The first time Namfon Pitaxsin went to Australia, she________‎ A. ate in a revolving restaurant B. met more Americans than Asians C. saw some special Australian animals D. enjoyed the music in the Opera House B A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the treat they see. ‎ Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment. ‎ By the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened. A survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in earlier were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible.‎ Actually, the ability to put off reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn't show up on an IQ test. The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists' concerns. But brain theory can't explain why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would defeat a less resistant person.‎ Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people's success, brain ability as measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as "character". ‎ EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together; how one's ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put intelligence to use. Among the ingredients for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ accounts for about 20%; the rest depends on everything from social class to luck. ‎ While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear that EQ results in misuse. ‎ ‎24. The experiment with the four-year-olds makes it clear that ________.  ‎ A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment ‎ B. emotional intelligence won't show up until adolescence C. candy can be used to measure a person's emotional intelligence ‎ D. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success ‎25. The underlined word "upbeat" in Paragraph 4 probably means ________. ‎ A. kind       B. optimistic       C. disappointed     D.  powerless ‎26. Why does the author mention the experiment at the beginning of the text? ‎ A. To amuse both the children and readers. B. To prove the scientist's wisdom.‎ C. To introduce the topic of the text. D. To show us how to do an IQ test. ‎ ‎27. What is most likely to be written in the paragraph that follows? ‎ A. Information about famous people with high EQ.   ‎ B. Some reasons why EQ is a relatively new field.‎ C. Examples showing the opposite voice about EQ. ‎ D. Strong demand for basic emotional education.‎ C Have you ever thought about what will people die of 100 years later? It is not a simple question, if you have not been paying attention to the revolution in bio-technology. With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a much longer time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today’s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging, will just become history.‎ When it comes to technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond l20 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take ‎ medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on — in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to replace of old ones.‎ It sounds exciting to get the idea that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future. ‎ ‎28. A journalist can work with general issues or specialize in certain issues. However, it is not so easy a career to be a good journalist. 36 ‎ ‎ 37 It is important that you can get on and work quickly and efficiently with the other technical and creative production team members. Time is very literally money in media production so there is no room for teamwork difficulties. When there are tough deadlines or late nights everyone must get together to complete the task at hand. 38 For example, can you build up a working relationship very quickly with people who you may be meeting for the first time? ‎ You also need good written and oral communication skills and must have a concise writing style — writing essays is not good evidence for this! Employers will expect you to have a good knowledge of current affairs and a curious nature, and to be flexible---especially with regard to working hours. 39 So how experienced are you in putting in extra hours?‎ Two key qualities of journalists are a curious nature and the ability to ask the right questions at interview! 40 It is a waste of time and energy to ask the questions that you can find in books on interview skills. If you research a company well enough, you will find a number of questions naturally arising that you wish to be answered.‎ You should, though, concentrate on questions that show your interest in, and motivation to do, the job itself, rather than the rewards it will bring.‎ A. An employer will want to know that you can meet these demands.‎ B. Working as part of a team is common in many media jobs.‎ C. Would you like to be a productive journalist?‎ D. The best questions to ask are those that you really would like to know the answers to.‎ E. Many demands can be made on your time.‎ F. Curiosity is a good character for many careers.‎ G. Our schoolmates are highly concerned about the increasing lack of energy and provide their own suggestions.‎ Some students suggest that we shouldn’t waste any food or paper, though they appear very easy to get. Meanwhile, some other students think it advisable to refuse to use disposable chopsticks and plastic bags. Besides, it is also strongly recommended that those used textbooks as well as reference books of graduates, which are still in good condition, not be thrown away but recycled.‎ Actually, there are still quite a lot that we can easily do: say, try to take buses or ride bicycles instead of driving cars, etc. All of these will definitely help to build an energy-saving society.‎ 听力录音:‎ Text 1‎ M: Do you take cream and sugar in your coffee? ‎ W: No, thanks. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with those delicious foods. With proper planning though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you. Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a big dinner, have a small, low-fat snack. This may help to keep you from overeating when you see tables full of delicious food. ‎ Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate. A large plate will encourage you to have more than you need. Stay away from high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have a lot of fat in them. Choose meats containing little or no fat. Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables. If you have a sweet tooth, try fruits. They don’t have as much fat as cream and chocolate. ‎ Don’t take a break from exercise during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off extra calories. ‎
