Back then, filmmakers used visual clues to distinguish between good and evil. You’ve probably never seen the 1922 film Nosferatu featuring a pale and hairless enemy, but that’s how old the routine is. The routine has continued its way in cinema—think Freddy Krueger's facial burns, Darth Vader’s large scar running down his face, and Voldermort's everything.‎ A new article published by Joseph explores this concept. In his study, he studied the all-time top 10 film heroes and villains from the American Film Institute 100 Greatest Heroes and Villains List. Finally, the author determined that 60 percent of the top villains have common skin or facial features.‎ While six film villains had facial scars, only two film heroes did. Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine in Casablanca both had facial scars. Being fit for a hero, these scars are not as obvious as the ones typically seen on villains.‎ However, the routine also brings a problem. According to Vail Reese, based in San Francisco the problem with this is how it translates to reality—misleading the way the public views people with facial differences outside the norm.‎ According to psychologist David Rakison, professor of evolutionary psychology at Carnegie‎ Mellon ‎University, scars scare us. First, he says, we desire a pretty face because it shows health. A marked face makes us think of sickness. Secondly, scars remind us of punishment, and tell us that a person with them may live outside the range of accepted human behavior. But just because people have scars in real life doesn't mean they're sick, mentally or physically.‎ ‎24. According to Paragraph 1, why did the routine appear at the beginning?‎ A. To follow an old tradition.‎ B. To draw the audience’s attention.‎ C. To avoid being defeated by enemies.‎ D. To show the role’s status in the silent films.‎ ‎25. From the passage, we know Joseph's article _________ .‎ A. criticized the routine B. proved the routine to be true C. showed the origin of the routine D. raised the question about the routine ‎26. What problem does the routine bring?‎ A. Misleading kids to want such features.‎ B. Making people sensitive to their looks.‎ C. Contributing to dangerous human behavior.‎ D. Planting wrong concepts in the audience’s mind.‎ ‎27. Which of the following may David Rakison agree with?‎ A. Never judge a book by its cover.‎ B. The face is the mirror of the mind.‎ C. One man's meat is another man’s poison.‎ D. A good face is a letter of recommendation.‎ C Hail(冰雹) is solid precipitate(沉淀物) that forms within thunderstorms. Hailstones are sometimes found containing sand, leaves, nuts and insects. There are even reports of hail containing small turtles, baby crocodiles and frogs! All of them have been sucked into the storm by tornadoes and subsequently enveloped in ice through repeated updraft currents(上升气流).‎ Hailstones generally begin forming as seeds of small frozen raindrops or soft ice particles known as graupel (雪丸). If graupel falls through the cloud and gets into an updraft part of a thunderstorm, it mixes with water drops and ice particles that will freeze around it as it rises, like layers of an onion. These ice-stones are carried into the tops of the cloud, gaining mass as they rise. Somewhere up there, they become too heavy for the updraft to carry and so fall towards the ground. As they fall, the outside layer melts to a clear layer.‎ Larger hail can fall at a speed of over ‎100 mph, thus causing damage and injuries to almost anything. Pea to penny-sized hail can cause light damage to trees and vegetation and possibly cause minor injuries to ‎ people and animals. Tennis ball to baseball-sized hail is obviously damaging. It can cause severe damage to crops and produce life-threatening injuries to people and animals.‎ Deaths caused by hail are rare in the US with the last known fatality occurring in March ‎2000 in Lake Worth‎, ‎Texas. A young man died from head injuries after being stuck by a softball-sized hailstone. Deaths and injuries are more common in other parts of the world where people live in poorly constructed buildings with little protection.‎ If caught in a hailstorm while driving, attempt to stop immediately or pull into a nearby safe place; otherwise, the effect of the hail will be maximized. Try to drive and park the vehicle in the direction of the hail so that it is hitting the front of the vehicle. Windscreens are generally strengthened and can withstand larger impacts than side and back windows. This will lessen any damage from flying glass to both people and equipment in the vehicle.‎ ‎28. What makes some hail contain something unusual?‎ A. Air currents.‎ B. Strong storms.‎ C. Thunderstorms and tornadoes.‎ D. Tornadoes and updraft currents.‎ ‎29. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?‎ A. How hail comes into being.‎ B. What graupel is made up of.‎ C. What different layers of hail look like.‎ D. How graupel mixes with water and ice.‎ ‎30. What does the underlined word “fatality” in Paragraph 4 probably refer to?‎ A. Frightening event.‎ B. Unexpected damage.‎ C. Serious injury in a disaster.‎ D. Death resulting from a disaster.‎ ‎31. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?‎ A. To urge people to stay away from hailstorms.‎ B. To warn drivers of the potential dangers during hailstorms.‎ C. To offer guidance to drivers on how to prevent hail damage.‎ D. To advise people to purchase necessary protective equipment.‎ D With smart technology increasingly influencing all aspects of our lives, it was only a matter of time before someone invented"smart" shoes —ones that can be made based on personal needs. Called "ShiftWear", the sneakers are the brainchild of a team of businessmen, and engineers led by New York-based designer David Coelho.‎ The adaptable shoes can be customized (私人订制) by using a smartphone app. Shoe owners will have the option of selecting a design from a variety of HD patterns by famous artists or creating one themselves. The company 's founders imagine a marketplace where artists can not only share but also sell their designs to others. Despite being electronic, the designs are clearly visible even in the brightest sunlight. What’s even cooler is that by switching on a backlight, users can even show off their designs in the dark!‎ According to Coelho, the sneakers will keep their charge"forever" if only images are displayed. Though they will need periodic recharging, active users have nothing to worry about. That's because the shoes are equipped with special Walk-N-Charge technology that powers the shoes— with every step. Inactive or power design chargers also have option of charging the sneakers without using wires.‎ The bottom part of the shoes is covered with Kevlar fibers, a kind of strong materials, reducing normal wear and tear. Even better? They are completely waterproof (not letting water through) and can even be thrown into an ordinary laundry machine for a quick wash! The company predicts that the shoes will range in price from $150 to $ 1, 000 depending on the size of the e-paper panels(嵌板、嵌条) where the designs are displayed.‎ This is not the first time that electronics and shoes have combined. Lithuania-based iShuh Technologies has come up with a similar concept that connects e-reader panels to a smartphone app via the Bluetooth. Whether these smart shoes become as popular as our smart devices remains to be seen, but they surely are attractive.‎ ‎32. What can we know about the design of the sneakers?‎ A. The designers make every pair of sneakers unique ones.‎ B. David Coelho designed the smart sneakers all alone.‎ C. The owners can design their own shoes themselves.‎ D. Using a smartphone app to design sneakers becomes popular.‎ ‎33.
