The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.‎ It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness, Richard Burton, Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras(交响乐团). It became a fixed event every August and now attracts 400,000 people yearly.‎ At the same time, the “Fringe” appeared as a challenge(挑战) to the official festival. Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947, in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.‎ Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theatre by little -- known writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh.‎ Today the “Fringe”, once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theatre, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959,with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.‎ A paid administrator(行政人员) was first employed only in 1971, and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries. More than 1.25 million tickets were sold. 24. They thought they were also famous. D. They wanted to take part in the festival.‎ ‎26. What does the “Fringe” mean in the third paragraph?‎ ‎ A. unpopular groups B. non-official groups ‎ C. foreign groups D. local groups ‎27. But it can be more exciting if there are dolphins swimming around and jumping out of the sea too. For many people, it would be a wonderful dream to swim with these lovely animals! However, this may not be good for dolphins. They may get hurt ‎ because of human interaction (互动).‎ Dolphins are active and usually look for food at night. In the day, they like to rest in shallow bays(浅湾). Many people think the dolphins are awake during the day as they swim. But when they sleep they rest half of their brain and keep the other half awake to breathe, so they may be sleeping even when they’re swimming in the water.‎ From 2010 to 2013, spinner dolphins (飞旋海豚) of Hawaii’s Big Island were exposed to human activities more than 82 percent of the time, according to Julian Tyne, a researcher at Australia’s Murdoch University.‎ The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says disturbing the animals in their near-shore habitat could force them to swim to less favorable places, putting them at risk of attack by sharks and other animals. ‎ Besides, when people are around, dolphins become more active. Thus, they can’t get enough sleep. “Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long term health and the health of the dolphin population,” Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service told the Associated Press.‎ As a result, the NOAA wants to make rules to help protect the dolphins. For example, the agency (机构) may ban swimming with the Hawaii spinner dolphins. Or they may stop people from swimming in shallow bays when the dolphins are resting. Tour operators must also be taught to watch for signs to know when the dolphins are in their resting state. ‎ ‎28. Which of the following about dolphins is NOT true?     A. They spend most of their time sleeping at night.     B. They like to stay in shallow bays during the day.     C. They keep half of their brain awake while sleeping.     D. They may be sleeping even when they’re swimming. ‎ ‎29. When dolphins are disturbed in their near-shore habitat, they _____.     A. would swim to a crowded place   B. could move closer to sharks     C. could become less active             D. could likely sleep longer ‎ ‎ 30. Which activity is against the rules?     A. Swimming with the Hawaii spinner dolphins.     B. Swimming in bays where the dolphins live.     C. Making signs that show the dolphins’ resting state.     D. Making signs that show where the dolphins are. 31. What does the article mainly talk about? ‎ ‎ A. What habits dolphins have.           B. What spinner dolphins are.‎ ‎ C. How the animals live in the sea.       D. How to protect dolphins near the shore.‎ D The secret to happiness is keeping busy, research has found. Keeping the mind occupied with tasks-no matter how meaningless-keeps off negative emotions(情绪),the study found.‎ However, the bad news is that humans are seemingly born to be lazy in order to save energy, according to Professor Christopher Hsee, a behavioral scientist at Chicago‎ ‎University.‎ In a study, 98 students were asked to complete two surveys. After they had completed the first, they were made to wait 15 minutes to receive the next one. They were given a choice of either handing in the first survey nearby or at a more distant location they had to walk to. Whichever option they chose, they received a chocolate bar. It turned out that approximately two-thirds (68 students) chose the lazy option. Those who had taken the walk reported feeling happier than those who had stayed put.‎ Prof. Hsee concluded that keeping busy helped keep people happy. He said the findings, reported in the journal Psychological Science, had policy benefits,“Governments may increase the happiness of idle(闲散的) citizens by having them build bridges that are actually useless,”he proposed.‎ At the individual level, he advised, “Get up and do something. Anything. Even if there really is no point to what you are doing, you will feel better for it.” He added, Incidentally, thinking deeply or engaging in self-reflection counts as keeping busy, too. “You do not need to be running around. You just need to be engaged, either physically or mentally.”‎ ‎32. Why can keeping busy make people happy?  ‎ ‎ A. It can help people get rid of laziness. ‎ ‎ B. It can make people sleep better.‎ ‎ C. It can help get rid of negative emotions.  ‎ ‎ D. It can give people a sense of achievement.‎ ‎33. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? ‎ ‎ A. The finding may be helpful for politics.   ‎ ‎ B. The officials have taken Prof. Hsee’ advice.‎ ‎ C. In the study half students handed in the first survey nearby.‎ ‎ D. Governments can increase citizens’ happiness by building bridges.‎ ‎34. What can we infer from the passage? ‎ ‎ A. Only by keeping working all the time can you gain happiness.‎ ‎ B. Prof. Hsee’s finding was published in Psychological Science.‎ ‎ C. Keeping busy can add to the possibility of being happy.‎ ‎ D. Everybody is born to be lazy. 35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?     ‎ ‎ A. To explain what happiness is  ‎ ‎ B. To advise people not to sit around. ‎ ‎ C. To advise people to do what they like to. ‎ ‎  D. To show people how to take life correctly.‎ 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分, 满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ As we know, everyone can make mistakes, but don’t worry about it. In my opinion, this is the most reasonable place we’ve seen so far.‎ W: I agree, although there are a couple of problems with it.‎ M: Sure, it’s not perfect. The walls need to be painted. We can move our own fridge and washing machine in here, but the air conditioner should be repaired as soon as possible. (14) ‎ W: Are you sure you don’t like the other place we looked at? I’ve always dreamed of living in an apartment overlooking the ocean.‎ M: Of course I like it, but we need to be smart with our money. Don’t forget we plan to have kids in five years. Maybe in ten years we will have enough money to buy our own apartment, anywhere we like.‎ W: Like one of those apartments in the mountains where all the famous people live? You can see the whole city from there!‎ M: Perhaps. Look! This is our best choice. Besides, this place is close to all the malls, grocery stores, and subway stations. (15)‎ W: OK, let’s do it. Just remember to tell the landlord we can’t move in at the beginning of next month. Tell him we can do it around the 15th. (16)‎ M: I got it. ‎ W: Just think about it, by the end of next month, this place will feel like home!‎ Text 10‎ If you haven’t heard of Babbel, you are missing out on a great language learning experience. It has been about 11 years since the company was founded. It currently offers lessons in 14 languages. (17) Babbel is a paid service, but you can try out several lessons of each language for free. (18) Once you try it, though, you will want to pay for full access! You can use the website or practice on your phone with their app. The app is very easy to use. It is very challenging to complete even one level, though. You must sometimes go back to previous lessons and review them to improve your score. The app also has prizes to make learning more fun, like a video game. (19) For instance, you can earn extra points to unlock hidden levels. The program combines writing, reading, listening, and speaking to give you complete practice in a foreign language. Babbel has a modern look. The pictures and examples are interesting. The best part is that you only need to spend about 15 minutes a day on Babbel to start learning a new language! (20) ‎
