Imagine our natural homes growing instead of shrinking. Imagine species diversifying instead of declining. That’s rewilding. Rewilding is ecological restoration. Rewilding offers hope for wildlife, humans and the planet. Why is rewilding important and necessary? ● Our natural ecology is broken. The places where you would expect wildlife to exist have been reduced to wet deserts. The seabed has been destroyed and there have been no living creatures any more. ● Our wildlife is disappearing. Many wonderful species have declined over the past century. We’ve lost more of our large animals than any European country. ● We need keystone species. These vital species, including top predators (食肉动物), drive ecological processes. Their loss has worsened our living systems. ● Nature looks after us. Good natural ecology can provide us with clean air and water, prevent flooding and store carbon. Rewilding can leave the world in a better state than it is today. What are challenges? As a long-term project, our “rewilding britain” has its challenges. Many people are not interested, because we have got used to the lack of native forests. Many farmers oppose the idea. They thought it a crazy idea to bring back predators because they would start killing farm animals. It takes time to educate them. Above all, we need money! So we need your help! Make a donation. Help us bring back living systems and restore wild nature! With your help we can... ● Open up new chances for rewilding and push for change. ● Develop tools to educate, influence and spread the word. Thanks for your support. 21. Which of the following is the result of rewilding? A. Species become various. B. A lot of animals disappear. C. Environments are destroyed. D. Natural disasters happen regularly. 22. According to the passage, one of the challenges at present is ______. A. people’s doubts B. a lack of volunteers C. a shortage of time D. farmers’ disagreement 23. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To introduce a new project. B. To call on people to offer money. C. To warn people of the natural ecology. D. To convince people to change their mind. B Slowly, so slowly that we never even noticed how it happened, our family stopped talking to each other. Our own worlds opened up to us through the computer or the cell phone or the CD player. Family Night was born when Mom called us for dinner. Jessica and I came and sat down. Dad loaded his plate and started to rise from the table. “Where are you going?” Mom questioned. “To the living room. I have some work,” Dad replied as he hurried away. Mom’s face got tight, but she said nothing. About two minutes later, my cell phone buzzed. Jessica kept her earphones on during most of the meal. Mom was clearly upset. Family Night started the next week. Mom established three rules: no phones, no music, and no leaving the table. Everyone would eat together and play a game together “like a real family.” All seemed to be going according to Mom’s plan until the first buzz of a cell phone. After dinner, we had been playing the board game for only ten minutes when another cell phone let out an unpleasant scream. This time the phone belonged to my father. “Work’s calling. I have to answer,” he whispered as he hurried out of the room. Mom sighed, but she forced a smile and encouraged us to continue with the game. We kept playing through every interruption afterwards: the beeping of Jessica’s phone, the buzz of another text message from Darnell, the soothing voice announcing the arrival of an e-mail on Dad’s computer. When the game was over, Mom released us to our rooms. That first Family Night was not a success, but Mom stuck to it. Every Monday evening we silenced our electronics and gathered around the table; and each time, setting aside our technological toys became a little easier. The next two months my father would be taking business trips. We wouldn’t be able to have Family Night every Monday. To my surprise I realized that I would miss those few hours each week when the house was filled with my family’s laughter and conversation. I was also glad to know that when we really wanted to, we could silence the electronic buzz and just be a family again. 24. What led to the start of Family Night? A. Electronics harmed the family’s life. B. Heavy housework made Mom angry. C. Dad didn’t get along well with others. D. The children were too lazy to help Mom. 25. Family Night made the family ________ than before. A. closer B. healthier C. more considerate D. more confident 26. What words can best describe the first Family Night? A. Tiring but satisfying. B. Challenging but exciting. C. Busy but interesting. D. Unsuccessful but meaningful. 27. It can be inferred that ________. A. Dad seldom took business trips B. the author enjoyed Family Night C. Family Night would not continue D. the children threw away the cellphones C Many of us listen to music while we work, thinking that it will help us to concentrate on the task at hand. And in fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects on creativity. When it comes to other areas of performance, however, the impact of background music is more complicated. The idea that listening to music when working is beneficial to output probably has its roots in the so-called “Mozart effect”. Put simply, this is the finding that spatial rotation performance(空间旋转能力) is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart, compared to no sound at all. How sound affects performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years, and is observed through a phenomenon called the irrelevant sound effect. To study irrelevant sound effect, participants in the research are asked to complete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in the exact order in which they saw them. The tricky thing is being able to do this while ignoring any background noise. Two key characteristics of the irrelevant sound effect are required for its observation. First, the task must require the person to use their rehearsal abilities(复述能力), and second, the sound must contain acoustical variation(声学变化). Where the sound does not vary much acoustically, the performance of the task is much closer to that observed in quiet conditions. The irrelevant sound effect itself comes from attempting to process two sources of ordered information at the same time—one from the task and one from the sound. Unfortunately, only the former is required to successfully perform the recall task, and the effort in ensuring that irrelevant ordered information from the sound is not processed actually prevent this ability. A similar conflict is also seen when reading while in the presence of lyrical(抒情的)music. In this situation, the two sources of words—from the task and the sound—are in conflict. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics. What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or hinders performance depends on the task and on the type of music, and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels. 28. “Mozart effect” is mentioned to ________. A. explain how music can relax people B. show music can improve performance C. advise people to listen to Mozart music D. stress Mozart music gains wide attention 29. It can be inferred that participants in the research ________. A. have improved their rehearsal ability B. perform better in the quiet conditions C. ignore the background noise successfully D. prefer the music with great sound variation 30. Paragraph 6 is written to ________. A. support an idea B. make a contrast C. introduce a topic D. describe a fact 31. What is the best title for the passage? A. Music shapes your life B. Music develops your creativity C. Choose quiet music for your work D. Does music make you concentrate? D Bullying(霸凌) can take a variety of forms, from the verbal to the physical as well as indirect forms, such as being excluded from social groups. Bullying is clearly unpleasant, and can make the child experiencing it feel unworthy and depressed. In extreme cases it can even lead to suicide(自杀), though this is thankfully rare. Until recently, not much was known about the topic, and little help was available to teachers to deal with bullying. Perhaps as a consequence, schools would often deny the problem. ‘There is no bullying at this school’ has been a common answer if asked, almost certainly untrue. Fortunately more schools are now saying: “There is not much bullying here, but when it occurs we have a clear policy for dealing with it.” Three factors are involved in this change. First is an awareness of the damage of the problem. Second, a number of resources to help handle bullying have become available in Britain. For example, the Scottish Council for Research in Education produced a package of materials, Action Against Bullying, circulated to all schools in England and Wales as well as in Scotland. In Ireland, Guidelines on Countering Bullying Behaviour in Post-Primary Schools was published, too. Third, there is evidence that these materials work, and that schools can achieve something. Evidence suggests that a key step is to develop a policy on bullying, saying clearly what bullying means, and giving specific guidelines on what will be done if it occurs, what records will be kept, who will be informed and what punishments will be employed. The policy should be developed through consultation over a period of time. Pupils, parents and staff should feel they have been involved in the policy. Other actions can be taken to back up the policy. There are ways of dealing with the topic through the curriculum, using video, drama and literature. There are also ways of working with individual pupils, or in small groups. Work in the playground is important, too. One helpful step is to train lunchtime supervisors to distinguish bullying from playful fighting, and help them break up conflicts. Another possibility is to improve the playground environment, so that pupils are less likely to be led into bullying from boredom or frustration. With these developments, schools can expect that at least the most serious kinds of bullying can largely be prevented. The more effort is put in and the wider the whole school is involved, the more substantial the results are likely to be. The reduction in bullying and the improvement in pupil happiness is surely a worthwhile objective. 32. The writer thinks that the response ‘There is no bullying at this school’ shows _______. A. bullying can be easily dealt with B. bullying doesn’t exist in the school C. the school knows nothing about bullying D. the school lacks the knowledge and resources about bullying 33. From paragraph 2, we can learn that _______. A. There is no bullying at all in a school B. in the previous years, British government policy failed C. developments in dealing with bullying have led to a solution D. there is no research into how common bullying is in British schools 34. According to the passage, what is the key step of reducing bullying? A. Develop a policy through consultation. B. Deal with the topic through the curriculum. C. Work with individual pupils or in small groups. D. Give detailed guidelines on the right things to do. 35. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage? A. Bullying: what parents can do B. Bullying: are the schools to blame? C. Bullying: the link with academic failure D. Bullying: from no way out to prevention 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 England is the perfect place for you to travel to if you’re thinking about taking your first abroad trip.
