Most teachers would immediately ‎ think of him as a problem student.‎ However, Anna was different. She believed the student was above average in other areas so she created a strategy to find out.‎ Anna didn’t tell the parents. Instead she organized a handful of activities in the class to get more information. In place of calling out for volunteers in class she created a competition for each Friday: Girls vs. Boys.‎ The first week the class was totally enthusiastic. Everyone wanted to win. Even the boy had his hand up the whole time trying to get a turn. Yet, Anna waited, and waited, and waited. Finally the wise teacher paired the boy with the most hardworking girl student in class. Now the two teams had a close score, all the students sat back eager to see the result. As the teacher placed the question on the board, most of the students began to shake their heads: This was a question they had never covered in class.‎ ‎“Go!” the teacher yelled. Both students started doing it slowly thinking of how to solve the difficult question. Their classmates, full of excitement, shouted, “Hurry, hurry, hurry!” The boy finished it just seconds before the girl and raised his arms, “I won!” Almost nobody could believe the student they admired failed until Anna confirmed (确认) the result.‎ This was what Anna tried to get---it turned out that the student wasn’t bad, he was bored.‎ 22. Which words can be used to describe Anna?‎ A. unique and cheerful B. experienced and devoted ‎ C. creative and wise D. helpful and encouraging C From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write or draw. Many people believe that music helps creativity (创造力), but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that opinion.‎ Psychologists from Lancaster University, The University of Gavle, and The University of Central Lancashire say that their findings indicate music harms creativity.‎ To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants (参与者) complete verbal insight problems used to encourage creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music was played in the background. They found that background music greatly harmed the participants’ ability to complete tasks related to verbal creativity.‎ The research team also tested background noises such as those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no effect on ‎ participants’ creativity. ‎ The tasks were simple word games. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word related to all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be ”sun” (sundress, sunflower, etc).‎ Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while listening to three different types of music: unfamiliar music with unfamiliar lyrics(歌词), instrumental music, or music with familiar lyrics.‎ ‎“We found strong evidence of worse performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” says co-author Dr. Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University.‎ Dr. McLatchie and his colleagues found that music disturbs the verbal working memory processes of the brain, harming creativity. Also, as to the library background noises having seemingly no effect, they believe it was because library noises create a “steady state” environment that doesn’t affect concentration. Even familiar music with well-known lyrics harmed participants’ creativity, even although it may cause a positive reaction. ‎ ‎“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music helps creativity, and instead prove that music affects creative performance in insight problem solving whether it contains lyrics, familiar lyrics or unfamiliar lyrics.”‎ 29. It can be learned from the research that ______________. ‎ A. a quiet environment is good for creativity B. library background music has no effect on creativity C. listening to music can encourage creativity D. familiar music helps people concentrate on work 30. How is the research done? ‎ A. By giving examples B. By making comparisons C. By explaining reasons D. By listing numbers ‎31. Which of the following is the best title?‎ A. Music and creativity B. Turn down music C. What music to choose D.
