Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn’s house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, ” Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible(看不见的)in the cloud and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see!” ‎ My daughter smiled calmly and said, “ We drive in this weather all the time, Mum. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.” ‎ After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read “Daffodil Garden”. We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a comer of the path, and I looked up amazed. Before me lay the most beautiful sight. Flows of flowers of different colors ‎ seemed poured down the peak and slopes. There were five acres of flowers! A seas of daffodil! It was like a fairyland all beyond description.‎ ‎“But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn. “It’s just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “That’s her home,” Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio(露台), we saw a poster. “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking” was the headline. ‎ The first answer was a simple one. “ 50,000 bulbs(鳞茎)” it read. The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.” ‎ I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than fifty years before, had begun-one bulb at a time-to bring the beauty and joy to the mountain top. Just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, had changed the world where she lived and created something of magnificence, beauty, and inspiration.‎ When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small amounts of daily effort, we too can accomplish magnificent things. Accumulation of small steps may lead to something magnificent.‎ ‎28.Which may be the best title for the passage?‎ ‎ A. An Unforgettable Experience B. A woman and Daffodils ‎ C. One bulb grown, magnificence dawns D. The Daffodil Garden C ‎ Long-time exposure to air pollution can lead to physical changes in the brain and cause trouble in learning and memory, and even anxiety. This is suggested by the results of new research on mice.‎ ‎ While other studies have shown the harmful effects of polluted air in the lungs and heart, this is the first to show the negative effect on the brain.‎ ‎ The team of Laura Fonken, Randy Nelson, from the Ohio State University, USA, has spread to the brain a previous line of research which found that fine particulate matter floating in the air mainly because of air pollution caused by humans, causes swelling in much of the body, and may be related to high blood pressure problems, and some other diseases.‎ ‎ In the research Fonken and his colleagues exposed mice to polluted air for six hours each day, five days a week, over a period of 10 months, almost half the average life length of mice.‎ ‎ Polluted air contains fine particles created by cars, factories and natural dust. Fine particles of this kind are tiny, about 2.5 micrometers in diameter, or about one-thirtieth the width of a human ‎ hair. These particles can go deep into lungs and other organs.‎ ‎ The concentration of this particulate material to which they exposed mice is equal to the concentration at which people can be exposed in some polluted urban areas.‎ ‎ After a period of 10 months, the researchers got the animals to have a series of behavioral tests. Both the behavior of mice and the results of neurological(神经的)tests done to them show that those within the polluted air had more problems in learning and memory, and higher levels of anxiety.‎ ‎ The results suggest that long-time exposure to polluted air can have measurable negative effects on the human brain and can cause a variety of mental health problems. This could have important consequences for those living and working in polluted urban areas.‎ ‎29.The results of new research on mice first suggest that polluted air mainly does harm to ________.‎ ‎ A. lungs and heart B. mental health ‎ ‎ C. normal organs D. blood pressure 30. Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word in the fifth paragraph?‎ A. bad smell B. car exhaust gas C. particulate matter D. industrial exhaust gas ‎31.The bad effects of tiny particles in polluted air are those except ________.‎ ‎ A. making human hair thinner B. high blood pressure problems ‎ C. different kinds of diseases D. swelling in much of the body D Technology offers conveniences such as opening the garage door from your car or changing the television station without touching the TV.‎ Now one American company is offering its employees a new convenience: a microchip implanted in their hands. Employees who have these chips can do all kinds of things just by waving their hands.Three Square Market is offering to implant microchips in all of their employees for free. Each chip costs $300 and Three Square Market will pay for the chip.Employees can volunteer to have the chips implanted in their hands.About 50 out of 80 employees have chosen to do so.The president of the company, his wife and their children are also getting chips implanted in their hands.‎ The chip is about the size of a grain of rice.Implanting the chip only takes about a second and is said to hurt only very briefly. The chips go under the skin between the thumb and forefinger. With a chip in the hand, a person can enter the office building, buy food, sign into computers and more, simply by waving that hand near a scanner(扫描仪). The chips will he also used to identify employees.Employees who want convenience, but do not want to have a microchip implanted under their skin, can wear a wristband(腕带)or a ring with a chip instead. They can perform the same tasks with a wave of their hands as if they had an implanted chip.‎ Three Square Market is the first company in the United States to offer to implant chips in its employees. Epicenter, a company in Sweden, has been implanting chips in its employees for a while.‎ Three Square Market says the chip cannot track the employees. The company says scanners can read the chips only when they are within a few inches of them. “The chips protect against identity theft, similar to credit cards.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the chips back in 2004, so they should be safe for humans, according to the company.‎ In the future, people with the chips may be able to do more with them, even outside the office. Todd Westby is Chief Executive Officer of Three Square Market. He says,“Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.”‎ ‎32.What is the third paragraph mainly about?‎ A. The advantages of the chips. B. The size of the chips.‎ C. The places to implant the chips. D. The potential risks of implanting the chips.‎ ‎33.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refer to?‎ A. the hands B. the credit cards C. the scanners D. the employees ‎34.We can infer that ________.‎ A. the price of the chips is reasonable ‎ B. the chips are very popular among the employees C. the chips have magic powers D. most people suspect the application of the chips ‎35.Which of the following best describes Todd Westby’s attitude towards the chips?‎ A. And if he sensed that you are staring at him, he may feel uncomfortable.‎ The same is true in our daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you. 37 . Eyes do speak, right?‎ Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. 38 . If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention, and let her know that he is admiring her.‎ However, when two persons are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking. 39 If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking as if he trying to control you, you will feel awkward. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim. He wrongly believes that looking straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. 40 ‎ Actually, eye contact should be made based on specific relationship and situation.‎ A. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex.‎ B. Actually, continuous eye contact is limited to lovers only.‎ C. After all, everybody likes to be stared at for quite a long time. ‎ D. Do you have such a kind of experience?‎ E. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel annoyed at being stared at that way.‎ F.
