She let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there's a deer there!” Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp antlers (角) on each side of its head. As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer's head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged closer. “I knew I was in trouble,” Sue says. She went to pick up a stick for self-defense, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flew down her leg. Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road. When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. "I was kicking it to get its attention," she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the women. Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue's injured leg. “We’re going to get you to a hospital,” Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer’s head and neck, but the blows didn’t scare it away. “I was losing faith,” she says. “A couple more strikes, Alexis,” said her father. “You can do it.” Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away. Alexis got in the driver's seat and sped toward the nearest hospital. After Sue was treated, she tearfully thanked her rescuers. “You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help,” she says, “not to beat up a deer.” 21. What was Sue doing when she was attacked by the deer? A. She was driving home. B. She was resting on the road. C. She was taking exercise. D. She was feeding wild animals. 22. What did Alexis do to save Sue? A. She pushed the deer away. B. She hit the deer with her feet C. She drove the car to hit the deer. D. She beat the deer with a hammer. 23. Which of the following words can best describe Alexis? A. Strong. B. Cruel. C. Energetic. D. Brave. 24. What is the best title for the passage? A. A Woman Was Seriously Injured B. A Dangerous Deer Attacked a Woman C. A Girl Rescued Her Father Successfully D. A Teenager Saved Others from a Deer Attack B Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead.” Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt—a mistake 75% of the US population makes every day. The big question is why. There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common. Myth Number One:It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident. Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you’ll have traveled through a windshield(挡风玻璃) or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty five times greater in cases where people are “thrown clear”. Myth Number Two: Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water. Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situation, not to be trapped in them. Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour(mph). Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving head first into the ground from a height of 10 meters. 25. Why did Elizabeth say to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead.”? A. He was driving at great speed. B. He was running across the street. C. He didn’t have his safety belt on. D. He didn’t take his medicine on time. 26. According to the text,to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident is very dangerous because you ______. A. may be knocked down by other cars B. may get seriously hurt being thrown out of the car C. may find it impossible to get away from the seat D. may get caught in the car door 27. Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe ________. A. the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident B. they will be unable to think clearly in an accident C. they will be caught when help comes D. cars catch fire easily. C We had it all We thought we had it all-a beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way, two cars—and we loved it. We spent money like it was going out of style. Then the market turned and my husband’s job as a bigwig(大人 物)at a construction company was gong. The company was closing down for ever. We both started looking for jobs right away, but there weren’t any to be found. With each passing day our panic increased and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got. I felt feelings of great love for my husband that I hadn’t felt in years. ① That’s why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I knew that he had no control over the economy, however, he constantly degraded( 降 低 … 身 份)himself and his spirit sunk lower with each unkind comment. I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job. ② Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside and said, “We have four healthy children. That’s what’s important. That makes you a rich man.” “But what if we lose the house? They’ll hate me-you’ll hate me,” he replied. I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye. ③ “If we live in a cardboard box on the empty place across the street I will be happy-as long as I have you.” I smiled again as I realized that I wasn’t saying it. Somehow, in all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said “I do”. I could see relief wash through him as his shoulders and neck relaxed and the tension left his body. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadn’t in quite some time.④ We are still struggling financially, but I consider us well-off because we have something that money can’t buy and no one can take away from us. 29. In the wife’s opinion, what is important in her family? A. A beautiful house B. Healthy children C. Expensive cars D. Desirable jobs 30. Which of the following agrees with the passage? A. The husband has found his jobs B. The family has lost their house C. The family has four children D. They live in a cardboard box. 31. Which is NOT the effect of the financial crisis towards the family? A. They spent money like it was going out of style. B. The husband wasn’t a bigwig in the company any more C. The wife felt feeling of love for her husband. D. They realized there is something that money can’t buy between them. 32. Where can we put the missing sentence “It was a turning point for us as a couple and a family.”? A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④ D Most airlines go all out to ensure their passengers have the best possible flight experience. Now, Europe’s low-budget airline, easyJet, wants to extend the positive experience beyond the plane ride with “Sneakairs” 一 smart shoes that allow visitors to explore new cities and towns without ever looking at a map. To transform Sneakairs from an ordinary shoe to a tour guide, all the wearer has to do is enter his or her desired destination into the easyet smartphone app. A built-in GPS will determine the wearer? s starting location while the Google Maps navigation (导航)tool will help chart the best route. Whenever a change of direction is necessary, the app will communicate with die appropriate shoe via the Bluetooth and cause it to vibrate(振动).For example f if the wearer needs to turn right, he/she will feel the sensation in the right shoe. Should the user miss the turn, the smart shoes will both vibrate at the same time, reminding him/her to change course. Visitors that wander off the suggested path or decide to take a break for a cup of coffee or a meal have nothing to worry about. The smart app will automatically determine the new location and chart out a new route. Once the desired destination is reached, Sneakairs will vibrate three times to inform the user of the arrival and then go back to being ordinary shoes—until their navigation services are needed again! Sneakairs is certainly not the first navigation shoe in the market. However, easyJet is the first airline to offer them to passengers just as they are about to land in an unknown city. However, before Sneakairs can go mainstream, the easyJet team still needs to make some adjustments. Among the challenges that need to be addressed is the smart shoe’s three-hour battery life, which is hardly enough for a tourist to catch all the delights a new city or town has To offer! 33.
