial advantages of any economic system. Yet socialism surely looks better than what we have. If we lived in a socialist society, we would be a country without such an unfair wealth distribution. We would value friendship over business and we would treat one another as humans. Most importantly, however, is that money would stop controlling our lives and we could act how humans should act. Capitalism has created an “every man for himself” existence. Everything is a battle for limited resources and fuels. We have become so accustomed to the life value that we will do whatever we have to look out for ourselves. Yet is this really the kind of life we want? We have become so illusioned. We are tired of the misdirection. All economic systems have their issues, but I feel like ours is turning our country into something it shouldn’t be. The good of man falls secondary to money. In our world, it is all about dollars and cents, which, unfortunately for most, makes no sense. 25. In the author’s opinion, the root cause of the present situation in his country is ______. A. money B. people’s value C. social unfairness D. social system 26. According to the passage, which is NOT the characteristic of capitalism? A. individualism B. endless pursuit of wealth C. humanism D. great gap between the rich and the poor 27. How does the author feel about his country? A. concerned B. angry C. skeptical D. hopeless 28. Which of the following would the author agree with? A. Life should be placed at the top of our considerations. B. Socialism is perfect. C. Health is equally important as wealth. D. The pursuit for wealth should be restricted. C Do you like eating processed meat? If you do, think twice now if you want to eat such meat for the sake of your health. Why? It’s because eating processed meat can cause cancer, World Health Organization (WHO) experts said last Monday. Processed meat is meat that has been preserved by salting, smoking, drying or canning. Experts from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France studies 800 patients. The experts connected processed meat, such as hot dogs and bacon, with at least three kinds of cancer. A person who eats 50 grams of processed meat per day—about two pieces of bacon—increases his or her risk of bowel(肠) cancer by 18 percent. The IARC has included processed meat in its Group 1 list, for which there is “enough evidence” of connection with cancer. Tobacco is also on the Group 1 list. WHO experts also say red meat, including beef, lamb and pork, is “probably” carcinogenic (致癌的) to humans. Dr. Kurt Strait is with the IARC. He said in a statement that the risk of cancer increases with the amount of meat a person eats. Health experts in some countries advised against eating large amounts of red and processed meat. But those suggestions had been centered on the increased risk of heart disease and obesity. However, meat industry groups protest the result of the WHO study. They say that meat is part of a balanced diet. They also say the causes of cancer are broad, and include environment and lifestyle factors. The WHO report cites the Global Burden of Disease project, which shows that diets high in processed meat lead to 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide. 29. It can be inferred that the items on the Group 1 list of the IARC ________. A. are all processed foods B. aren’t often eaten by people C. can be the most dangerous to humans D. can greatly increase the risk of cancer 30. What can take the place of the underlined word “protest”? A. Learn from. B. Disagree with. C. Take interest in. D. Pay attention to. 31. What can be used as the best title of the passage? A. WHO: Processed Meat Can Cause Cancer B. The Importance of Having a Balanced Diet C. Eating Too Much Red Meat Is Bad for Humans D. Scientists Found the Causes of Some Kinds of Cancer D Who is your role model? Normally the answer to this question would be anyone around you who you find truly inspiring. It could also be someone like J.K. Rowling or Martin Luther King Jr. who has proven to be strong and intelligent person. However, in today’s world, stars are regarded as role models along with the heroes listed above, despite their intentions or actions. Teens attempt to imitate their actions for two major reasons. First, to be fashionable and accepted by popular culture, and second, because stars' actions are so well documented by the media that it seems to grab our attention and turns it to following stars’ lives. Much of the reports about stars is shocking and exhibits bad morals or lifestyles that aren’t right for teenagers. In addition, almost everything stars do is described beyond truth to make a shocking story by taking it to the next level. However, teens must take responsibility for their actions. We can’t always blame stars for influencing us. Only you have control over yourself and only you choose to do something. Our bodies and actions are in the hands of no one else. Now, who ever said stars are role models? Whether they choose to be or not, stars set examples as soon as they step into the spotlight. With reporters following and recording every move they make, it is impossible not to be watched and then be imitated. These people influence teens whether or not they want to. Why should someone who doesn’t want to be setting an example set one? So, should we look up to them or to people who are true and good role models? It’s our responsibility as teens to know right from wrong, and it’s time for us to take responsibility for our actions. In doing so, we will lean toward those inspiring people that want to be setting an example, and follow in their steps to be like them. 32. The teens like to imitates stars in order to _________. A. know more about stars’ stories B. be accepted by society C. be reported by the media D. become more fashionable 33. According to the author, the role the media play in setting examples to teenagers is__________. A. reasonable B. inspiring C. positive D. negative 34. The author writes the passage mainly to advise the teenagers to _______. A. keep a balance between study and entertainments B. be responsible for their own choices and behaviors C. follow fashionable stars’ steps to be more popular D. choose their role models through different reports 35. What does the underlined phrase “step into the spotlight” mean in the 4th paragraph? A. enter a place with a spotlight. B. get the attention of the media. C. lose interest in the media. D. react properly to the media. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We all know that being grateful and appreciative is very beneficial. ____36____ Gratitude belongs to the category of advanced life skills because it can completely transform your life.
