Environmentalists were also brought in.‎ ‎“We don’t know when the eggs might hatch,” said Monahan. What is known is that the young killdeer will likely leave the nest soon after they are hatched, leading many to hope that the eggs hatch in the next day or so.‎ The festival is now seeking permission from Environment Canada to relocate the nest some ‎ 50 meters away or take it to a wildlife center.‎ Moving the nest would also ensure the bird and its young would be protected during the festival’s 11-day run, said Monahan. It’s highly likely that the festival’s thousands of attendees would cause huge problems for the bird and its eggs.‎ Monahan was confident that the festival would go on as planned, however.‎ ‎“Most of the people we’re working with are looking for a positive solution,” Monahan said. “There is no one saying that the festival can’t go on.”‎ As news of the dilemma spread, it left residents divided. Some supported the bird, saying that moving the nest might result in the eggs being abandoned.‎ Others expressed annoyance that protecting the eggs of the small bird, which is widespread across North America, was risking an annual festival that contributes millions of dollars to the local economy.‎ The killdeer’s tendency to build its nest in open fields or flat areas has caused issues in other areas of the US: earlier this year, construction on a health center in Wisconsin was temporarily stopped after a killdeer and its four eggs were discovered.‎ ‎24. What can we learn about Bluesfest?‎ A. It is the first music festival in Canada. ‎ B. It is an important event for music lovers.‎ C. It is a music festival held every two years. ‎ D. It is a challenging outdoor activity in Ottawa.‎ ‎25. What was Monahan’s attitude toward hosting the festival?‎ A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Unsure. D. Indifferent.‎ ‎26. The underlined word “dilemma” is closest in meaning to “ ”.‎ A. a difficult situation B. an extreme situation C. a dangerous situation D. an encouraging situation C Smartphones are our constant companions. For many of us, their glowing screens are a ubiquitous (十分普遍的) presence, drawing us in with endless distractions. They are in our hands as soon as we wake, and command our attention until the final moments before we fall asleep.‎ Steve Jobs would not approve.‎ In 2007, Jobs took the stage and introduced the world to the iPhone. If you watch the full speech, you will be surprised by how he imagined our relationship should be with this iconic invention. This vision is so different from the way most of us use these devices now.‎ In his remarks, Jobs spent an extended amount of time demonstrating how the device utilized (应用) the touch screen before detailing the many ways Apple engineers had improved the age-old process of making phone calls. It’s the best iPod we’ve ever made,” Jobs exclaimed at one point. “The killer app is making calls,” he later added. Both lines drew thunderous applause.‎ The presentation confirms that Jobs imagined a simpler iPhone experience than the one we actually have more than a decade later. For example, there was no App Store when the iPhone was first introduced, and this was by design. Jobs was convinced that the phone’s carefully-designed native features were enough. He did not seek to completely change the rhythm of users’ daily lives. He simply wanted to take experiences we had already found important-listening to music, placing calls, generating directions-and make them better.‎ The minimalist (简约主义者) vision for the iPhone Jobs offered in 2007 is unrecognizable today-and that is a shame.‎ Under what I call the “constant companion model,” we now see our smartphones as always-on portals (通道) to information. We have become so used to it over the past decade that it is easy to forget the novelty (新奇之处) of the device. It seems increasingly clear to me that Jobs probably got it right from the very beginning: Many of us would be better-off returning to his original minimalist vision for our phones.‎ Practically speaking, to be a minimalist smartphone user means only using your device for a small number of features that do things of value to you. Otherwise, you simply put it away outside of these activities. This approach dethrones (废黜) this device from the position of a constant companion down to a luxury object, such as a fancy bike, that gives you great pleasure when you use it but does not dominate your entire day.‎ Early in his 2007 keynote, Jobs said, “Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone.” What he didn’t add, however, was the follow-up promise: “Tomorrow we’re going to reinvent your life.” The smartphone is fantastic, but it was never meant to be the foundation for a new form of existence.‎ If you return this innovation to its original role, you will get more out of both your phone and your life.‎ ‎27. The underlined word “it” in the last but two paragraphs probably refers to .‎ A. information B. the smartphone ‎ C. the always-on portal D. the constant companion model ‎28. According to Steve Jobs, what was the main selling point of Apple’s first iPhone?‎ A. It allowed the users to have access to the internet.‎ B. It was actually an iPod that could make phone calls.‎ C. It was installed with applications by third-party developers.‎ D. It could fulfill people’s desire to multitask in their daily lives.‎ ‎29. According to the article, a minimalist smartphone user tends to .‎ A. expect to reinvent his life with the device B. buy the latest model of iPhone and see it as a luxury C. remove all the unnecessary applications from the device D. spend more time working than playing with his device ‎30. The author’s purpose in writing the article is to .‎ A. tell readers why Steve Job created the iPhone B. remind readers not to be addicted to their smartphones C. show readers that smartphones can greatly change our lives D. encourage readers to block internet access on their smartphones 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Being scared is not always a treat. When a balloon pops, we may jump. 31 How does the body triggered(激发)these reactions? When we encounter something we're not familiar with, our brain and body start making changes to help prepare us for the unknown. These changes are part of the body's "threat," "stress," or "fight — or — flight" response. This response is triggered by the five senses, which are always sending information to the brain. 32 , the brain sounds a danger alarm. It releases chemicals into the bloodstream, and those chemicals act on different parts of the body. Once the body is alert(警觉的),the brain decides whether or not the danger is real.‎ ‎33 It urges a person to hide, run away, or defend oneself. Faster heartbeat and breathing send more blood and oxygen to the muscles so they're ready when they're needed. Stress chemicals can make a person more alert. Our memories also help protect us. We keep a close eye on babies because they don't understand what might hurt them. As babies grow, they learn what's unsafe, and their brains store those memories 34 ‎ Experiences can lead to long-lasting fears that may stop a person from trying new things. We're born with the ability to feel fear, but a lot of what we're afraid of is learned. A long-lasting fear can mean you’re had a bad experience, and your brain doesn't want you to have it again. Many people have beaten their own fears. Here's one method. 35 , they learn the facts about anything that seems scary. Knowledge can help a person feel less afraid.‎ A. Instead of listening to their imagination B. When they signal something unexpected C. Our heart beats harder, and we breathe faster D. Then their brains use fear to warn them of dangers E. It's good to have a healthy sense of what's dangerous F. Fear is a tool that the brain uses to keep the body safe G. I was often the only African American at a swim competition. I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a bookshelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up.‎ One summer day, the day before a big swim meet, I decided to break the news to my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her of my desire to quit swimming, she looked me into my face, saying firmly but warmly: “Baby, remember these words:’ A quitter never wins and a winner never quits.’ Your grandfather didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that swim meet tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”‎ The next day we arrived at the swim meet late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 ‎ age group. My coach insisted I be allowed to swim with the older group. I knew she was including me in the race so our long drive would not be wasted, and she had no expectations whatsoever that I would come in anything but eighth place and only that because there were not nine lanes.‎ As I was mounting(走上) the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were here to do one thing—beat me! All of a sudden my grandma’s words rang in my head:” Quitters never win and winners never quit. As it won’t be long before I graduate from high school, I have to select an ideal university in advance, which makes me really annoyed. My parents and I failed to reach the agreement on where to further my education.‎ In my parents’ eyes, I’m still so fragile and innocent that I can’t be too far away from home. However, I have been a young adult and longed for independence and liberty. I have determined to prove myself via leaving for the university away from Fujian.‎ Since you have been away from America and studied in China for several years, I really need your advice on how to persuade my parents to support my idea and convince them that I can take good care of myself.‎ Looking forward to your reply.‎ Yours,‎ Li Hua 读后续写:‎ Possible answer:‎ SPLASH(扑通一声)! I was swimming harder than I’d ever swum before. As I drew my right arm back, I noticed I was tied with one person. I assumed that we were battling for the eighth place but I refused to finish dead last, so I added more kick on the last 200 yards. I hit the wall and looked to the left and to the right for the swimmers who had beat me, but no one was there. They must have already out of the water.‎ Just then, cheers and claps overwhelmed me. I raised my head to see my coach screaming ‎ hysterically(歇斯底里地). My eyes followed her pointing finger and I couldn’t believe what I saw. The other swimmers had just reached the halfway point of the pool! That day,at age 15, I broke the national 17/18 -year-old 400-freestyle record. I hung up my honorable mentions and replaced them with a huge trophy. “Yes, grandma, you are right. Quitters never win, winners never quit.”‎
