A.InStyle B.Self C.Wired D.Discover B A South Korean man and the 21 ducklings he has been raising as his children ever since they hatched have been breaking the internet with their amazing bond. A video that recently went viral in the western world shows the cute birds following their “mother” on a mountain hike and listening to his every command. The middle-aged man, whose name is not revealed in the video, has been taking care of his 21 ducklings ever since they were eggs, making sure the incubation( 孵 化 ) period went smoothly, and even helping the tiny birds break through their shell when it came time to hatch. He was the first thing they laid eyes on in this world, and he has remained the most important figure in their lives since. Ducklings naturally follow their mother around, and since the man was the one who acted as their mother, these birds follow him everywhere, even up a mountain. To them it’s only natural, but the middle-aged man considers it training and conditioning for the time when he finally releases them into the wild. He would love to raise them all as pets, but knows that wouldn’t be ideal for him or the birds, so he’s making sure that they are strong enough to survive in the wild. The video shows the ducks following the middle-aged man as he hikes up a mountain outside Seoul, stopping whenever he does and refusing to follow anyone else, even if they give the same “let’s go” command their human mother does. Unless they hear his voice and see him moving, they don’t budge. It’s actually quite remarkable. I mean, it’s one thing to see dogs acting like this, but ducklings? That’s something else. While it’s not clear what the man does for a living, I’m pretty sure he has a lot of experience with ducks, as at one point he reveals a certificate for “father of ducklings” dated 2005. 4.What can we learn from the video? A.The ducklings just broke through their shells. B.The man accidentally saved some ducklings. C.The ducklings just obeyed the man naturally. D.The man took pride in his ducklings. 5.What’s the man’s purpose of raising the ducklings? A.To make a living by performing. B.To film a video to attract attention. C.To free them into the wild one day. D.To make a contribution to a bird reserve. 6.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “budge” in Paragraph 4? A.Attack. B.Move. C.End. D.Struggle. 7.What can be the best title for the text? A.“Father” and “mother” of cute pets B.Man raises ducklings as his “children” C.Ducklings also regarded as good pets D.Amazing bond between man and animals C In an ideal world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time-consuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year. Europe, on the whole, has the world’s most restrictive laws on animal experiments. Even so, its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive data than America. Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis (猜想)being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals’ lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments. Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer. Europe’s new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted. 8.What is the main idea of this passage? A.The success of animal experiments should be ensured. B.A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced. C.Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals. D.Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other. 9.Which of the following statements is TRUE about animals used in the lab? A.America uses only about 1.1 million lab animals per year. B.Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all. C.Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does. D.Japan has limited data on the number of lab animals used each year. 10.Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments? A.Statistical studies. B.Computer models. C.DNA planted in animals. D.Tissue from dead animals. 11.What usually happens to unsuccessful animal experiments? A.They are not revealed to the public. B.They are made into teaching materials. C.They are collected for future publication. D.They are not removed from the research topic list. D Alibaba Cloud and the Hangzhou city government announced the launch of ET City Brain 2.0, a cloud—powered and Al-driven urban traffic-management system that aims to increase the city’s efficiency. After over two years of testing in Alibaba’s home base, ET City Brain has become the new infrastructure (基础设施) for Hangzhou, with a total coverage of 420 square kilometers in area, including over 1,300 traffic lights. Over 200 traffic officers are connected via mobile phones, enabling them to receive real-time alerts on any traffic-related emergencies. In version 2.0, the system will optimize the city’s firefighting abilities by providing key information to firefighters, such as water pressure, the number and position of fire hydrants (消防栓) in a given area, the location of gas pipes and other details they need to know. The information is instant, making the entire firefighting process faster, safer and more accurate. City Brain gives meaning to data. By using AI and advanced algorithms (计算程序), City Brain is able to analyze a large amount of data and turn them into useful information in real-time speed. As a result of City Brain’s ability to predict traffic flow, detect accidents and provide instant feedback, Hangzhou has dropped from 5th to the 57th on the list of China’s most congested cities. Hangzhou is probably the only city that can tell you how many cars are on the street at any given time. In the case of medical emergencies, City Brain is able to change traffic lights, so emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks can head to the scene without interruption, accelerating their arrival time by 49%. Dr. Wang Jian, the head of Alibaba’s Technology Steering Committee who invented the term “City Brain”, said the system is designed to empower a city to act quickly and directly. It is more than just about traffic management. It’s really about how to make city more livable at a time of shrinking natural resources around the globe. “It is a matter of sustainability, while using as little natural resources as possible,” Wang said, “This is just the beginning.” 12.What benefit will ET City Brain bring? A.Lower crime rates. B.Efficient government. C.Less traffic congestion. D.Improved medical care. 13.Which of the following functions of the city Brain is NOT mentioned in the text? A.Predicting traffic flow. B.Giving quick feedback. C.Changing traffic lights. D.Handling traffic accidents. 14.Which of the following best explains “optimize” in paragraph 3? A.Better. B.Practise. C.Operate. D.Emphasize. 15.What can we conclude from the last paragraph? A.ET City Brain 2.0 is a mature version. B.Alibaba targets environmentally-friendly development. C.The government is devoted to improving the system. D.The system can solve the problem of lack of resources. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What Teenagers Can Do to Earn More Respect As teenagers continue to grow and develop into young adults, the transition(过渡) into adulthood has begun.
