I was working in a paint factory. Because of the terrible smell of paint, it became normal for me to temporarily pass out during my lunch hour.‎ All of my spare time was spent writing and sending stories to any publisher that would read them, dreaming that one day losing consciousness while eating my lunch sandwiches would no longer be a part of my daily routine.‎ I discovered content mills, where a writer could devote his time to writing soul-destroying online copy. It provided a little pay, but I wouldn’t faint(昏厥) . So, I quit my day job. But it is difficult to work from home. At one time, I even lost all love for writing 500 words about a bed for a few pounds, but the terrible smell of paint reminded me to get back to writing.‎ Several months later, the money got better. I was given consistent work writing for one of the largest entertainment websites in the world. The job was simple: I complained about something wrong that happened in the society and they paid me £ 50 for each article. A guy from the website asked if I’d be interested in leaving my small town life to move to the big city of Manchester to become an in-house writer for them. I accepted.‎ After a pretty successful year, I was offered a promotion. Just 18 months earlier, I was suffering from the smell of paint on a daily basis and now I was managing a team of nine writers. I’d come a long way.‎ 24. What does the underlined phrase “pass out” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Becoming unconscious.‎ B. Losing heart.‎ C. Losing one’s memory.‎ D. Feeling sleepy.‎ 25. Something wrong happening in the society.‎ 26. Why did the author get a promotion?‎ A. Because he complained about the society.‎ B. Because he suffered a lot in his daily life.‎ C. Because he managed a team successfully.‎ D. Because he made much success in writing.‎ 21. What message does the author deliver in this passage? A. A good beginning is half done.‎ B. Never give up trying.‎ C. Behind bad luck comes good luck.‎ D. East or west, home is best.‎ C A little before nine o'clock on Tuesday night, Antonio Gutiérrez found himself facing a welcome embarrassing situation. Might he, a waitress asked, have room for a second helping of pudding?‎ By day, the Robin Hood restaurant, which sits on a side street near the centre of Madrid, is a typical Spanish bar. But at night, it transforms itself into a pioneering place where homeless people such as Gutiérrez, can dine, free of charge, at tables set with flowers and proper glasses.‎ The restaurant is the latest plan from the charity Mensajeros de la Paz (meaning messengers of peace), which was founded 54 years ago by Father Angel. Its business model, using breakfast and lunch takings from customers to offer free evening meals for the homeless, is simple enough. Its aim, however, is a little more ambitious. "The inspiration( 灵感 ) came from Pope Francis, who's spoken again and again about the importance of giving people dignity(尊严), whether it's through bread or through work," said Father Angel. "So we thought, why not open a restaurant with tablecloths and proper glasses and waiters? People with nothing can come and eat here in the restaurant and get the same treatment as everyone else. "‎ Each day, Father Angel's nearby church provides 200 homeless people with breakfast and lunch. In the evening, the new restaurant will feed 100 homeless people.‎ If the restaurant proves successful, the charity plans to expand the plan and hopes it will attract famous chefs who will come to cook in the kitchen sometimes.‎ ‎"The food here is tasty and very elegant," said Ramón Luis. "I'd give it loads of stars and I'll be back tomorrow." Gutiérrez, who has been homeless for a decade, had not eaten in such a restaurant for four or five years - except when Father Angel had taken him out.‎ 28. Why was the Robin Hood restaurant opened? D. Simple.‎ 28. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. A homeless person’s special experience.‎ B. A pioneering Robin Hood restaurant for the homeless.‎ C. Father Angel and his charity.‎ D. A plan to reduce unemployment rate.‎ D Technology offers conveniences such as opening the door for your car or changing the television station without touching the TV.‎ Now Three Square Market, an American company, is offering its employees a new welfare : a microchip implanted(微芯片植入) in their hands. Employees who have these chips can do all kinds of things just by waving their hands. Three Square Market is offering to implant microchips in all of their employees for free. Employees can volunteer to have the chips implanted in their hands. About 50 out of 80 employees have chosen to do so. The president of the company, his wife and their children are also getting chips implanted in their hands.‎ The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Implanting the chip only takes about a second and is said to hurt only very briefly. The chips go under the skin between the thumb and forefinger. With a chip in the hand, a person can enter the office building, buy food, sign into computers and more, simply by waving that hand near a scanner (扫描仪). The chips will be also used to identify(识别) employees. Employees who want convenience, but do not want to have a microchip implanted under their skin, can wear a ring with a chip instead. They can perform the same tasks with a wave of their hands as if they had an implanted chip.‎ Three Square Market is the first company in the United Slates to offer to implant chips in its employees. Epicenter, a company in Sweden, has been implanting chips in its employees for a while.‎ Three Square Market says the chip cannot track( 跟踪) the employees. The company says that scanners(扫描仪) can only read the chips which are within a few centimetres of them.“The chips protect against identity theft, similar to credit cards.”The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the chips back in 2004,so they should be safe for humans, according to the company.‎ In the future, people with the chips may be able to do more with them, even outside the office.
