B British air is far cleaner than it was a few decades ago. Fewer people use coal-burning stoves; old industrial plants have been abandoned. But since 2009 levels of nitrogen oxides (氮氧化合物) and particulate matter, or some particles that are linked to lung cancer and asthma(哮喘), have fallen more slowly. The exact number of deaths caused by dirty air is unknown. But in 2010 a government advisory group estimated that removing man-made particulate matter from the atmosphere would increase life expectancy for those born in 2008 by an average of six months. Much of the slowdown is the result of diesel(柴油) cars, which were supported by governments because they use less fuel and thus produce less carbon dioxide than petrol cars. In 2001 only 14% of all cars ran on diesel; by 2013 it had increased to 35%. Greener “hybrid” and electric cars have increased nine times since 2006, but account for just 0.5% of the entire fleet. Second-hand cars are particularly poisonous, but even newer ones have not been as clean as hoped. Many cars that let out few pollutants in tests produced more when on the roads. Government hesitation has not helped. Part of the problem is that several departments are responsible for air pollution. This means nobody has taken a lead on it, complains Joan Walley, a Labour MP who chairs an environmental committee that has released a series of complaining reports. And few politicians are keen to criticize drivers. Talking to Britons about car ownership is “like talking to an American about hand guns”,jokes one air-pollution scientist. Some improvements have been made. In 2008 a “low-emission zone” was created in London, which targets large vans and coaches. A smaller “extremely-low-emission zone” has been proposed for 2020, which would charge all vehicles that are not of a certain standard £12.50 a day. European Commission fines for breaking limits may encourage cities to do more. But other countries are more active: 60 such zones exist in Germany, targeting private cars as well as vans. In December Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, announced that she wanted to ban diesel cars by 2020. Cities in Denmark and the Netherlands do more to encourage cycling. 24. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true? A. British air was once dirty due to coal burning and industrial gas emission. B. Particulate matter is closely related to the levels of nitrogen oxides. C. Data have proved the number of deaths caused by dirty air every year. D. Life expectancy would be lengthened for everyone if particular matter is removed. 25. Diesel cars are encouraged by governments because___________. A. they use cleaner fuels than petrol cars B. they produce less carbon dioxide than petrol cars C. they don’t produce carbon dioxide at all D. they account for the biggest market share 26. It can be inferred from the passage that_____________. A. hybrid and electric cars are more environment-friendly B. second-hand cars are often dirtier than new ones C. new cars are designed to produce no emission D. tests on car pollutants are often reliable 27. What do we know about the government’s attitude towards pollution control? A. It doesn’t have the intention to solve the problem. B. Every department wants to play a leading role C. Its passive attitude partly accounts for the slowdown. D. Politicians avoid blaming drivers for the problem. C Teens who are preparing to take cosmetic surgery often have unrealistic expectations. The growing numbers of beauty treatment television shows which make cosmetic surgery seem simple have encouraged adolescents to pursue surgery to improve their physical appearance. As a result, more teenagers are going under the knife to achieve a desired look. When teens feel the need to have cosmetic surgery, they believe that it is not a huge deal, but they may not be mature enough to make such a life changing decision. If teens feel inadequate before surgery, they will most likely feel disappointed afterwards. Not only is surgery complex and risky for mature adults, it is extremely dangerous for younger people, and some doctors are performing these procedures on kids as young as fourteen! The cost of procedures can add up to thousands of dollars. Insurance does not cover the costs of these procedures. Teenagers often pay for surgery themselves ----- a very costly purchase for a young person. Not only can surgery become addictive for insecure teens, the consequence can be disappointing. When surgery takes an unexpected wrong turn, permanent damage can occur. Any surgery on a young, undeveloped person has a risk of complication (并发症) such as infection, which can lead to death. Even if there are no complications, there is no guarantee that surgery will provide the perfect nose or a desired shape body. No matter how minor the procedure, it is not as effortless as it appears. Of course, there are cases where cosmetic surgery is appropriate. If a child has a serious injury or scarring from an accident, it can be beneficial. In all cases, parents must be involved in the process for the welfare of their child, and must guide them in the right direction. Fortunately, parents or legal guardians must sign documents allowing their child to have plastic surgery. Doctors also need to be a part of the decision. Most experienced and trust-worthy physicians turn down the opportunity to operate on a teenager unnecessarily. Cosmetic surgery is a life-changing experience. Hopefully, more teens will realize that there is more to a person than physical beauty, and learn to accept themselves for who they are. 28. Teenagers are encouraged to have cosmetic surgery by _________. A. some surgeons B. TV show hosts C. their teen friends D. lots of TV programs 29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Cosmetic surgery being too costly for teens. B. The hidden danger in having cosmetic surgery. C. The development of techniques of cosmetic surgery. D. Cosmetic surgery making teens prettier without effort. 30. The author may think a teenager can consider having cosmetic surgery if he/she _______. A. has an ugly scar B. is not very beautiful C. is supported by their parents D. has got a doctor’ s permission 31.What is the author’s general attitude towards teens having cosmetic surgery? A. Disapproving. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Curious. D Never before has so much money been made by a single firm in such a short period of time. On January 27th Tim Cook, the boss of Apple, announced that it had made $18 billion in its latest financial quarter. Apple's telephone-number-sized profit came largely from sales of its hugely popular iPhone, which accounted for over two-thirds of its $74.6 billion income. Chief executive officers (CEO) rarely admit to being shocked by their companies' performance, but Mr Cook said it was “hard to comprehend” the extent of the interest in Apple's products. He noted that, on average, 34,000 iPhones were bought every hour of every day during the latest quarter, which was more than market-watchers had expected. Apple is the world's largest company by market capitalization(总值) as well as its most profitable. Strikingly, it has risen to greatness using a rather old-fashioned business model: selling highly desirable objects, which hit almost 40% in the latest quarter. The tech industry has given birth to numerous software-based firms, such as Google and Facebook, which don't have to worry about shifting goods around, yet they make much less than Apple. Amazon company handles lots of physical goods, but loses money. Another thing that sets Apple apart from the tech pack is its success in conquering China. While other competitors have been frustrated there, Apple has just become the largest force in China's smartphone market measured by units shipped, according to Canalys, a market-research firm. Any failure in China could hurt Apple. The company's overall dependence on the iPhone is another risk. But these are early days for the iPhone X, Apple's latest device, which are wildly popular with customers. Some iFans also point out that Apple's share of the smartphone market is small compared with devices using Google's Android operating system. So it has plenty of room to grow. 32. A large part of Apple’s profits comes from_________. A. the sales of its smartwatch C. the sales of its service B. the sales of its software D. the sales of its iphone 33. The author quotes Mr. Cook’s words in Para.1 in order to___________. A. show how popular iphone is C. show how smart chief executives are B. show how much money Apple makes D. show how the company is run 34. It is implied in the passage that___________. A. Apple’s smartwatch will reduce its dependence on the iphone B. shifting goods around makes Amazon’s profits less C. the future of software-based firms is quite uncertain D.The market share of Apple’s smartphone is small compared with Android devices. 35. What makes Apple stand out from other tech firms? A. The total sales of iphones all over the world. B. Its successful occupation of market share in China. C. No shifting of goods around. D. Its constant developing of new products. 第二节、七选五(共5小题, 每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Researchers have shown that your talent for happiness is, to a large degree, determined by your genes(基因). 36 We can do this by overcoming negative emotions and developing positive emotions. Strategy(策略)1: 37 The first step is to make a choice to be happy. Strategy 2: Develop gratitude. In Authentic Happiness, psychologist Martin Seligman encourages readers to perform adaily “gratitude exercise”. 38 Strategy 3: Remember, money can’t buy happiness. Strategy 4: Take part in meaningful activities. “People are seldom happier,” says Jackson, “than when they’re doing meaningful activities”.Yet, he has found that the most common leisure(休闲)activity — watching TV — produces some of the lowest levels of happiness. 40 Active leisure that helps a person grow does not come easily, he writes in Finding Flow. A. Achieve happiness. B. Choose to be happy. C. Happiness is decided by a good many aspects. D. To get more out of life, we need to put more into it. E.
