Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal. After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym. In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or extreme overweight — among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing. 24. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola? A.They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently. B.They squeeze eating between the other daily activities. C.They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyles. D.They usually eat too much canned and frozen food. 25. This text is mainly the relationship between _________. A.Americans and the French B.life style and obesity C.children and adults D.fast food and overweight 26. The text is mainly developed __________. A.by contrast B.by space C.by process D.by classification 27. Where does this text probably come from? A.A TV interview B.A food advertisement C.A health report D.A book review C Why do human beings still risk their lives under ground and doing one of the dirtiest and most dangerous jobs in the world? It is an increasingly urgent question, given the recent mining accidents in Sago, W. Va and Huntington, Utah. A small group of engineers and robotics experts look forward to a day in the not-too-distant future when robots and other technology do most of the dangerous mining work. Robotic technology, in particular, holds much promise, McAteer says, especially when it comes to mapping mines and rescuing trapped miners --- the special operations of the mining industry. One of the first mining robots was developed five years ago at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. It was called Groundhog. It used lasers(激光器) to “see” in dark tunnels and map abandoned mines—some of the most dangerous work in the business. The latest design is called Cave Crawler. It’s a bit smaller than Groundhog, and even more advanced. It can take photos and videos and has more sensors that can detect the presence of dangerous gases. Incredibly, the robot has a real sense of logic. If it comes across an obstacle it gets momentarily confused. It has to think about what to do and where to go next. Sometimes it throws a fit just like a real person. The greatest problem, though, is cost. The money of the earliest research project was provided by the government, but that money had dried up, and it’s not clear where future money will come from. Partly for that reason, and partly because of advances in safety, mining is not nearly as dangerous as it was in the past. Since 1990, fatalities(致命性) have declined by 67% and injuries by 51% , according to the National Mining Association. Some experts predict that robots in mines will serve much of the same function that they do in the automotive industry. The robots do the most boring and dangerous jobs, but won’t get rid of the need for human workers. 28. The latest robot is more advanced than Groundhog, mainly because ____. A.it can map abandoned mines B.it can see in the dark tunnels C.it’s smaller than Groundhog D.it has a real sense of logic 29. The underlined phrase “throws a fit” in paragraph 4 probably means“______” A.gets angry B.gets sick C.becomes hungry D.becomes cheerful 30. We can infer from the last paragraph that _____ . A.robots in mines will serve much in the automotive industry B.there will be no need for human workers in mines C.the mine robots will have a very bright future D.robots in mines only do some simple jobs now 31. What can be the best title for the text? A.Mining Accidents in America B.Robots in Mines C.Cave crawler, the Latest Robot D.The Future of Robots D Will there be a time in our lives when cars don’t crash? When we can just sit back and relax and our cars will drive themselves. Auto technology experts say “yes”. And they say that some of those advances may happen quicker than you might think. They will require the users to input the name of the destination or the complete address of the location that they want to go and the cars’ artificial intelligence takes them there automatically without a driver. They will run on solar power in the daytime and ethanol fuel (乙醇燃料) at night. Toyota, BMW and Honda will completely control the trade of driverless car business together and will have the cheapest driverless cars. Fossil fuels will be completely incompatible (不相配的) with these cars. Driverless cars will not require a driver’s license of any grade to operate. Anyone with basic literacy and computer skills who are at least 16 years of age will be legally allowed to operate the vehicle with absolutely no restrictions. This would give the young users permission to operate the driverless cars on major highways as well as secondary roads without needing a separate classification. In addition to all this, drunken people will be able to use their own automobiles to return home because they are not “driving”, the vehicle. What’s more, car insurance will become obsolete because there will be no more automobile accidents after the year 2025. This is because the driverless car will have all safety methods in place by the car’s artificial intelligence to prevent automobile accidents. Global positioning systems will become mandatory (强制的) in all newly-manufactured cars after 2010, and will be the most important part in the driverless car. 32. Who will not be able to use driverless cars? A. Adults with basic literacy and computer skills. B. Adults who are drunk. C. Adults without computer skills. D. Adults without a driver’s license. 33. We can infer from the second paragraph that driverless cars . A. will need fewer fossil fuels B. will not need a human’s instructions C. will run on solar power only D. will be environmentally friendly 34. What will prevent the driverless car from crashing? A. Artificial intelligence. B. Global positioning systems. C. The people inside. D. Car insurance. 35. Which of the following may be the best title of the passage? A. Car safety. B. Driverless cars. C. The future cars. D. New technology in cars. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 (将选项涂在答题卡相应的71-75题) As a child grows up,you may wonder how you can teach him to become a respectful adult. 36 A child who learns to respect not only learns to receive respect from others in kind, but also learn to respect himself. ●Show him respect.
