They can also be ranked by their openness and friendliness toward visitors. You might be shocked to find out that, for example, the USA is number 102 on the list of the least welcoming places, 140 being the most unfriendly land.‎ Mongolia Mongolia was closed for quite some time and opened up to foreigners only 20 years ago. That’s probably the major reason why it is not yet experienced enough in hosting tourists. The country is beautiful, with huge spacious areas of land that are low populated. There local people are not yet used to being visited by foreign guests.‎ Slovakia There are, undoubtedly, pluses as well as minuses in every country. Slovakia is not the perfect destination for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, Slovakia is becoming more and more similar to the rest of European countries surrounding it. Sameness is not the best quality. As ‎ a rule, tourists want to travel and see things they have never seen before. It is good that the land’s countryside is still unique, although it is also being commercialized day by day.‎ Iran Iran is not the best place to travel to. It is located close to Pakistan with its negative political atmosphere. Western visitors are not welcome over there and embassies (大使馆) advise against traveling to Iran. The population, contrary to the country’s government, consists of very friendly and welcoming people.‎ Kuwait In Kuwait people are warm and friendly. It has a unique history, plenty of traditions and customs. People respect their culture and are very religious. It is a Muslim country, which means that you are not allowed to drink alcohol. If you happen to visit Kuwait during Ramadan, you will not be allowed to eat in public places, either.‎ Russia Russia is truly a special place. It is definitely worth visiting. What you might not find attractive is the corruption and bureaucracy (官僚主义) that rule in some certain official circles. Another nuisance you should be ready for is that, as a visitor, you’ll be asked to receive an invitation. Only then will you be able to apply for a visa. Once you arrive in Russia, you’ll be warmly greeted and accepted by the local people.‎ ‎21.You’ll meet friendly people in the following countries except in _____.‎ A. Iran B. Kuwait C. Mongolia D. Russia ‎22.Which of the statements is true according to the text?‎ A. You can apply for a visa for Russia at will.‎ B. If you’re fond of drinking, then Kuwait is not an ideal destination.‎ C. You’re not advised to travel in Iran due to its high cost.‎ D. Mongolia is a beautiful country with much experience in hosting tourists.‎ ‎23.Where does this passage probably come from?‎ A. A news report B. A lecture speech C. An advertisement D. A text book B ‎ The world’s insects are hurtling down the path to extinction, threatening a “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems”, according to the first global scientific review. More than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found. The rate of extinction is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles.‎ ‎“It should be of huge concern to all of us, for insects are at the heart of every food web. They pollinate the large majority of plant species, keep the soil healthy, recycle nutrients, control pests, and much more. Love them or loathe them, we humans cannot survive without insects, ” said Prof Dave Goulson at the University of Sussex in the UK.‎ The analysis, published in the journal Biological Conservation, says intensive agriculture is the main driver of the declines, particularly the heavy use of pesticides. Urbanization and climate change are also significant factors.‎ One of the biggest impacts of insect loss is on the many birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that eat insects. A small number of adaptable species are increasing in number, but not nearly enough to outweigh the big losses.‎ Matt Shardlow, at the conservation charity Buglife, said: “It is gravely sobering to see this collation of evidence that demonstrates the pitiful state of the world’s insect populations. It is increasingly obvious that the planet’s ecology is breaking and there is a need for an intense and global effort to stop and reverse these dreadful trends.”‎ ‎24.What does “are hurtling down ” underlined mean?‎ A. To climb very slow in a straight direction.‎ B. To move very fast in a particular direction.‎ C. To become lower in value or level quickly.‎ D. To speed up suddenly in a particular direction.‎ ‎25.According to the passage, ________ doesn’t cause the decline of the insects.‎ A. intensive agriculture B. urbanization C. climate change D. pests control ‎26.In Paragraph 4, the author wants to stress the decline of insects________.‎ A. by giving the examples B. by making the comparison C. by giving the definition D. by making the explanation ‎27.What is the main idea of the text?‎ A. Sharply decreasing insects numbers threaten the damage of nature.‎ B. The impacts will be brought by the insect loss.‎ C. The effective measures are taken to stop the scary trends.‎ D. The leading factors that cause insects decline.‎ C How to Make Friends, According to Science Friendship is one of life’s most important features, and one too often taken for granted.‎ The human desire for companionship may feel boundless, but research suggests that our social capital is finite — we can only handle a certain number of relationships at one time. Social scientists have used some creative approaches to measure the size of people’s social networks; these have returned estimates ranging from about 250 to about 5,500 people. Looking more specifically at friendship, a study using the exchange of Christmas cards to test closeness put the average person’s friend group at about 121 people. However vast our networks may be, our inner circle tends to be much smaller. The average American trusts only 10 to 20 people. Moreover, that number may be shrinking: From 1998 to 2017, the average number of trusted friends decreased from three to two. This is both sad and of important consequence, because people who have strong social relationships tend to live longer than those who don’t.‎ So what should you do if your social life is lacking? Here the research is instructive. To begin with, don’t refuse to consider the humble acquaintance(交情). Even interacting with people with whom one has weak social ties has a meaningful influence on well-being. Beyond that, building deeper friendships may be largely a matter of putting in time. A recent study out of the ‎ University of Kansas found that it takes about 50 hours of socializing to go from acquaintance to casual friend, an additional 40 hours to become a “real” friend, and a total of 200 hours to become a close friend.‎ If that sounds like too much effort, renewing inactive social ties can be especially rewarding. Reconnected friends can quickly recapture the trust they previously built, while offering each other a dash of novelty(新奇)drawn from whatever they’ve been up to in the meantime. And if all else fails, you could start randomly to tell secrets to people you don’t know that well. Self-disclosure makes us more likable, and as a bonus, we are more likely to favor those to whom we have revealed our soul.‎ Longing for closeness and connection is common and everywhere, which suggests that most of us are stumbling(跌跌撞撞)through the world, expecting companionship that could be easily provided by the lonesome stumblers all around us. So set aside this article, turn to someone nearby, and try to make a friend.‎ ‎28.From Paragraph 2, we can know that .‎ A. a strong social relationship can guarantee a long life B. real friendships are based on the exchange of presents C. people’s inner circle is decreasing despite large social networks D. people’s social networks depend on their desire for companionship ‎29.What does the author suggest to improve one’s social life?‎ A. Sharing secrets with close friends.‎ B. Choosing likable people as friends.‎ C. Avoiding the humble acquaintance.‎ D. Spending time for deeper friendships.‎ ‎30.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A. The tips on how to develop friendship.‎ B. The reasons for seeking companionship.‎ C. The benefits brought by a good social life.‎ D. The relationship between friendship and happiness.‎ ‎31.The author helps readers better understand his idea mainly by .‎ A. using research results B. making comparisons C. giving some examples D. telling personal stories D ‎ Last fall, I happened to overhear a student telling the others he had decided not to sign up for an introductory philosophy course. The demands of his major, he said seriously, meant he needed to take “practical” courses, and “enlightenment” would simply have to wait. For now, employability was the most important.‎ The students’ conversation fits into a larger alarming narrative about the role of the humanities in higher education. In a time of dizzying technological achievement and of rapid scientific innovation, sceptics of the humanities may question the usefulness of studying Aristotle, the Italian Renaissance or Chinese fiction.‎ Actually, I regret not interrupting that student to argue for taking that introductory philosophy course. I would have started by reminding him that, for much of America’s history, college graduates were not considered truly educated unless they had mastered philosophy, literature, political theory and history. The key role of higher education was to invite students into the conversations about matters like what it means to be alive and the definition of justice. Fostering engagement with these subjects is still an essential part of the university’s function in society.‎ I would have also mentioned to the student that he was misinformed about the job market. It is true that many employers are looking for graduates with specialized technical skills, but they also look for other capabilities. As the world is transformed by artificial intelligence, machine learning and automation, the unique human qualities of creativity, imagination and moral reasoning will be the ultimate coin of the realm. All these skills are developed in humanities courses.‎ Further, I would have argued that while a degree anchored in the sciences is an important precondition for many jobs, it is not the only route. Look no further than the founders of companies such as LinkedIn, Slack and Flickr, who are among the many tech businesspersons with degrees in the humanities, and who credit that training for their success.‎ Contrary to the widely held belief that humanities majors have a hard time getting jobs, recent studies show that those with humanities degrees are successful in the workplace, experiencing low ‎ rates of unemployment and reporting high levels of job satisfaction. The ratio between average median(中位数) incomes for humanities degree holders and those with business, engineering, and health and medical sciences degrees has been shown to narrow over the course of a career.‎ The case for the humanities can also be understood in less transactional terms and more as a foundational preparation for a life well lived. A humanities education plays a vital role in encouraging citizens to lead an examined life. It fosters critical thinking, self-reflection, empathy and tolerance, the usefulness of which only becomes more apparent as one navigates life’s challenges.‎ By all means, students should take courses they think practical and follow their interests, but if they also make a point of studying the literature of the Renaissance, or researching into modern poetry, or even taking introductory philosophy, we will all benefit.‎ ‎32.What does the students’ conversation show?‎ A. Students feel employment difficult.‎ B. Students think philosophy less important.‎ C. Students find scientific innovation amazing.‎ D. Students consider university courses unsatisfying.‎ ‎33.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 probably mean?‎ A. Highly valued. B. Equally applied.‎ C. Strictly assessed. D. Greatly improved.‎ ‎34.The author may agree that humanities _____.‎ A. discover students’ artistic ability B. prepare students for graduation C. raise awareness of social status D. provide great insights into life ‎35.Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?‎ I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion A. ‎ B. ‎ C. D. ‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ A Diet Without Enough Protein Can Cause Depression Depression is a condition so common, the World Health Organization (WHO) calls it “a leading cause of disability.”‎ Difficulty in falling asleep, loss of appetite, and loss of ability to concentrate are just a few of the other effects of depression. WHO estimates that worldwide, at any one time, 350 million people suffer from the condition. While life events such as the loss of a spouse or a job may create a happening of depression, many cases come from within and are not caused by a life event.‎ Now scientists are working on a new aspect of cure: nutrition. 36 The Indian Journal of Psychiatry reports that both before and during a happening of depression, those with the condition will show a “poor appetite…” 37 Many cases of depression, if not most cases, affect those who don’t eat properly.‎ So what does protein have to do with all this? It all comes down to amino acids (氨基酸). Proteins are made up of amino acids, chemicals known as the “building blocks of life.” There are 20 different ‎ amino acids. 38 ‎ Both the human brain and nervous system use amino acids as a substance that creates a signal from one brain cell to another or one nerve cell to another, thus relaying information between the cells. What the final result then? 39 ‎ Since amino acids make up protein, a diet which lacks in protein will cause weaker communication between the brain cells. This lessens the signal being sent from one brain cell to the next during a thought. 40 This is why depression can often express itself as anger or aggression.‎ A. The ultimate effect is how we think.‎ B. Don’t ruin your appetite by eating between meals.‎ C. Skipping meals itself can create a depressed mood.‎ D. A new research suggests that nutrition can lessen some of the risks of depression.‎ E. India is perhaps the world’s leader in researching the connection between diet and depression.‎ F. Many of them are made by the human body, but nine others, the “essential” amino acids, must be eaten in one’s diet.‎ G. The process can lead to twisted signals, which can not only lead to depression, but also, according to many scientists, aggression.‎ 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ ‎ During my second year in high school, I got sick and missed a few days. I take just as many classes as you do, but I only have about an hour of studying to do every day. And I can get all my work done either here at home or at the café down the road. ‎ M: Well, I’m majoring in physics. I have several projects due each month, and that’s after I spend ten or fifteen hours a week in the lab. You’re a psychology major. You have one midterm and one final exam for each class, right?‎ W: Yeah…‎ M: You’ve got it so easy!‎ Text 7‎ M: Hi, Jenny. Are you going to school now?‎ W: Yup. At Pedal Power, they collect second-hand bikes in the UK and send them to some of the poorest regions in the world. When they distribute bikes overseas, they don’t give them away for free. In order to continue operating they need to have a constant supply of bikes which they send out every six months. In August 2000, they simply ran out of money. It was a terrible situation. Fortunately, in October 2001 they won an Enterprise Award which helped them enormously. ‎ Dan Pearman is the founder of Pedal Power. He got the idea of exporting bicycles to developing countries while he was in Ecuador. Dan Pearman went there in 1993 and he joined a voluntary organization. Where Dan Pearman lived in Ecuador was a rural area. His neighbor had the only bicycle in the village, whereas everyone else walked everywhere. His neighbor’s business was very successful. For years Dan Pearman couldn’t understand why. Then he realized having a bike ‎ meant his neighbor could reach anywhere he liked without much trouble. Other local carpenters could only accept jobs nearby, so no matter how skilled they were, they could never do as many jobs as his neighbor.
