We decided to stop at a local gas station to get coffee and something to snack on since it was a good hour and a half before we got home. When we were done, we got back into our car and before I started it, we noticed a man standing outside in front of the building. He was a homeless man with worn clothes and it looked like he had gone in and gotten himself some coffee or something warm to drink since it was cold this time of the year. He must have not had enough money to get something to eat. Then a dog walked up to the front of the building. I could tell she was a “she”, because you could tell that she had baby dogs. She was terribly in need of something to eat and I felt so bad for her. I knew if she didn’t eat soon, she and her baby dogs would not make it. I and my wife sat there and looked at her. We noticed that people walked by and didn’t even pet her, like most people do when they walk by an animal in front of a store. We still did not do anything. But the homeless man, who I thought did not buy himself anything to eat, went back into the store. And what he did brought tears to me and my wife. He had gone into the store and with what money he may have had, bought a can of dog food and fed that dog. This story plays a great part in our lives. You see, that was Mother’s Day weekend. And a lot of people forget that some animals are parents too. It took a homeless man, to show me what I should have done. He made me a better man that day. 4. The homeless man only had something to drink because ________. A. he felt cold that day B. he was thirsty only C. the store only provided drinks D. he didn’t have enough money for food 5. Seeing what the poor man did for the dog, the author and his wife ________. A. were puzzled B. were indifferent C. were greatly moved D. regretted they hadn’t done anything 6. If the homeless man hadn’t given the dog food to eat,she and her babies would ________. A. not have to die B. not survive C. have to attack people D. lose their homes 7. Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage? A. Animals Are Parents Too. B. A Lucky Mother Dog. C. Mother’s Day Weekend. D. A kind Homeless Man. C The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth , is of great importance to African ecosystem (生态系统).Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and- savanna(大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat(栖息地). It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters. Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well. What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem. 8. What is the passage mainly about? A. Disappearance of African elephants. B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants. C. The effect of African elephants’ search for food. D. The eating habit of African elephants. 9. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean? A. Fixing the time. B. Worsening the state. C. Improving the quality. D. Deciding the conditions. 10. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage? A. They result from the destruction of rain forests. B. They provide food mainly for African elephants. C. They are home to many endangered animals. D. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds. 11. The passage is developed mainly by . A. showing the effect and then explaining the causes B. pointing out similarities and differences C. describing the changes in space order D. giving examples D Now, we know that if we do not get enough vitamins, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. As a result, vitamin supplements(补品),though expensive, are popular with people who worry that they are not getting enough vitamins from the foods they eat. But contrary to what many people think, medical experts have found little evidence that most supplements do anything to improve health or protect against disease. In fact, medical experts warn that taking too many of some vitamins can be harmful. For example, too much vitamin E can cause bleeding. People should discuss what vitamins they take with their doctors, as some vitamins can produce harmful side effects when mixed with medicines. Experts, however, do say that sometimes vitamins can help prevent disease. People who know they lack a particular vitamin should take vitamin supplements. Some older adults, for example, may not have enough vitamin B-twelve. This is because, as people get older, their body loses its ability to take it from foods. Also, people who spend much time inside may need some extra vitamin D as the skin makes this vitamin from sunlight. Different vitamins are found in different foods. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil. It is also in the yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A. Vitamin B-twelve is found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, like fruits. Vitamin K can be found in pork products. In fact, for most people, a balanced diet can ensure enough of the vitamins our bodies need. So, it is important for us to eat a mixture of foods every day to ensure that we get enough vitamins our bodies need. 12.Vitamin supplements are popular with people because ________. A. people fear that a lack of vitamins will lead to disease B. they contain more vitamins than the foods people eat C. food does not provide enough vitamins people need D. people mistakenly think that they are good for their health 13. From the passage, we can learn that medical experts advise people _________. A.never to take any vitamin supplements B.to depend only on food for their vitamins C.not to take any vitamins together with medicines D.to consult doctors before taking vitamin supplements 14. For people who lack Vitamin B-twelve, they can eat more from _______. A. sweet potatoes B. pork products C. green leafy vegetables D. eggs 15. What would be the main idea of the passage? A. Vitamins are important to our health. B. Vitamin supplements do harm to our health. C. Getting enough vitamins through a balanced diet. D. Lacking vitamins can cause many diseases. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 注意:请把答案用2B其拿笔涂在答题卡上。写在本试卷上无效。 The moment you enter senior high school, examination comes one after another.
