My elder sisters decided to teach me to ride. We lived on Edgewood Avenue at the top of a steep hill. My sisters, Agnes and Christina, put me on my bike and pushed me hard, yelling instructions, “Pedal(踩踏板)! Control the direction! Use the brakes!” Needless to say, I was thrown down the street wildly trying to hold on. I crashed to the sidewalk, skinning my knees, injuring my hands and crying loudly. Instead of offering sympathy, my sisters yelled at me because I hadn’t listened to their instructions. Weeks passed before I tried again. This time I walked my bike to the empty parking lot behind the schoolyard. I kept repeating the instructions to myself and after a few awkward attempts and even more painful falls, I learned to ride a bike. Learning life lessons is a lot like learning to ride a bike. Some life lessons are painful to learn. We don’t always have the chance to choose where we learn them, we don’t always have good teachers and we are not always ready. Sometimes we find ourselves wildly trying to hold on. My husband, Rich, taught my sons to ride a bike. First he raised their training wheels slightly and they rode around the block getting used to the unsteady feeling. Then he would run alongside the bike holding on to the seat to steady them. Up and down our street they would go with Rich calling out, “You almost have it! You’re doing great!” until my sons would call out “Let go”. Rich would let go but still run along, just in case. It was a happy day in the neighborhood. When the life lessons come along in this New Year, may you learn them from a patient and kind teacher. May you learn them surrounded by support and encouragement. And may you have someone stay by your side until you have found victory. Also, may you never find yourself on a bike at the top of Edgewood Avenue with my sisters behind you. 21. When the author fell off the bike, her sisters ______ . A. laughed at her B. comforted her C. blamed her D. praised her 22. When it comes to learning life lessons, we ______. A. are not always in control B. can always find the proper way C. find it as easy as learning to ride a bike D. had better ignore instructions of our family members 23. What did the author’s husband do when their sons could ride by themselves? A. He still held on to the seat. B. He kept following them. C. He offered them small gifts. D. He asked them to take a break. 24. What did the author think of her sisters’ way of teaching? A. They were creative with great imagination. B. They had rich experience in teaching. C. They used traditional methods. D. They were tough on her. C It’s been just over a year since 9-year-old Zion Harvey received a double-hand transplant(移植), and now, what he really wants to do is playing football. “I feel happy about my new hands, and I don’t feel different. I like that now I can throw a football further than when I didn’t have hands,” he said. The nation’s youngest hand-transplant patient has been working hard to learn how to use his new hands. He lost his hands and his feet 7 years ago after suffering from a serious infection. In August, the boy showed off his new abilities by throwing out the first ball at a baseball game. Dr. Scott Levin, team leader of Zion’s operation, said Zion was faced with the operation much braver than many adults. “I’ve never seen Zion cry,” Levin said. “He’s just an amazing boy. He has such courage and determination and gives us all inspiration.” Zion said his courage came from the two most amazing people: his mom and his grandma. His mother, Pattie Ray, said, “It’s been a long journey but now I feel like I am living in my dream. It’s his dream, and it’s mine, too. I’m just living through him, and I’m just here to support him in any way and help him do whatever he wants to do.” However, Zion told reporters his mom wouldn’t let him try out for football. His mom said it’s too dangerous. She also pointed out that he might be playing against little kids, not professionals, and she told him they would discuss it later. Zion tried to counter her argument. “My next goal: convince Mom to let me play football,” he said. 28. What is Zion’s attitude towards his transplanted hands? A. He likes them a lot B. He tries to ignore them C. He accepts them unwillingly D. He has mixed feelings about them. 29. What did Dr. Scott Levin think of Zion? A. He was unusually quiet. B. He was well worth praising. C. He was cleverer than expected. D. He was a talented football player. 30. Which of the following words can best describe Pattie Ray? A. Sensitive and strict. B. Devoted and supportive C. Optimistic and active D. Open-minded and outgoing. 31. What does the underlined word “counter” in the last paragraph mean? A. Accept B. Prove C. Be against D. Comment D Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy-peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles each member of the family has. You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble of searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharp hours. 32. What is the best title of the passage? A. Change Your Habits B. Save Your Energy C. Daily Energy Cycle D. Temperature-and-energy Peak 33. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably_______. A. he is a lazy person B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle C. he is not sure when his energy is low D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening 34. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage? A. Unawareness of energy cycles B. Familiar monologues. C. A change in a family member’s energy cycle. D. Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members. 35. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should____________. A. change his energy cycle B. overcome his laziness C. get up earlier than usual D. go to bed earlier 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(将答案涂在71—75位置) One of the best ways to relieve stress is to learn from your mistakes. But there’s no easy answer on how to learn from your mistakes that will work every time. 36 When you’re trying to learn from your mistakes, consider the following: 1. Use Your Mistakes 37 They can be more accurately described as opportunities for learning —people generally learn more from mistakes than they learn from successes. 2. Be Forgiving 38 If you think of your mistakes as big events, you’ll be burdened with heavy pressure. Forgive yourself and face the fact. Just changing your opinion on this can make you more able to learn from your mistakes. 3. See What You Can Change Rather than thinking of who is more responsible for a situation—you or another person— 39 If you view taking responsibility through the angle of what you can change, you’ll make it a significant experience to learn from your mistakes. 4. Ask Questions Ask your trusted friends for their opinions. 40 Sometimes we’re too close to a situation to make sense of it at first, but an observer who isn’t so emotionally attached, and who can deliver their opinion with love, is what we need to help us learn from our mistakes. A. Don’t take mistakes too seriously. B. Look at other sides of the same situation. C. Stop thinking of your mistakes as failures. D. Look at the situation as a whole in terms of what you can change. E. They will tell you the truth for they can see things from both sides. F. Congratulate yourself for whatever growth you’ve gained you're your mistakes. G. However, there are some tips that will work in various situations most of time. An old story tells of an unhappy and discontented stonecutter. It is good that you feel grateful for your parents’ love. You know that most of teenagers at your age will experience the same worry with you. So don’t feel too worried and I’ll try to make some suggestions to help you. First, I’d like to suggest that you should talk with your parents openly and politely, telling them you are old enough to deal with some of your own matters on your own. Also, you should understand your parents, appreciating them for their love, instead of refusing their help rudely. Finally, I think it would be a good idea that you try your best to do well in your study and other aspects. Only by doing this, will you let them know what you need is their trust and support .I believe your parents will finally understand you. I hope you will find these ideas useful. Yours sincerely, xxx查看更多
