Many may not expect to hear the words of the old Chinese saying in these modern times—with parents wealthier and better educated than they have ever been-but experts say they still ring true. Today, it seems, Chinese parents are more likely to send their children to pre-college military academies in the United States in the hope that some tough love will pave the way to success. "Good education doesn't mean letting your child enjoy privileges, especially our boys," said Song Wenming, an entrepreneur (企业家)in Jinhua, East China's Zhejiang province." They should be raised in tough conditions to know what to fight for in the future." In August, Song sent his 17-year-old son to Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in Pennsylvania. And he is far from alone, even though it takes a lot of money - around $48,000 per year —to send a child to a strict military school. Statistics shows that an increasing number of Chinese students have been registering with such academies. A few years ago, there were no Chinese students at Valley Forge. Today, there are 28."All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from wealthy families, some of them were spoiled," said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school. Song's only son, Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult. Now, three months late r,he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism, no matter how unreasonable. "The training is hard but I know it is good for self-development of individuals," said Song Siyu .'The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character, they are not personal." But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy this year have transferred to other schools. But for those who stick with it, there is a reward for all the hard work. 26. From the second paragraph, we can know the old Chinese saying _____. A. is out of date in modern times. But do you know it can also make you look good? People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found . Scientists at St Andrews University found eating them slightly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers' skin. They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks. Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look more healthy and an extra 3.3 portions could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others. Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids (类胡萝卜素),which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer. But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange ,it was not known a small increase was perceptible(被觉察)to others - and was seen as appealing. A camera measured changes to the skin's redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident in three weeks. Using light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin. There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄红素)-which gives tomatoes and red peppers their red colour - and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach. Skin colour is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多元酚),found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface. 31. What do we know from the research? A. If you take in a little more fruit and vegetables, you will obviously look more attractive in three weeks. B. The researchers took the pictures of the 35 people in the research at different stages. Among hundreds of carotenoids, lycopene is thought to have the most dramatic effect on the skin. 34. We can infer from the passage that _____ A. A couple of years ago I came face to face with my mother at my grandmother's funeral. I told her about the changes in my life and I told her that I forgave her. I was able to tell her that I loved her. I am still separated from my oldest daughter, but she knows that I love her and that I made some wrong choices. I am now raising three of my own children and my sister's child . When I look into the eyes of my sister's, baby—who is now the same age as my oldest child was when I left her—I can see myself at that age. I know that Jesus forgives, as I am allowed to be the mother I never knew. Take a look at your life. There are things we dream of doing one day, there are things we wish we could forget. But every one of us has the opportunity to experience perfect grace through a personal relationship with God through his son, Jesus Christ. You can receive Christ right now by faith through prayer. Praying is simply talking to God . God knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as he is with the attitude of your heart. Jesus Christ will come into your life, just as he promised . And two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead . The two frogs didn't listen to the others and tried to jump out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop. Finally, one to the frogs heard what the other frogs were saying and gave up, so he died. The other frog went on jumping as hard as he could . Once again, the other frogs cried at him and told him to stop and just allow himself to die. He jumped even harder and finally made himself out. When he got out, the other frogs said, "Didn't you hear us?" the frog explained to them that something was wrong with his hearing. He thought they were encouraging him the whole time. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift him or her up and help them make it through the day. Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words-anyone can speak bad words that rob another of the spirit to go on in difficult times. The traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Mid-autumn festival, are set as official holidays, providing people with more chances to travel together with their family and friends. Besides, the rapid development of road construction and the increasing number of people owning private cars make self-drive tourism boom, Compared with traditional tourism, traveling by self-driving enables people to get closer to nature and give them more freedom in the tour. Since people have to drive all the way during the tour, they have to pay special attention to the safety problem and avoid driving when exhausted. After two frogs fell into a deep pit, one died because of companions' discouraging words while the other that mistook them for encouraging ones got out. So words have powerful effects on people's attitude towards life. We use words every day but not all of us realize their powerful influence. In a stressful situation, a student will study hard, trying to achieve his goal because of others' words, encouraging him that he will have a bright future because he was born talented. On the contrary, if he is told that the situation is so bad that he will never overcome it, he may really give up and become a failure totally. I have a friend called Mary, who had a traffic accident when she was in. junior' high school. Her waist was hurt so badly that the doctor told her that she would probably have to rely on a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She was so depressed at the news that she refused to receive any treatment that may help her recover. Though the chances for her recovery are little, her mother decided to mil a lie in order to cheer her up. She told Mary that the doctor had mistaken her for another patient, saying that she would recover soon if treated properly. Hearing that, Mary became cooperative in receiving treatment and with her strong will, she finally recovered, which amazed the doctors and nurses. It was the power of words that actually help her stand up and walk again. These stories tell us we should turn a deaf ear to the negative words because they will destroy our dream and hope. We should listen to the positive words that give us encouragement and keep telling ourselves that "I can if I try hard." In the meantime, give our positive words to people around us because they will give us theirs in turn.查看更多
