I have heard that there is an opening for a researcher in the Marketing Department, and my supervisor(主管), Marla Petrowski, suggested that I contact you about applying for it. I have worked at Grover for three years now as an office assistant in the Accounting Department. I previously worked for a year at a small marketing firm called R-J Associates. That is the only marketing job experience I have, but I have a degree in marketing, which I completed last month. Now I would like to get a position in my field. Through my years working at Grover, I have become quite familiar with the way this company works, and I feel that I would have a great deal to offer Grover’s Marketing Department. Sincerely, Sylvia Krim Dear Ms. Krim, Thank you for your letter expressing interest in applying for the position in the Marketing Department. I have spoken with Ms. Petrowski, who highly recommends you for the job. I have also shown your material to our head researcher, and we both agree that you would be a good asset(有价值的人) to our department. Unfortunately, the position you are interested in is not an entry-level job. We generally require at least twice the amount of marketing job experience that you have, as a minimum, for that type of position. Although you appear to have a good reference from your former employer, we feel that you are not yet qualified for the job. However, we will have an opening for a marketing assistant, possibly as soon as September. I will let you know when that position becomes available in case you might be interested in applying for it. I hope you will. In the meantime, please accept my best wishes for your continued success. Sincerely, David Mendez Director of Marketing 21. Who recommends Ms. Krim for the job? A. The director of marketing. B. A university professor. C. The head researcher. D. Her supervisor. 22. How many years of experience are required for the job Ms. Krim wants? A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four. 23. What will Mr. Mendez do? A. Hire Ms. Krim right away. B. Check Ms. Krim’s material. C. Speak with Ms. Krim’s former employer. D. Inform Ms. Krim when a position is available. B Safety is a huge concern whenever I run with my earphones in. But I need music to run. Otherwise all I hear is the sound of my own breathing. So I’ve found a compromise: I run with only one earphone in. The music sounds off. It’s an imperfect solution. An updated pair of headphones, called AfterShokz, aim to do better. AfterShokz bills itself as using bone conducting technology to conduct music from the front of the ear, delivering sound through your cheekbone and inner ear. This keeps your eardrum(鼓膜) free to hear everything else. “Earbuds(耳塞式耳机) are typically designed to block out all sound, which is fine when you are inside. But when you’re outside, you need all your senses. It would be like sending you out cycling with a blindfold on,” says Rod Annet, managing director of AfterShokz. Here’s where AfterShokz comes in. The headphones hook over the back of your head with the main “bud” resting high up against your cheek. This keeps your ear free to delight in other sounds. So do they work? In a word, yes. During a 45-minute jog, they didn’t bounce or shift. I heard far more of my environment than I normally do: a nearby bike there; a runner passing me again to my left; and so forth. What about the downsides? If you’re a huge fan of high-quality sound, you might find the headphones a bit tinny. One friend expressed concerns about missing the ability to get lost in the music as you might be distracted by other noises, although I personally didn’t find that an issue. Yet those are all minor details. For me, probably the biggest problem is the price. Ranging between £49.96 to £83.29, AfterShokz headphones aren’t exactly cheap. With all that considered, would I recommend them? Yes. AfterShokz headphones are quite useful. While out jogging, they were light, painless, and easy to use. They made me feel safer. 24. What is special about AfterShokz headphones? A. They are a good choice for inside use. B. They allow users to hear other sounds. C. They can make music sound more beautiful. D. They can deliver sound through your eardrum. 25. What does the author’s friend think of AfterShokz headphones? A. They prevent users getting lost. B. They deliver high-quality sound. C. They often move while users are running. D. They fail to allow users to enjoy the music. 26. The author thinks AfterShokz headphones ______. A. are too expensive. B. seem quite useless. C. make users feel pain. D. are too complex to use. 27. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To express worries. B. To introduce a product. C. To share a personal story. D. To complain about a product. C People took bets on when Le Ho’s business, Capital City Waste Services(CCWS), would fail, but she has proved the doubters wrong by turning the waste management business into a multi- million dollar empire. Le Ho had a poor start to life in Australia. When she was 18 days old, her family arrived in Australia from Vietnam on a fishing boat. At the age of 21, Ho started her first business called Honey Bee, a bridal store. In six years she grew that to six stores, but the market for Internet shopping changed things greatly. Therefore, she wanted to find some business that, whatever the economy, would be there. It turned out the answer was waste management. Ho first came across CCWS when she helped to run the business for a friend who was a director and had to go overseas. In 2010, Ho decided to buy it for $50,000 although the business was losing about $20,000 a month. To cut down costs, Ho took on all the roles in the business from sales to driving a truck. She started the day with a waste collection run and then changed clothes to go to meetings. Evenings were spent reading books and sending emails. She worked 18 hours a day for the first 12 months. Ho’s hard work paid off after her business doubled in the first12 months. Over the next 12 months the income doubled again. Ho picked the right industry with IBISWorld (an Australian research company) analysis valuing solid waste collection services at $6.2 billion for 2015-2016 and predicting annual growth of 3.8 percent in the future. However, Ho faced discrimination when starting out in an industry controlled by men. But it only inspired her. She regarded it as a driving force for her to get in the truck at 6 am. She said that any business or job that men can do, women can do too. And she proved it with her success. 28. When Le Ho was in her twenties, she ______. A. took a boat trip to Vietnam B. owned several bridal stores C. got interested in online shopping D. moved to Australia with her parents 29. Le Ho took over CCWS mainly because ______. A. her own business had failed B. her friend advised her to do so C. she wanted to make a bet with others D. she believed the waste industry is more stable 30. According to the IBISWorld analysis, we can infer that Le Ho is ______. A. competent B. ambitious C. far-sighted D. strong-willed 31. How did Le Ho deal with the discrimination against her? A. She simply ignored it. B. She chose to keep silent. C. She used it to encourage herself. D. She expressed her anger publicly. D Twenty years ago, the idea that technology would be at the center of business was still part of the future. Computers were just starting to land on desks as young companies like Microsoft Corp and Apple Inc said their products would change the way we work. Back then, Michael Malone co-authored a book called “The Virtual Corporation,” describing the future as adaptive, driven by technology and global in reach. Now, in the age of constant communication and social networking, Malone has written “The Future Arrived Yesterday, the Rise of the Protean(变化多端的) Corporation and What It Means for You” as a kind of update. While business has changed in fast ways, with computers and smart phones always attached to the Internet. Malone argues that companies have not changed fast enough. Employees have changed greatly from who they were 20 years ago thanks to new technology, but today’s companies “no longer reflect who we are now.” Companies, he argues, need to change greatly to keep ahead. Malone points to IBM, Apple, and Cisco Systems, all of whom have changed their core business to meet future needs, as examples of what he calls protean corporations --- those that can change their forms, appearances or behaviors. Unlike traditional companies made up of long-term employees, a protean corporation has many layers. A small group of long-term employees at the center understand and guide strategy and culture. A middle ring, consisting of salaried workers with benefits, manage day-to-day operations. And an outer ring, or cloud, consists of freelancers, contractors, and suppliers. Extreme examples are Facebook, Wikipedia and MySpace --- each with a solid, small core of administrators who set standards and keep technical and cultural quality. The rest of the business is operated by a cloud of users who add content and only sometimes participate in the company’s operations. The cloud will be made up of employees “whose understanding of the company’s business and culture can be anything from complete to indifferent, and whose contact with you may last for decades or just a matter of minutes.” While the core of any protean business should be vital, they are, in the end, people of the past. According to Malone, “it’s the rest of us who represent the future and change.” 32. According to the passage, twenty years ago, ______. A. computers had become very popular B. technology was at the center of business C. employees hadn’t changed fast enough to meet the future D. some young companies hoped to reform people’s way of work 33. We can infer from the passage that in a protean corporation ______. A. salaried workers focus on the technical quality B. important decisions are made by long-term employees C. employees of the outer ring have good understanding of its business D. all the employees should participate in its operation more or less 34. According to the passage, which of the following is most different from traditional companies? A. Microsoft Crop. B. Cisco Systems. C. Wikipedia. D. Apple Inc. 35. In Malone’s opinion, ______ stand for the future of protean corporations. A. both administrators and users B. both the middle and the outer rings C. a small group of long-term employees D. Malone and other short-term employees 第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 The writer’s block Whatever you have to write, the idea of a blank page --- or screen --- can be very discouraging. Here are a few easy tips to help you overcome your writer’s block. 1. Think before your write. Before you actually start, think about what you want to say, why you want to say it and who you are going to say it to. The most important question to ask is: what response do I want to get? __36__ It may be a memo(备忘录) at work. In that case, your main aim is that your reader will be able to get the most important information quickly. 2. Keep it short and to the point. Use short, simple sentences, written for maximum effect. Make sure that everything you say is relevant to your main aim or message. If you can’t, it’s probably because you’re not realy sure of exactly what you want to say. __37__ 3. Avoid repetition. You may feel that a point needs stressing, and that you therefore want to repeat it just to make sure it sinks in. Don’t. It’s much better to make sure you expressed yourself clearly and simply the first time round. __38__ 4. Choose your style carefully. This takes us back to the first point. __39__ If you know them personally, then you’ll also know how best to write to them. Make sure your style reflects both your relationship with your readers and your attitude to what you’re writing. If you’re writing to an anonymous(不知姓名的) audience, keep your style neutral(中立的). Remember that first impressions are vital. __40__ And of course, the wrong choice can do quite the opposite! A. Remember your readers! B. Try reading your text aloud to yourself. C. It’ll make your text much easier to process. D. And if you don’t know, your readers definitely. E. The answer to that obviously depends on what you’re writing. F. The right choice of words and tone can help you get off to a great start. G. If something really needs to be said again, at least find a different way to do so. Most of us have experienced a change of image at some time in our lives.
