Recent cases included the tragic case of a 15-year-old girl whose family moved from Ireland. She hanged herself in Massachusetts in January following months of bullying. Her parents criticized her school for failing to protect her. Officials have brought criminal charges against several teenagers.   Judy Kaczynski is president of an anti-bullying group called Bully Police USA. Her daughter Tina was also the victim of severe bullying starting in middle school in the state of Minnesota. He said, "Our daughter was a very outgoing child. She was involved in all kinds of things and had lots of friends. And over a period of time her grades fell completely. She started having health issues. She couldn't sleep. She wasn't eating. She had terrible stomach pains. She didn't want to go to school."     Bullying is defined as negative behavior repeated over time against the same person. It can involve physical violence, or it can be verbal—for example, insults or threats. Spreading lies about someone or excluding a person from a group is known as social or relational bullying.   And now there is cyberbullying, which uses the Internet, e-mail or text messages. It has easy appeal for the bully because it does not involve face-to-face contact and it can be done at any time. The first serious research studies into bullying were done in Norway in the late 1970s.The latest government study in the United States was released last year. It found that about one third of students aged 12 to 18 were bullied at school.      Susan Swearer is a psychologist at the University of Nebraska Lincoln and co-director of the Bullying Research Network. She says schools should treat bullying as a mental health problem to get bullies and victims the help they need. Bullying-Old Problem Getting New Attention C Humans have been keeping animals as pets for tens of thousands of years, but Dr Jean-Loup Rault, an animal scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia, believes new companions are coming: robot pets. “Technology is moving very fast,” Rault told ABC News, “The Tamagotchi in the early 1990s was really the first robotic pet, and now Sony and other big companies have improved them a lot.” This may not sit well with pet lovers. After all, who would choose a plastic toy over a lovely puppy. But Rault argues that the robotic kind has a lot going for it: “You don’t have to feed it, you don’t have to walk it, it won’t make a mess in your house, and you can go on a holiday without feeling guilty.” The technology also benefits those who are allergic to pets, short on space, or fearful of real animals. It’s not clear whether robot pets can replace real ones. But studies do suggest that we can bond with these smart machines. People give their cars names and kids give their toy animals life stories. It’s the same with robots. When Sony stopped its repair service for its robot dog Aibo in March 2014, owners in Japan held fu nerals. As an animal welfare researcher, Rault is concerned about how robotic pets could affect our attitudes towards live animals. “If we become used to a robotic companion that doesn’t need food, water or exercises, perhaps it will change how humans care about other living beings,” he said. So are dogs and cats a thing of the past, as Rault predicts? For those who grew up with living and breathing pets, the mechanical kind might not do. But for our next generation who are in constant touch with smart technology, a future in which lovely pets needn’t have a heartbeat might not be a far-fetched dream. 28. What does the underlined phrase “sit well with” means  A. be refused by B. be beneficial to C. make a difference to D. receive support from 29. What are the advantages of robot pets a. They are plastic and feel smooth. b. Owners needn’t worry about them when going out. c. They can help cure allergies. d. They save space and costs.  A. ab B. bc C. bd D. cd 30. We can learn from the passage that___________.  A. Sony is the first company to produce robot pets Aibo. B. People can develop strong bond with their robot pets. C. Rault thinks robot pets still have a long way to go. D. Robot toys may help people care more about living beings. 31. The passage mainly tells us___________.  A. the advantages of robot toys B. the popularity of robot pets C. living pets are dying out D. robot pets are coming D A study has showed that the brain makes decisions about 10 seconds before a person realizes it. ‎ Experts involved in the study said that looking at brain activity while making a decision, they could predict the choices the subjects would make, before they realized that they had made a decision. Lead researcher John-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist (神经学家)at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, said that the new findings called into questions for “consciousness” of decisions that people make, and might even challenge ideas as to how “free” people are to make a decision at a particular moment. ‎ ‎“We think our decisions are conscious, but these data show that consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg,” Nature magazine quoted him as saying. Thinking the results “quite dramatic”, Frank Tong of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, said that 10 seconds is “a lifetime” in terms of brain activity. ‎ During the study, the brains of 14 volunteers were imaged as they performed a decision-making task. The subjects had two buttons before them, each to be operated by a different hand, which they could press when they felt the urge to. They were simultaneously (同时地)shown a stream of letters, which appeared on a screen at half-second intervals. The volunteers had to remember which letter was showing when they decided to press their button. ‎ Upon analysis of the data, the researchers realized that the earliest signal they could catch started seven seconds before the volunteers reported having made their decision. Given the delay of a few seconds in the imaging, they estimated that the brain activity could have begun about ten seconds before the conscious decision. The researchers showed that the signals were picked up from a region called the frontopolar cortex (脑额极皮层), which is located at the front of the brain, immediately behind the forehead. ‎ While writing about the observations made during the research in his study report, Haynes said that the frontopolar cortex might be the brain region where decisions are started. He also showed that the next step in the research would be to speed up the data analysis so as to enable his team to predict people’s choices as their brains would make them. ‎ ‎32.
