Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was her. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人). I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan. ” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me cheek already two week lone. ” And then, in perfect English I said: “I’m getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived. ” Then she talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss. ” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week. ” The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world. 21. B Hughie Erskine was in love. The girl he loved was Laura Merton, the daughter of a retired army officer. They were the best-looking couple in London and had not a penny between them. Her father was very fond of Hughie, but would not hear of any engagement. “Come to me, my boy, when you have got ten thousand pounds of your own, and we will see about it,” he used to say, and Hughie looked very miserable in those days. One morning he went to see a great friend of his, Alan Trevor, who was a painter. When he came into the studio, he found Trevor putting the finishing touches to a wonderful life-size picture of a beggar-man. The beggar himself was standing on a platform in a corner of the room. He was a dried-up old man with a lined face and a sad expression. Over his shoulder was thrown a rough brown coat, all torn and full of holes. His thick boots were old and mended, and with one hand he leaned on a rough stick, while with the other he held out his ancient hat for money. “Poor old fellow!” said Hughie. “How miserable he looks!” At that moment a servant came in and told Trevor that a man wanted to speak to him. Trevor went out. The old beggar-man sat down to rest for a moment. He looked so miserable that Hughie pitied him, and felt in his pockets to see what money he had. All he could find was a pound and some pennies. “Poor old fellow,” he thought to himself, “he wants it more than I do, but I shan’t have much money myself for a week or two.” and he walked across the room and slipped the pound into the beggar’s hand. The old man jumped and a faint smile passed across his old lips. “Thank you, sir,” he said, “Thank you.” That night Trevor told Hughie that the old “beggar” was Baron Hausberg, one of the richest man in Europe, who had asked him a month before to paint him as a beggar. He also said that he had told the old man all about the lovely Laura and the ten thousand pounds. The next morning, as he was at breakfast, an old gentleman brought Hughie a letter from Baron Hausberg. On the envelope was written, “A wedding present to Hughie Erskine and Laura Merton, from an old beggar” and inside was a cheque for ten thousand pounds. 25. The girl’s father__________. Studies show that ambitious women are often less likely to get ahead than those who show more female characteristics. However, if they try to adapt, promotion comes their way. The findings, which will let assertive (过分自信的) women down, suggest that the best way for a woman to succeed in a man’s world is to act like a lady. Past research has shown that women with self-confidence and other characteristics linked with successful management can be put aside at work in favor of gentle types. It is thought that while such characteristics are highly praised in men, ambitious women are penalized for not being feminine enough. Instead of being seen as strong managers, ambitious women are in an unfavorable situation. In one US study, researchers explored personal details from university students applying for a summer job at a bank. A women applicant who attempted to apply for special wages to pay her transport or living costs was three and a half times less likely to get a job offer than a similar male. In fact, this kind of woman was the least likely to get taken on. The latest study set out to explore what women who are naturally assertive could do to get ahead in the workplace. Eighty young men and women completed surveys about their personality while studying in college. Around eight years later, the researchers got back in touch with them to find out how their careers were going. Some had been promoted five times, others just once or twice. The results showed that ambitious women who stick to their decisions had been promoted less than more feminine groups. But the ambitious women who made a conscious effort to not appear to be threatening by “self-controlling” their behavior had done better than those who had carried on ignoring others’ views. 29. What does the underlined word “penalized” mean in the second paragraph? A. Treated badly B. Asked to leave C. Looked down upon D. Made sb. have a disadvantage 30. The ambitious women in the latest study ______. A. had been promoted only once or twice B. tried hard to be as successful as gentle types C. were more accepted at work after they controlled their behavior D. filled in the surveys after they graduated from college 31. What can we learn from the passage? A. Successful management is highly praised in women. B. Some women will be disappointed by the massage. C. Men acting like a lady are likely to be promoted at work. D. The latest study was aimed at how to become a successful boss. 32. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. How assertive women can control their behavior. B. Feminists can do better by controlling their behavior. C. Acting like a man won’t get women promoted at work. D. How the ambitious women can avoid acting like men. D Winners Club You choose to be a winner! The Winners Club is a bank account specially designed for teenagers. E It's every child's dream: you find yourself in a sweet shop without owners and can finally eat as many lollipops (跳跳糖) and marshmallows (酸话梅) as you please. Tokyo's allyoucaneat “cheap candy” bars make the childhood dream come true, giving Japanese under stress a chance to relive the good old days when their biggest problem was deciding between lollipops and marshmallows. The “cheap candy” bar in Tokyo's fashion Ebisu neighborhood is decorated like an old corner shop with dark wooden walls and the bar is full of Japanese childhood favorite food. Old posters and a blackandwhite TV bring back that special 1960s nostalgic (怀旧的) feeling. “This is good old Japan, something I haven't even seen myself because that period has passed,”said 24yearold Natsuko Kohashi,a guide,as she sat with a glass of beer and a basket of candy bars. “People dream about the peaceful time, 20 years after the war, when things were kind of slow but people had hope,” she said. “The economy started to recover and everyone got richer.” Tokyo is full of places which satisfy the needs of depressed office workers who have a desire for the years before the financial bubble (泡沫) of the 1980s,when stock markets (股市)and property prices went up quickly and then collapsed, leaving Japan in a depression for most of the next decade. There are cafes where waitresses dressed as maids play childish games with customers, and theme parks that recreate school cafeterias and 1960s living rooms. At another table at Ebisu's bar,a lively group of men and women in their 20s,some wearing suits, picked at a selection of sweets. “I used to eat sweets as a child,”one of the men said. “Now we are under great stress. When we were children, there was no stress and we were very happy.” 37. The passage is mainly about ________.
