Vette first used voice commands and treats to teach the dogs how to turn a steering wheel and how to change gears (换挡). The dogs’ ride only accelerated up to 7.5 miles an hour, and trainers could stop the auto using a remote control. GOLDEN ZEBRA Kailua-Kona, Hawaii Zoe — the zebra’s markings are special. The animal has white and golden stripes. Zoe’s appearance resulted from a rare condition called amelanosis (黑素缺失症). So he flew away and returned with a small branch, slipping it through the fence to slide the stone toward him. He can tell the difference between stones and nuts. 23. What is the text mainly about? A. Amazing animals. B. Ways to help animals. C. Animals’ unique talents. D. Tips on training animals. B Whenever something looks interesting or beautiful, there is a natural desire of us to capture and preserve it — which means, in this day and age, that we are likely to reach for our phones to take a picture. Though this would seem to be a perfect solution, there are two big problems associated with taking pictures. Firstly, we are likely to be so busy taking pictures that we forget to look at the world whose beauty and interest encourage us to take a photograph in the first place. And secondly, because we feel the pictures are safely stored on our phones, we never get around to looking at them, so sure are we that we’ll get around to them one day. The first person to notice the problems was the English art critic, John Ruskin. He was a keen traveler who realized that most tourists make a poor job of noticing or remembering the beautiful things they see. He argued that humans have a natural tendency to respond to beauty and desire to have it, but there are better and worse expressions of this desire. At worst, we get into buying souvenirs or taking photographs. But, in Ruskin’s eyes, there’s just one thing we should do — attempting to draw the interesting things we see, regardless of whether we happen to have any talent for doing so. Ruskin said, “Drawing can teach us to see: to notice properly rather than stare absent-mindedly. In the process of recreating with our own hands what lies before our eyes, we naturally move from a position of observing beauty in a loose way to one where we acquire a deep understanding of its parts.” Ruskin deplored the blindness and hurry of modern tourists, especially those who prided themselves on traveling around the whole Europe in a week by train, “No changing of places at a hundred miles an hour will make us stronger, happier, or wiser. There was always more in the world than men could see, if they ever walked slowly; they will see it no better for going fast. The really precious things are thoughts and sights, not pace.” 24. According to Paragraph 2, when taking pictures, people tend to _______. A. forget to appreciate something attractive on the spot B. find it hard to learn skills of taking good pictures C. find a good way to keep things in their minds D. have a chance to meet the challenge of new technology 25. According to Ruskin, what should travelers do to best express their appreciation of and desire for something beautiful? A. To speak it out openly. B. To photograph it instantly. C. To buy it immediately. D. To paint it directly. 26. From the fourth paragraph, we can infer that Ruskin encourages us to be _______. A. considerate and determined B. active and adventurous C. creative and thoughtful D. sensitive and ambitious 27. The underlined word “deplored” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _______. A. appreciated B. criticized(批评) C. favored D. ignored C Although Paris is often considered the city of romance, close to a million adults who call it home are single. Many single people say that France’s capital is one of the most difficult places to meet people. The complaints(抱怨)of this lonely group have inspired a new phenomenon known as “supermarket dating”. At Galerie Lafayette Gourmet, singles can shop for more than just the items on their grocery list. They can look for someone who has blue eyes, brown hair, and is 1. 8 meters tall, or whatever may be on their romantic shopping list. At this Paris location, single people of all ages can schedule their shopping for Thursday nights between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. When they walk through the door, they pick up a purple basket to suggest that they are looking for love. They try to arrive early because the baskets disappear quickly, and then they have to wait in line for their turn to wander the store aisles (过道). With purple baskets in hand, shoppers can consider their romantic choices while they pick out their groceries. When they are ready to pay, they can go to the checkout line for singles who want to chat. Most of the people who look for love in the supermarket are skeptical of Internet dating. They know that it is easy to beautify one’s appearance or to lie about one’s age over the Internet. The supermarket, on the other hand, is considered a safe and casual environment in which to meet a potential match. In addition, what one finds in another’s grocery basket can say a thing or two about that person’s character or intentions. Buying pet food can be a man’s way of showing a potential match that he has a sensitive side. Women who fill their baskets with low-fat food show their healthy style of living. These days it’s possible to find much more than food at a grocery store. 28. What do many single people in Pairs complain about? A. The difficulty in meeting people. B. The idea of supermarket dating. C. The items on their grocery list. D. The inconvenience in shopping. 29. Which of the following can be inferred but is not clearly stated in the second paragraph? A. The dating supermarket is located in Paris. B. The dating supermarket is open only on Thursday evenings. C. People looking for love must get a basket of a particular colour. D. The dating supermarket has very good business. 30. How do love shoppers meet one another? A. They schedule their meeting in advance. B. They go through a special checkout. C. They pick out their groceries with great care. D. They dial the phone numbers on their shopping items. 31. Why do the people prefer the supermarket dating to Internet dating? A. The supermarket dating is more convenient. B. The supermarket dating is more fun. C. The supermarket dating is more trustworthy. D. The supermarket dating is more economical. D The media has negative effects on the physical and psychological well-being of society. People spending hours in front of a television or surfing the Internet experience eye problems. Lack of physical activity leads to obesity problems. The media influences public opinion and has an effect on the choices that people make. The media has led to a general opinion that thin is in and fat is out. This makes the overweight feel out of place. They are ready to starve themselves to lose weight, which has led to increasing eases of eating disorders. The media has, in its own way, changed people’s views about life. It is the interface (界面) through which millions look at the world outside. The media claims to describe the “today”, but not all types of media show the truth. With the intention of stressing their point or drawing greater attention from the public, the media exaggerates (夸大)things to a certain degree. All people are not able to tell that part. Most believe everything to be real, especially kids and teenagers. Media sources are so many in number and all of them so convincingly make their point that it is hard to distinguish between right and wrong. Thus while a certain amount of exposure to the media is essential for introducing ourselves to the world outside, too much exposure, uncontrolled access and belief without thought won’t lead us anywhere. They will only make the negative effect of the media more obvious. Media descriptions causes stereotypes(刻板的生活模式), affecting your mood. Advertisements carry messages influencing buyers’ psychology, or carry direct messages that bear a negative influence. It’s not possible to protect yourself completely from the effects of the media, even if you limit the exposure. And there are so many things you see around you, without choosing to watch them. The only way to protect yourself from them is to not allow them to influence you. Don’t take media descriptions at their word. Don’t believe in them without thinking. Think twice before following or falling for anything. 32. How does the media affect people’s health? A. It misleads people’s understanding of beauty. B. It disturbs people’s sleeping habits. C. It makes people addicted to junk food. D. It raises people’s awareness of exercise. 33. Which of the following is true ? A. Nobody can realize that some reports by the media are false. B. All people can realize that some reports by the media are false. C. Not everyone can realize that some reports by the media are false. D. Most people can realize that some reports by the media are false . 34. What message does the author convey in Paragraph 3? A. More haste, less speed B. Every coin has two sides. C. A watched pot never boils. D. Learn to walk before you run. 35. What does the author advise people to do in the last paragraph? A. Limit their exposure to the media. B. Don’t be too curious about things around. C. Develop their self-confidence and self-control. D. Use their own judgment properly in face of the media. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Some Ways to Have an Amazing Day Here are a few tips for making sure you can answer the pop quiz of life confidently: ●Be kind. 36 How often do you stop to talk to the people you come across every day? Do you know the names of the people at the bank, the grocery store, or the restaurant? One great way to get more out of your day is to fill it with people you know. The best way to know more people is to be kind to everyone you meet. Take a moment to learn a little about them. ● 37 I avoided saying “Stay Busy” because sometimes we can fill our day with meaningless activities and feel busy but then at the end of the day we look back and realize we accomplished nothing. A great way to stay productive is to look at the things you would like to accomplish today, this week, this month, etc. and then plan some time to work on each of them. ●Look for ways to serve. I truly believe that giving meaningful service to other people is the greatest key to our personal happiness. It maybe just a smile and a “hello”. 38 It maybe just a phone call to tell them “thank you for being a friend”. When we serve other people, we develop personal joy. ●Find a purpose. The happiest people have one or more big “life goals”. 39 When we have a big goal that we feel passionate about we become more excited to work on that goal everyday. 40 When you give yourself the pop quiz at the end of the day, you will be ready to say you did everything you could. A. Keep learning new things. B. Make the most of every day. C. Stay productive all the time. D. Try to do more in your everyday life. E. It may be helping them with their work. F. It has been said that you can measure a person by how they treat the people who can do no thing for them. G. It may be to run a marathon, write a book, start a business, develop a product or learn a new hobby or profession. The whispering of the audience had just become silence.
