And as I looked back at him, I wasn’t sure who he was, either.‎ My father had just gone through two heart surgeries and 6 days in intensive care. He’d returned to the hospital where he’d worked for 40 years. It was the hospital where all his children had been born. The doctors said that he may have a long period of confusion after the surgeries. And because he’s eighty-six, it may be many months before he returns to normal. It’s also possible he may never be “normal” again.‎ I sat there in this hospital room, spoon-feeding the man I’ve seen as powerful and capable all my life. It felt like the full circle of life had come around us. It felt good to support him, yet part of me wanted to tell him to “be normal” again. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to accept the full meaning of it: that my father may never be that powerful and capable person again.‎ Pain and suffering have visited my family, as it will visit all families. And while we hesitate to face pain and suffering, it has great lessons to teach us. Pain and suffering are well outside of the boundaries of our everyday life. When it comes, it breaks these boundaries and turns our world upside down. We become a family with all of the others who have known pain and suffering. And we have another chance to consider what’s truly important in our lives. This crisis will pass, and we’ll all be changed by it. The healing hands of time will do their work. I’m thankful that - 15 -‎ ‎ I’ve told my father everything I’ve wanted to say to him. And I’m thankful to have my family to lean on during this difficult time. We’ll all be challenged by this to show more support, care, and Jove.‎ This is as it should be. Sometimes, it takes a crisis to remind us of why we’re all here.‎ ‎24. He didn’t know the author after 2 head surgeries.‎ ‎25. How did the author feel when thinking of the pain and suffering his family had?‎ A. Grateful. B. Inspired C. Exhausted. D. Sorrowful.‎ ‎26. What does the author probably agree with?‎ A. Life is fragile than expected.‎ B. Something nice weighs light.‎ C. Pain and suffering often go hand in hand.‎ D. We should treat the old in an abnormal way.‎ ‎27. What does the author aim to express in this passage?‎ A. Pain and suffering are bound to pass.‎ B. Pain and suffering bring us beneficial experiences.‎ C. We cannot always avoid facing pain and suffering.‎ D. We will not eventually be defeated by pain and suffering.‎ C The Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans has added an unconventional course to its curriculum. Medical students can now take cooking classes in addition to their usual training. This is intended to improve doctors’ nutritional knowledge and encourage them to use food to prevent or cure illnesses. ‎ According to a survey, most medical students in the US receive on average 20 hours - 15 -‎ ‎ of nutritional education throughout their entire education. This is an extremely low number, especially when one considers that diet is at the core(核心)of many modern Western diseases. From Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, reflux to obesity, allergies, depression and arthritis, eating the right foods can go a long way towards recovery, while significantly reducing dependency on medicinal drugs.‎ A big part of the problem is that nutritional guidelines in North America are vague, impractical, and difficult to apply. Everyone, from doctors to schoolchildren, learns about specific nutrients and percentages of recommended daily intakes, but that doesn’t translate easily to the grocery store. ‎ Training doctors to cook, however, takes nutritional education to a whole new level. Not only will doctors be able to explain which foods are best to eat, but they will also understand how to prepare them. Tulane medical students prepare for teaching future patients by offering free cooking classes to New Orleans residents—a mutually beneficial arrangement for everyone who shares that food. ‎ Fortunately, the model seems to be catching on. Already two other medical schools have licensed the curriculum and are adding it to their courses. Tulane also offers nutritional training for health—focused chefs from a nearby cooking school, which makes a lot of sense. After all, with the frequency with which North Americans eat out, we could all benefit from chefs who know how to balance nutrition with great taste. ‎ ‎28. What does the author want to tell us by listing the diseases in Paragraph 2?‎ A. Proper diets help treat them. B. Proper diets can replace drugs. ‎ C. They are difficult to treat. D. They are typical western diseases.‎ ‎29. What’s the author’s attitude towards the present nutritional guidelines in America?‎ A. Amazed. B. Stubborn. C. Dissatisfied. D. Interested.‎ ‎30. What can we know about the course from the last paragraph?‎ - 15 -‎ A. It will benefit chefs. B. It is becoming popular.‎ C. It has a long way to go. D. It encourages eating out. ‎ ‎31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A. Take a Cooking Course B. Learn to Be a Good Doctor ‎ C. Live Your Life to the Full D. Let Food Be Your Medicine D Do you know how it is when you see someone yawn and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, apparently it’s because we have mirror neurons (神经元) in our brains.‎ Put simply, the existence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains imitate it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.‎ Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the area which relate to our ability to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to (for example: “The hand took hold of the ball”), the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed (in this example, actually taking hold of a ball).‎ Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not fully functioning. However, it is not yet known exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders.‎ Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with ever more information concerning how humans behave and interact. Indeed, it may turn out to be the equivalent - 15 -‎ ‎ for neuroscience of what Einstein’s theory of relativity was for physics. And the next time you feel the urge to cough in the cinema when someone else does-well, perhaps you’ll understand why.‎ ‎32. Mirror neurons can explain .‎ A. why we cry when we are hurt B. why we cough when we suffer from a cold C. why we smile when we see someone else smile D. why we yawn when we see someone else stay up late ‎33. The underlined word “triggered” in the third paragraph probably means “ ”.‎ A. set off B. cut off C. built up D. broken up ‎34. We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons .‎ A. relate to human behavior and interaction B. control human physical actions and feelings C. result in bad behavior and social disorders D. determine our knowledge and language abilities ‎35. What is the passage mainly about?‎ A. Ways to find mirror neurons. B. Problems of mirror neurons.‎ C. Existence of mirror neurons. D. Functions of mirror neurons.‎ 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Rich and Famous Twenty years ago the most common ambition of American children was to be a teacher, followed by working in banking and finance, and then medicine. But today’s situation is quite different. 36 Instead they most commonly say they want to be a sports star, a pop star, or an actor—in other words, they hope to become a celebrity (名人).‎ According to experts, young people desire these jobs largely because of the wealth and the fame. 37 Let’s take athletes and singers as an example. Their careers - 15 -‎ ‎ are short-lived. Many athletes’ best time only lasts a few years and singers can have a very limited career. The field that was once the focus of their lives becomes something they have little or no involvement in. As a result, they’ll have a feeling of worthlessness and a lack of control. 38 The truth is quite simple: they have been so far removed from it for so long.‎ In spite of these disadvantages, there is greater ambition than ever among young people to achieve that status. They are not satisfied just making a living—they want to be rich and famous. Globally, more and more TV shows provide talent competitions where winners can achieve their goals in just a few weeks or months. 39 They unrealistically believe that this lifestyle is easily obtained and leads to great satisfaction.‎ While many people argue that there is nothing wrong with having such ambitions, others feel that this trend will finally lead to dissatisfaction as more and more people are unable to reach their goals. 40 That means they ignore the simple fact that great effort is needed before success. As a result, many people won’t realize their childhood dreams, which could have a negative effect on their happiness.‎ A. The younger generation don’t favor these professions any more.‎ B. In many ways this has been brought about by the celebrity culture.‎ C. Unfortunately, they do not always have a positive effect on people’s life.‎ D. Besides, it can be difficult for them to adapt back to a normal everyday life.‎ E. People no longer have a sense of satisfaction once their goals have been achieved.‎ F. This quick way of gaining wealth and fame creates a celebrity culture among people.‎ G. The reason is that they don’t realize it takes talent and hard work to be rich and famous.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A, B, C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ - 15 -‎ All Quiet in a Darkened Library After my mother died, my father, who was 75 at the time, began to regularly visit the local library in Epping.
