B In the United States, it is important to be on time, or punctual, for an appointment, a class, a meeting, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered the difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian(巴西的) university. The two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10 A.M. and end at 12. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10:30 A.M. Two students came after 11 A.M. Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized(道歉)for their lateness. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students’ behavior. The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation: at a lunch with a friend and in a university class, respectively. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react. If they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student defined lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian student felt the friend was late after 33 minutes. In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour.In contrast, in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at the scheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12:00;many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late. 24.The word ‘punctual’ most probably means________. A. leaving soon after class B. coming early C. arriving a few minutes late D. being on time 25.Why did the professor study the Brazilian students’ behavior? A. He felt puzzled at the students’ being late. B.He felt angry at the students' rudeness. C.He wanted to make the students come on time later. D.He wanted to collect data for one of his studies. 26.It can be inferred from the professor’s study of lateness in the informal situation that __________. A.American students will become impatient if their friend is five minutes late B.neither Brazilian nor American students like being late in social gatherings C.being late in one culture may not be considered so rude in another culture D.Brazilian students will not come thirty-three minutes after the agreed time 27.What is the main idea of this passage? A.It is important to be on time for class in the United States. B.The importance of being on time differs among cultures. C.People learn the importance of time only from their own culture. D.Students being late for class should explain the reason to their teacher. C Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki has become the first female artist in the Arab world to be nominated (提名)for an Academy Award ,or Oscar. We can’ t help but acknowledge that there is a fear of refugees in general around the world and there are these walls we are building, and this fear that keeps growing," Labaki said. The new train will run 100-kilometer trips and can travel up to 140 kilometers an hour. A French railroad company called Alstom built the two trains. Team in Germany and France cooperated on the project, supported by the German government. The new train model ,called the Coradia iLint, signals the beginning of efforts in Germany and other nations to move away from pollution-producing diesel(柴油) trains. The Coradia iLint is designed to run on non-electrified train lines with low levels of noise. It uses a process that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electrical power. If the system produces more energy than the train needs at that time, it can store the extra energy in batteries. The only emissions (排放物) are water and steam. A single tank of hydrogen can run a Coradia iLint train for about 1,000kilometers. This is very similar to the distance a diesel-powered train can run on with a single tank. Hydrogen-powered trains cost more than diesel trains to build. But Alstom officials say the operating costs are much lower. The company plans to provide another 14 Coradia iLint trains to Lower Saxony by 2021. The head of railroad operations in the area, Carmen Schwabl, praised replacing diesel trains with hydrogen. She said the move was an important first step in using clean-burning technologies to reach climate protection goals. Officials say the area's many wind turbines (涡轮机)will produce part of the energy to create the hydrogen to power the trains. Alstom says several other European countries have also expressed interest in developing hydrogen train systems. France has already said it wants its first hydrogen train to be operating by 2022. 32. Why did Germany build the new trains? A. To replace diesel trains. B. To carry more passengers. C. To make traveling much easier. D. To develop friendship with France. 33. What is one advantage of the Coradia iLint? A. It runs without making any noise. B. It doesn’ t use electrical power. C. It costs much less to run. D. It is cheaper to make it. 34. It can be concluded that hydrogen trains________ A. are widely used B. are environmentally friendly C. can stop air pollution D. can produce water and oxygen 35. What might be the best title for the text? A. Saving Natural Resources B. Efforts to Reduce Emissions C. World’s First Hydrogen Trains D. A New Way to Make Electricity 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What Is Emotional Eating? Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of satisfying hunger. 36 Have you ever finished a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downed cookie after cookie while preparing for a big test? But when done a lot — especially without realizing it — emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well-being. Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings. 37 One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it’s caused by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they’re stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day or the celebration of a holiday feast. Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. 38 Emotional eating patterns can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done. 39 It’s not easy to “unlearn” patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what’s going on. We’re all emotional eaters to a degree. But for some people emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain or other problems. The trouble with emotional eating is that once the pleasure of eating is gone, the feelings that cause it remain. 40 That’s why it helps to know the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Next time you reach for a snack, wait and think about which type of hunger is driving it. A. Believe it or not, we’ve all been there. B. If a crying boy gets some cookies, he may link cookies with comfort. C. One study found that people who eat food like pizza become happy afterwards. D. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you like. E. Understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it. F. Boys seem to prefer hot, homemade comfort meals, while girls go for chocolate and ice cream. G. More often, though, it’s the countless little daily stresses (压力) that cause someone to seek comfort in food. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、G和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 I had driven home to celebrate my 38th birthday with my mother.
