Others didn’t do quite enough. Fred Baines was one of them. He spent more time drinking in the Students’ Union than working in the library. ‎ Once at the end of the term, we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. In my room the night before the test, Fred was watching TV. Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But on that night he looked perfectly calm. Then he told me of his plan.“It’s very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test. I’ll take a coin into the examination room. I haven’t studied a chemistry book for months, so I’ll just toss the coin. That way, I’m sure I’ll get half the questions right. ”‎ ‎  The next day, Fred came happily into the exam room. As he sat tossing a coin for half an hour he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.‎ The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor(走廊). “Oh, good,” he said, “Have you got the result of the test?” The professor looked at him and smiled, “Ah, it’s you, Baines. Just a minute.” Then he reached into his pocket and took out a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it. ‎ ‎ “I’m terribly sorry, Baines,” he said, “You failed!”‎ ‎24.This story mainly wants to tell us ________.‎ A.chemistry is really hard to learn ‎ B.there were too many questions for students to prepare for C.good exam results needs hard study ‎ D.tossing a coin can not always decide the result ‎25. Fred Baines was one of those who ________.‎ A.did just enough to pass the exam B.did not work hard enough for their studies C.had too much other work for the Students’ Union D.were quite good at passing exams ‎26. The professor tossed the coin to tell Baines that ________.‎ A. he was satisfied with his way for the exam B. he wanted to make friends with him C. his way for the exam would never work D. the exam result depended on the coin C A teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure(安全的). To some teenagers independence means a lot to them, and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence.‎ ‎    Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own. The best way for a teenager to learn lesson is through experience. I think it is beneficial for teenagers to have freedom.‎ ‎    Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendship at school. Some might say that this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their school work. I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their school work. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so. Instead, isn’t this a ‎ good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone? Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate better with their friends.‎ ‎    Privacy is another issue between parents and their teenagers. Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room. This also gives them a sense of independence. It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home. I know that my mom always goes in my room when I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door.‎ ‎28. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?‎ A. Kids know how to live independently.‎ B.  Some parents allow their kids no freedom.‎ C.  It benefits teenagers to have freedom.‎ D.  Kids have a dull routine every day.‎ ‎29. In the opinion of the author, ___________.‎ A. parents should make it easy for kids to communicate with their friends B. good friendships between kids harm their school work C.  it is unnecessary for a kid to have a cell phone D.  kids should focus on the school work ‎30. How do teenagers usually feel when their parents enter their rooms in their absence?‎ A. Disappointed.     B. Lucky.      C. Angry.     D. Calm.‎ ‎31. The author hopes to have her door locked in order to ______________.‎ A. keep her father from reading her dairy     B.  prevent her mother entering her room C.  Protect herself from any harm            D.  Stop thieves from going in D When we think of leadership ,we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate?‎ Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their ‎ will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long term. They will also experience fear.‎ Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they associate you with this emotion of fear, they will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.‎ The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation(积极性). Today’s work place is all about relationships. Anyone works harder in a positive environment in which they’re recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the pay check is not the single most motivating factor (因素) in the work life of most people.‎ The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional intelligence---knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.‎ ‎32. An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when___________.‎ A. he is forced to do things B. he cannot work at his best C. he feels his brain shut down D. he thinks of his work as too heavy ‎33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A .People tend to associate leadership with fear B. Working conditions affect people's physical health C. Good relationship is the key to business success D .Smart people are more functional in the work place.‎ ‎34. To positively influence employees a leader should first of all___________.‎ A .provide better suggestions B. develop his own personality C. give his employees a pay raise D. hide his own emotion of fear ‎35. Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to___________.‎ A .provide a variety of project for employees B. help raise employee’s living standards C. give employees specific instructions D. deal wisely with employees’ emotions 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。‎ Make the right choices What is life’s greatest gift? __36___Choice is the ability to select one course of action from a set of alternatives to achieve a goal. What is so great about choice? It transforms us from dumb animals into artists. Each of us becomes another Michelangelo. Choice becomes nothing other than the tool we use to sculpt (雕刻)our life. The tool doesn’t come free, however, for the price of choice is responsibility. __ 37____The reward is happiness.‎ Life is not still. It is a flow. __38___ We constantly need to monitor where we are on our journey. We need to ask questions: Am I moving closer to my goals? If not, what corrective measures can I take? What action will I take now to readjust myself to my goals? Choice is power. Choice is at the heart of life. It is the creative power of life.‎ ‎__ 39____ And your life becomes more convenient or comfortable because of them. For example, you decide which stores to shop at and which gas station to go to. But the decisions that we make to sculpt our lives are far more important than deciding where to shop. The more we appreciate the difference between minor and ‎ major decisions, the greater the probability that we will experience happiness and fulfillment.‎ All chess lovers realize that it isn’t necessary to win to enjoy the game. The pleasure is in the playing. Life is like a chess game.___40___‎ A. It is freewill or choice.‎ B. You have to make choices every day.‎ C. Make the best moves you can under the circumstances.‎ D. But when we accept and carry it out, we get a great return.‎ E. Every choice we make leads us closer to or farther from our goals.‎ F.
