C. $7498. D. $11247. B Nobody likes to fail. It makes people feel embarrassed and discouraged. What's worse, it may cause major professional or personal trouble and lead to negativity. Basically, failure is no fun for most people. However, a vast body of research tells us that failure provides us with a chance to grow and develop, increases adaptability, and helps protect against anxiety. It's hard to change the mindset (心 态 ) of a lifetime. But even if we still can't get over the broken marriage or the failed College Entrance Examination or the work presentation that went fearfully wrong, it might not be too late for our kids. Christy Pennison, a professional consultant, says she works with an increasing number of kids and teens who show significant anxiety around a fear of failure. She said, "We want to protect our children, and we want them to live happy and meaningful lives, so we frequently tell them the harm of failure and ask them to avoid failure. The children experiencing internal and sometimes external pressure think they shouldn't fail. Meanwhile, we always have high expectations of them. So when they don't live up to a certain standard, or things don't go according to the plans, they will feel upset and anxious." Pennison argues that failures, are often the hidden learning chances that can help people develop positive qualities, like persistence, focus, flexibility, patience, and positive self-image. So what can parents do to help their children embrace (拥抱)failure instead of avoiding it at all costs?Pennison suggests directing praise towards the effort, not the result. "This allows children to build confidence in themselves, "she explains." Acknowledging the effort can give children permission to try new things without a fear of failure. And the bigger picture is that the development of the mindset -'I'd rather try and fail than not try at all.'-helps them keep a belief in themselves, and expands their world of possibilities." As Pennison points out, we all fail, but how we get up after we fail is what matters. 24. What aspect do most people focus on when thinking of failure? A. The great courage to face it. B. The efforts made to handle it. C. Unpleasant side effects it brings. D. Unexpected benefits it brings. 25. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2? A. List the challenges in our life. B. Bring up the main topic. C. Add some background information. D. Stress the importance of the mindset 26. What is mainly talked about in the third paragraph? A. Christy Pennison's experience in educating children. B. Christy Pennison's comments on adolescents. C. The consequences of overprotecting children. D. The causes of children's anxiety. 27. Which of the following advice can help parents encourage kids to face failure? ①Praise kids' every achievement. ②Make kids embrace a bright mindset. ③Focus on the process of kids' effort ④Expand kids' knowledge about the world. ⑤Encourage kids to make new attempts. A. ①②④ B. ②③④ C. ①③⑤ D. ②③⑤ C People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over-the- counter (非处方的) medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗)like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it. So why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work? According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it’s easy to believe it’s medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USA Today reported. It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something so common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figuring out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral(抗病毒的) drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw(拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3-D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough. The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus(鼻病毒) A and B.But they didn’t find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against C. “This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinovirus,” study leader Professor Ann Palmenberg at University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, told Science Daily. Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists have finally built a highly-detailed 3-D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses. With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way. Soon, we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don’t really work. 28. What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold? A. They are quite effective. B. They are slightly helpful. C. They still need to be improved. D. They actually have no effect. 29. How do antiviral drugs work? A. By breaking up cold viruses directly. B. By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses. C. By preventing colds from developing into serious diseases. D. By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time. 30. What can we infer from the passage? A. The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar. B. Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold. C. Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently. D. Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure. 31. What is the best title for this passage? A. Drugs against cold viruses B. Helpful home remedies C. No current cure for common cold D. Research on cold viruses 山东中学联盟 D As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how. In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it. In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet .The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹).Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts .When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information .Rather, they remember how to find it .This is called " transactive memory (交互记忆)". According to Sparrow ,we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet .Instead ,computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is,people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing。 32.The passage begins with two questions to___. A. show the author's altitude B. explain how to store information C. describe how to use the Internet. D. introduce the main topic 33.What can we learn about the first experiment? A. Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer. B. The two groups remembered the information equally well. C. The first group did not try to remember the formation. D. The second group did not understand the information. 34.In transactive memory, people___. A. remember how to find the information B. change the quantity of information C. keep the information in mind D. organize information like a computer 35.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research? A. We need a better way to access information. B. We are using memory differently. C. We have poorer memories than before. D. We are becoming more intelligent. 第二节 (优题速享共 5 小题,每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Mind Your "Q's” Both IQ and EQ are considered important to our career success. 36 Enter adaptability quotient(AQ), a subjective set of qualities loosely defined as the ability to thrive(提高) in an environment of fast and frequent change. Every profession will require adaptability and flexibility.Say you are an accountant.Your IQ gets you through the examinations to become qualified.Your EQ helps your connect with an interviewer, land a job,and develop relationships with clients and colleagues. 37 All three quotients are somewhat complementary, since they all help you solve problems and therefore adapt .An ideal candidate possesses all three, but not everyone does. 38 While there is no definite method of measuring adaptability like an IQ test ,companies are changing their recruitment(招聘)processes to help identify people who may be high in it. Natalie Fratto , a vice-president at Goldman Sachs, suggests three ways AQ might show in potential candidates: if they can picture possible versions of the future by asking "what if questions ;if they can unlearn information to challenge presumptions ;and if they enjoy exploration or seeking out new experiences. 39_ First, limit distractions and learn to focus so that you can determine what adaptations to make. Second, ask uncomfortable questions to develop courage and normalize fear. Third ,be curious about things that fascinate you by having more conversations rather than Googling the answer, something that reduces your ability to solve difficult challenges. Over the next three years,120 million people in the world's largest economies may need to be reskilled because of automation ,according to a 2019 IBM study. 40 The ability to learn, change, grow ,experiment will become far more important than subject expertise. A. AQ is now increasingly being sought at the hiring level. B. One good thing about AQ is that experts say you can work to develop it. C.We may not all be comfortable with the pace of change-but we can prepare. D. This is because an algorithm(算法)can do these tasks faster and more accurately than a human. E. But today, as technology redefines how we work ,the skills we need to thrive in the job market are developing too. F. Having IQ but no EQ would leave you struggling to embrace new ways of working using your existing skills. G.Then ,when systems change or aspects of work are automated ,you will need AQ to accommodate this innovation and adapt to new ways of performing your role. I love the feeling of exchanging goods with my parents. So, we took a look at several houses, yet as our funds were limited, none of the houses in our price range seemed satisfactory. One agent recommended a house in particular. Although her description of the house sounded very wonderful, the price was beyond our range, so we declined. However, she kept urging us to have a look at least. We finally agreed and went to take a look. It was lovely at first sight. It was small but charming, overlooking a quiet beautiful lake. Walking through the rooms and talking with the owners, a kind and hospitable elderly couple, we felt the warmth and happiness of the marriage within that house. It was exactly the house we wanted! Perfect as it was, the price remained much too high for us. But every day, we could sit by the lake, looking at the house and dreaming of what it would be like to live there. Days later, we made an offer, which was far below the asking price. As the price was so low, we were afraid that they would laugh it off. Surprisingly, they didn't laugh at us. They renewed their offer instead. It was also much more than we could actually afford, but far less than the original asking price. The next day, we got a disappointing message that another buyer offered a much higher price. Even so, we made up our minds to talk with the owners directly. We made our final offer, which was still thousands of dollars less than the other buyer's bid. We knew it, yet we decided to have a try. Nobody knew if we could get it. 注意:1、所续写短文的词数应为150左右。 2、续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好 Paragraph 1 We went to the owners' home, only to find the other buyer visiting the owners too. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 The owner looked at us and said, ''I decide to sell my house to you! '' The buyer said, ''Because it is near the city. I want to buy it for investment. I can rent it to earn money... '' The owner thought for a while and then looked at him and said. ''I'm sorry, sir. I can't sell my house to you, because I am looking for someone who truly loves my house, not just for money.'' The owner looked at us and said, ''I decide to sell my house to you! '' Then he explained. He'd seen us sitting by the lake all those times; he knew how much we loved the place and that we’d appreciate the years of work they had put into their home; he realized he would take a loss by selling it to us, but it was worthwhile; we were the people they wanted to live there. He told us to consider the difference in the price ''an early wedding present. '' That's how we found our home and how I learned that when people are kind, they are not strangers, only friends we haven't yet met.查看更多
