‎ A Christmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies. ‎ The Grinch (2000)‎ This is a Christmas mustwatch and one of Jim Carrey's best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.‎ Love Actually (2003)‎ While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots, so I recommend watching a translated version. However, the heartwarming elements of the film make it worth watching.‎ Home Alone (1990)‎ This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While other family members are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch an 8yearold boy beat two grown men.‎ Miracle on 34th Street (1994)‎ You can't have Christmas in an Englishspeaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The storyline may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age.‎ ‎1.Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?‎ A.The Grinch.‎ B.Home Alone.‎ C.Love Actually.‎ D.Miracle on 34th Street.‎ ‎2.What is Home Alone mainly about?‎ A.An unsuccessful family vacation.‎ B.A boy protecting his home by himself.‎ C.A terrible suffering of a little boy. ‎ D.An 8yearold boy's practical jokes.‎ ‎3.Why is Miracle on 34th Street so popular?‎ A.Owing to its moving plot.‎ B.Because of its funny story.‎ C.Due to its childish storyline.‎ D.Because of its famous actors and actresses.‎ B Artificial intelligence(AI) technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. It may help them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never before possible.‎ Rishi Rawat teaches AI at the University of Southern California's(USC) Clinical Science Center in Los Angeles. He is part of a team of scientists who are researching how AI and machine learning can more easily recognize cancerous growths in the breast.‎ Rawat provides information about cancerous cells to a computer. He says this data helps the machine learn. He says, “You can put the data into them and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recognition that's important for making decisions.”‎ David Agus, another USC researcher, believes that machines are not going to take the place of doctors. He says, “Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can't recognize.”‎ Once a confirmed cancerous growth is removed, doctors still have to treat the patient to reduce the risk of cancer returning. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer. Currently, researchers take a thin piece of tissue, put it on a small piece of glass and add color to it to better see the cells.‎ That process could take days or even longer. Scientists say artificial intelligence can do something better than just count cells. Through machine learning, it can recognize complex patterns, or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. The ‎ hope is that machines will soon be able to make a quick identification of cancer that is free of human mistakes.‎ Agus says that with the computing power the process could be done for almost no cost. He adds that having a large amount of information about patients is important for a machine to effectively do its job in medicine.‎ USC researchers are now only studying breast cancer. But doctors predict artificial intelligence will one day make a difference in all forms of cancer.‎ ‎4.What are Rawat and his team devoted to?‎ A.Helping doctors cure cancers.‎ B.Comparing treatments for cancer.‎ C.Doing research on AI's recognition of cancer.‎ D.Studying the replacement of doctors with AI.‎ ‎5.Which is the process of treating cancer according to Paragraph 5?‎ a.take a thin piece of tissue b.rid the confirmed cancerous growth c.add color to the tissue in order to better see the cells d.place the tissue on a small piece of glass e.continue to treat the patient for fear of cancer returning A.adebc B.becda C.adbce D.beadc ‎6.What can we infer about AI technology in treating cancer?‎ A.Cancer will definitely be cured in the future.‎ B.Breast cancer is more easily recognized than other cancers.‎ C.Effective cancer cell identification is what AI is greater at than doctors.‎ D.Doctors can perform better in treating cancer if they master AI technology.‎ ‎7.Which one can be the best title of the text? ‎ A.The Cancer Cure Has a Long Way to Go ‎ B.Ways to Cure Breast Cancer Will Be Found Soon ‎ C.Artificial Intelligence May Make Better Doctors D.Scientists Are Doing Some Research on Breast Cancer ‎ C The first hamburger created by scientists in a lab has been recently presented in London. The burger, which cost over 300,000 dollars to grow, comes from stem cells(干细胞) that were taken out of the shoulder of a cow.‎ It took food scientists three months to raise 20,000 tiny pieces of meat to create one single hamburger. Stem cells were reproduced and, over a period of time, created their own muscles. Mark Post, who is a scientist at a Dutch university and responsible for the project, has been researching this method for a long time. He says that the job was a difficult one because it was important to keep the cells healthy and not let any pollution get into them during the whole process.‎ Food experts who tasted the new hamburger said that it felt like meat but it was without fat, which normally changes the taste. Biting into it felt like a real burger, but it wasn't as tasty because salt and pepper were missing.‎ The experiment showed that creating food in a lab is a possible solution (解决办法) for the world's food problems. Large quantities of meat could one day be made without raising millions of animals around the world. Those who welcome such a method say that we cannot produce enough meat in the future and such a new method could be an alternative. But it will be a long time before consumers get to taste such a new hamburger at McDonald's or elsewhere. It would have to be made much cheaper and the time it takes to grow such a hamburger would have to be greatly reduced. Scientists are hoping to get food companies to spend money on this new technology. But many question marks remain. Taste, which was put aside in the first prototype(原型), must be improved to give a consumer the taste of real meat.‎ Meat grown by people could be a way of producing enough food for our growing population without killing animals. In addition, reducing livestock (家畜) reduces greenhouse gases. Animals produce about double the amount that we humans create. By the middle of the century the human population is expected to rise to 9 billion and the demand for food, especially meat, will rise.‎ ‎8.The first hamburger comes from stem cells that were taken out of ________.‎ A.the leg of a cow B.the shoulder of a cow C.the neck of a cow D.the tail of a cow ‎9.Which of the following didn't make the food experts satisfied about the hamburger?‎ A.Its taste. B.Its color.‎ C.Its shape. D.Its nutrition.‎ ‎10.What used to trouble Mark Post most in the lab was that ________.‎ A.it was very difficult to reproduce stem cells from a cow B.the stem cells must be kept clean and healthy all the time C.it would take him a long time to collect enough stem cells D.the meat in the hamburger didn't have any fat in it ‎11.According to the passage, what will happen if Mark's method is widely used?‎ A.There will be fewer diseases among animals.‎ B.Animals can grow much faster and bigger than ever.‎ C.People will be able to eat meat with different tastes.‎ D.Greenhouse gases from animals will be greatly reduced.‎ ‎ D ‎ We've been covering standing desks for a long time now because experts agree that sitting all day is killing us. We want to be productive while also keeping our bodies healthy. Over the years, there have been several solutions to this from fixed standing desks to adjustable ones, portable desks to ones that change into shelves.‎ However, the most hightech and elegant solution has to be this new smart desk called the Stir Kinetic Desk. The desk learns your daily behavior and moves between a sitting and standing height regularly throughout the day to keep you moving without interrupting your work flow.‎ You can program specific sitting and standing intervals or let the desk set the schedule. If you tend to sit while returning emails in the morning, but always want to stand during that afternoon conference call, the desk will learn those regular habits and adjust the schedule to fit them. Of course, the desk can always be manually lowered or raised by using the touch screen on the lower left corner of the desk.‎ When switching positions, the desk gently dips and rises to let you know that a change is coming up. If you're not ready to switch positions at that time, you can tap the touch screen to stay sitting or standing for a while longer.‎ The builtin touch screen also keeps track of your daily sitting and standing times and tells you how many calories you've burned. You can even set goals for how long or how often you want to stand. The desk also works with fitness devices like the Fitbit to track your movements.‎ All of that smart technology doesn't come cheap though. The M1 desk, which is the everyday model, runs a steep $2,990, while the more executive model with added features, the F1, goes for $4,190.‎ While expensive, it's worth that thinking of how much time we spend at our desks. Much like a good mattress (床垫), a good desk that works with you is worth the investment. Hopefully in a few years these smart, integrated desks will be more common and less expensive.‎ ‎12.The Stir Kinetic Desk has been designed to ________.‎ A.help users with their work B.keep users moving all the time C.get users to exercise while working D.remind users of their working schedule ‎13.Which is the feature of the touch screen of the desk?‎ A.It can tell users when to change positions.‎ B.It can track users' changes of positions.‎ C.It can keep users in a fixed position.‎ D.It can detect users' health condition.‎ ‎14.Which of the following can best describe the desk?‎ A.Productive but challenging.‎ B.Convenient but unaffordable.‎ C.Complex and impractical.‎ D.Multifunctional and intelligent.‎ ‎15.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?‎ A.To spend money on such a desk is rewarding.‎ B.We should get such a desk as soon as possible.‎ C.It won't be long before the desk is widely used.‎ D.Desks play a very important role in our daily life.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容。从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。‎ It was the 2015 “super storm” in New South Wales that restored my faith in people.‎ During a break in the weather, I stupidly decided to drive into town to buy some groceries.
