So researchers asked what would happen if the heat created by the servers could be captured and used?‎ Data centers of large Internet companies such as Google and Microsoft have thousands of computer servers. As these servers process information, they create large amounts of heat, so they need huge cooling systems, which send the heat into the air.‎ The Dutch company Nerdalize thinks paying for electricity to operate the servers and then paying again to cool them is a waste of energy. So it developed a device called the e-Radiator, a computer server that also works as a heating source.‎ Boaz Leupe, the chief executive officer of Nerdalize, says the e-Radiator saves money because companies don’t have to pay to cool their servers. “…The kilowatt hour you are using is used twice — once to heat the home and once to compute the client’s task without the cooling ‎ expenses.”‎ At present five homeowners in the Netherlands are testing the heating device in their homes.‎ ‎“We compensate the electricity the server uses, and that we can do because of the computer clients on the other side, and, in that way, homeowners actually get heating for free, and computer users don’t have to pay for the expenses of the data center.”‎ Jan Visser is one of the participants in the year-long experiment. He notices that the amount of heat produced by the e-Radiator depends on the work being done by the computer server. He reveals it cannot be used as the primary source of heat. But he is ready to try it. “If it provides enough warmth, I will be able to use my home’s heating system less, which will save me money.” he added.‎ Nerdalize says e-Radiators create heat temperatures of up to 55 degrees Celsius. It’s also said that the devices could save users up to $440 in heating costs a year.‎ ‎25. What can we learn from this passage?‎ A. E-Radiator can save homeowners a big sum of money in cooling the computers.‎ B. Google and Nerdalize developed the heating device, e-Radiator. ‎ C. E-Radiator has been put into use in the Netherlands.‎ D. The heating device will benefit computer users as well as homeowners.‎ ‎26. According to the passage, what’s Jan Visser’s attitude towards e-Radiator?‎ A. Cautious. B. Positive. C. Satisfied. D. Doubtful.‎ ‎27. Where can we most probably read the passage?‎ A. In an economic report. B. In a science magazine.‎ C. In an education newspaper. D. In a computer guide book.‎ ‎28. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?‎ A. Money-saving heating device.‎ B. E-Radiator, the primary source of heat.‎ C. Hot computers could be used to heat home.‎ D. Nerdalize developed e-Radiator, a heating system.‎ C Your car is a necessary part of your life. You use it every day. Of course, you want to hold on ‎ to it so you make sure it has the latest alarm and immobilizer. But despite all these, cars like yours are still stolen every day. In fact, in this country, one car is stolen almost every minute! And if your car is stolen, you only have a 50:50 chance of seeing it again.‎ Each year, car crime costs nearly £3 billion. Of course, if you’re insured, you won’t lose out, or will you? Firstly, you will have to pay extra insurance later on, and then you may not be offered the full amount by the agent. You will probably have to hire a car and you will also lose the value of the contents and accessories (配件) in the car.‎ Now comes the solution. An RAC Trackstar system, hidden in one of 47 possible secret locations in your car, is the key of our system. If your car is stolen, radio signals are sent at twenty-second intervals from the car to the RAC Trackstar National Control Center via a satellite network. Then a computer gives the vehicle’s exact location, speed and direction.‎ The RAC Trackstar National Control Center, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, will immediately inform the police in the area where the car is located. Because the police receive information every twenty seconds, they will always know the vehicle’s location. Once the thief has been arrested, your car will be returned to you.‎ RAC Trackstar is unique in being able to provide the National Control Center with details of the exact location of your car, its speed and direction. And speed is the key to successful recovery of a stolen vehicle. RAC Trackstar Control will immediately tell the police if you report your car stolen and under the 24-hour Guardian Option. It will also tell you if your car has been stolen. RAC Trackstar’s constant updates mean the police are kept informed of the car’s location. All these greatly improve your chances of seeing your car again. ‎ ‎29. If your car is stolen, you will have to ______. ‎ A. hire a new car B. pay more insurance C. buy a RAC Trackstar system D. inform the National Control Center ‎ ‎30. The underlined word “It” in the last paragraph refers to ______. ‎ A. the local police station B. the Guardian Option C. the insurance company D. the RAC Trackstar Control ‎31. According to the passage, people with RAC Trackstar ______.‎ A. automatically find directions B. seldom get their vehicles damaged C. have less chance of being in an accident ‎ D. are more likely to get the stolen cars back D Modern humans have a hard time controlling their desire to eat. Often you eat not because you are hungry, but because you are affected by many other things. How much you eat is strongly affected by how much those around you eat. People eating alone eat least. People eating with one other person eat 35 percent more than they do at home. People dining in a party of four eat 75percent more. Eating with overweight friends? You’ll eat more. Is your waitress overweight? You’ll eat more. Wide variety of food? You’ll eat more.‎ ‎ Plates can decide how sweet dessert tastes. If people ate it off a paper plate, they’d say, “This is good.” If they ate it off a fancy silver plate, they would say, “This is the greatest cake I’ve eaten in my entire life.”‎ ‎ Your knowledge about what makes food good or bad also affects how much you eat. You tend to eat more when you think the food is good, and less when you think it is bad. So Grandma’s cookies always taste better than other cookies. “Good food” even has a “health halo(光环) effect”. If we’re eating something healthy, we feel that everything in that meal is healthy. Due to this, people often believe that a cheese cake with a salad has fewer calories (卡路里) than the cheese cake alone. That’s perhaps also why eating organic (有机的) food might turn you into an annoying guy. Your brain may use anything that makes you feel good about your own morality to excuse your immoral behavior .‎ ‎ Food and hunger affect your judgment too. Hungry judges give more serious sentences. Kids who don’t eat breakfast behave worse than kids who eat their breakfast. People who have low blood sugar are more likely than the average person to have trouble concentrating and controlling their unpleasant emotions.‎ ‎32.What is mentioned as a cause of overeating?‎ ‎ A. Suffering from great loneliness. B. Being served by a helpful waitress.‎ ‎ C. Being treated to high quality food. D. Eating with many friends.‎ ‎33. According to the passage, an annoying person may be one who ______.‎ ‎ A. finds any excuse for eating more ‎ B. is crazy about the quality of plates ‎ C. competes with others in making cookies ‎ D. teaches people to stick to morality ‎34. According to the passage, people are more likely to make a bad judgment when ______.‎ ‎ A. they don’t feel hungry B. they aren’t overweight ‎ C. they have low blood sugar D. they know little about food ‎35. What would be the best title for the passage?‎ ‎ A. When Can’t We Go on a Diet? B. What Affects Eating?‎ ‎ C. How to Make Good Food D. Where to Find Safe Food 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ The Greeting Card Association reports that Americans purchase 6.5 billion greeting cards each year. 36 Here’s a look at ways to reduce your holiday greeting card costs.‎ Gold digital.‎ ‎ 37 Add photos or video to make your e-cards more personal.‎ ‎ 38 ‎ If you plan to mail your cards, remember to consider postage costs. Square cards look ‎ cool, but they cost more than a regular stamp to mail because they’re not a standard size. If cost is a consideration, stick to rectangular(矩形的)cards and avoid too heavy ribbons that increase your mailing costs.‎ Look at unexpected sources.‎ You don’t have to order custom greeting cards with your family’s photo. 39 Check ‎ dollar stores or even garage sales for affordable greeting cards. The best part is that when these cards don’t have a photo or the year printed on them, you can use any leftovers in the future.‎ Make your own.‎ Use old greeting cards(with written messages cut out,of course), wrapping paper and ‎ ribbons,or magazine photos to create your own holiday cards.‎ Shop after-Christmas sales.‎ Starting from Dec. 26, sellers who want to clear out holiday stocks will deeply discount ‎ cars, wrapping paper and decorations. 40 ‎ A.
