Her job was to tutor them with their schoolwork.‎ One day, this teacher received a routine call requesting that she visit a particular child. She was told by the teacher on the other end of the line. “We’re studying nouns and adverbs in Class now. I’d be grateful if you could help him with his homework.”‎ It wasn’t until the visiting teacher got outside the boy’s room that she realized it was located in the hospital’s burn unit. No one had prepared her for that. When she walked into the room, she found the young boy, horribly burned, was obviously in great pain. The teacher felt awkward and didn’t know what to say, but she had gone too far to walk out. Finally, she was able to stammer out, “I…I’m… the special visiting hospital teacher, and your teacher sent me to help you with your nouns and adverbs.” Afterward, she thought it was not one of her more successful tutoring sessions.‎ The next morning when she returned, a nurse stopped her, “What did you do to that boy?” Before she could finish her apologies, the nurse interrupted her by saying, “You don’t understand. We’ve been worried about him, but ever since you were here yesterday his whole attitude has ‎ changed. He’s responding to treatment…”‎ In fact, the boy had completely given up hope and felt he was going to die until he saw that special teacher. Everything had changed with an insight gained by a simple realization. With happy tears in his eyes, the little boy said, “They wouldn’t send a special teacher to work on nouns and adverbs with a dying boy, now, would they?”‎ ‎24. Why did the teacher feel awkward after entering the room?‎ A. She walked into the wrong room.‎ B. She was too eager to be successful.‎ C. She had no idea how the boy was suffering.‎ D. She was not well prepared for her lesson.‎ ‎25. What does the underlined word “stammer” in paragraph 3 mean?‎ A. To speak with a fear. B. To speak with a pause.‎ C. To speak with a concern. D. To speak with a gesture.‎ ‎26. What can we infer from the teacher’s action of apologizing?‎ A. She got scared by the hospital nurse.‎ B. She was a person of modest personality.‎ C. She thought she made the boy uncomfortable.‎ D. She realized she got the usage of a noun wrong.‎ ‎27. What helped the boy regain hope?‎ A. He felt the learning pressure from the special teacher.‎ B. He believed that the teacher was expert at teaching grammar.‎ C. He was aware that everyone was trying their best to care for him.‎ D. He realized that he was not in so bad a situation as he had assumed.‎ C Next time you bear John Denver singing "Take Me Home, Country Roads” ---or hear the group Spank perform it in the short filmed advertisement for the video game Fallout 76, which has become a hit over the past year or so since it came out — keep in mind that it wasn't anywhere in ‎ West Virginia that inspired the great hit, but rather a road in Montgomery County.‎ Songwriter Bill Danoff, in a 1997 article he wrote for The Washington Post in memory of Denver, who'd just died, said he had begun writing the song while driving to a family reunion along Clopper Road, near Gaithersburg. He and his future wife, Taffy Nivert, completed the song in December 1970 with Denver's help. "Back then," Danoff wrote, Clopper Road “was still a country road,"‎ The three first sang the song the following night at Washington D.C. 's The Cellar Door, where Denver was headlining. "When we first sang the song together, "Danoff wrote, “it seemed as though the audience would never stop applauding. Next show, the same thing. We knew we had a hit."‎ In "(Take Me Home," his 1994 autobiography(自传))Denver wrote,” In the small hours of the morning, sometime between Christmas and New Year's Eve, in their basement apartment in Washington, D, C., we wrote 'Take Me Home, Country Roads.” It became my first Number One record. "‎ No word on why Maryland lost out to West Virginia in the lyrics. Perhaps "Maryland” just doesn't sound like the countryside as its western neighbor. More likely, the three syllables(音节)that make up our state's name just don't fit; the meter the songwriters had worked out.‎ Some sources suggest Denver considered using "Massachusetts" instead of "West Virginia". Good thing he didn't, or crazed Red Sox fans might be singing it between matches. A song to Massachusetts also would never have been named a state song of West Virginia, a status "Take Me Home, Country Roads” has enjoyed since 2014.‎ ‎28. Which of the following injected Bill Danoff the inspiration to write "Take Me Home, ‎ Country Roads” ?‎ A. Maryland. B. West Virginia. ‎ C. Massachusetts. D. Washington D. C.‎ ‎29. What was the audience's reaction when they first heard "Take Me Home, Country Roads"?‎ A. People all didn't fancy its lyrics. B. Most people assumed that it was noisy.‎ C. They made bad comments on the singers. D. They were all fascinated by it.‎ ‎30. What does Para, 5 mainly convey?‎ A. Why Maryland was unused. B. Why the song was so popular.‎ C. More achievements of the singers. D. A new way to understand the song.‎ ‎31. What can be learned about "Take Me Home, Country Roads” from the last paragraph?‎ A. It is popular among Red Sox fans.‎ B. It is a state song of West Virginia.‎ C. It earned Denver a national award in 2014.‎ D. It was played most frequently in Massachusetts.‎ D At the World Economic Forum last month, President Trump drew claps when he announced the United States would respond to the forum's proposal to plant one trillion(万亿) trees to fight climate change. The trillion-tree idea won wide attention last summer after a study published in the journal Science concluded that planting so many trees was “the most effective climate change solution to date”.‎ If only it were true. But it isn't. Planting trees would slow down the planet's warming, but the only thing that will save us and future generations from paying a huge price in dollars, lives and damage to nature is rapid and considerable reductions in carbon release from fossil fuels, to net zero by 2050.‎ Focusing on trees as the big solution to climate change is a dangerous diversion(偏离). Worse still, it takes attention away from those responsible for the carbon release that are pushing us toward disaster. For example, in the Netherlands, you can pay Shell an additional 1 euro cent for each liter of regular gasoline you put in your tank, to plant trees to balance the carbon release from your driving. That's clearly no more than disaster slightly delayed. The only way to stop this planet from overheating is through political, economic, technological and social solutions that end the use of fossil fuels.‎ There is no way that planting trees, even across a global area the size of the United States, can absorb the huge amounts of fossil carbon released from industrial societies. Trees do take up carbon from the atmosphere as they grow. But this uptake merely replaces carbon lost when forests were cleared in the first place, usually long ago. Regrowing forests where they once grew can undo some damage done in the past, but even a trillion trees can't store enough carbon to head off dramatic climate changes this century.‎ In a sharp counter argument to last summer's Paper in Science, Justin Gillis wrote in the same journal in October that the study's findings were inconsistent with the dynamics of the global carbon cycle. He warned that “the claim that global tree restoration(复原) is our most effective ‎ climate solution is simply scientifically incorrect and dangerously misleading”.‎ ‎32. What do we know about the trillion-tree idea?‎ A. It was published in a journal. ‎ B. It was proposed last summer.‎ C. It was put forward by Trump. ‎ D. It drew lots of public attention.‎ ‎33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?‎ A. A drawback of the tree planting strategy.‎ B. An example of balancing carbon release.‎ C. An anecdote of making a purchase at Shell.‎ D. A responsibility for politicians and economists.‎ ‎34. What was Justin Gillis's attitude towards global tree restoration?‎ ‎ A. Indifferent. B. Opposed. C. Hesitant. D. Supportive.‎ ‎35. What is the best title for the text?‎ A. Contradictory Ideas on Tree Planting. B. A Trillion Trees Come to the Rescue.‎ C. Planting Trees Won't Save the World. D. The Best Solution to Climate Change.‎ 第二节(共5小题;毎小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Who can forget their first day of school? (1)‎ M: No, I want us to go as a group.‎ Text 2‎ W: I heard on the news that we’re finally going to be getting some rain in the next few days.‎ M: That’s good news. This has been one of the driest months on record, (2) so I’m sure the trees really need it.‎ Text 3‎ W: What a wonderful wedding that was! It will be a big task to sweep up all that litter.‎ M: The rules of the wedding hall say throwing colored paper is banned. (3) Throwing rice is OK. And even bits of torn-up newspaper are allowed.‎ W: That’s crazy!‎ Text 4‎ W: On the front page of yesterday’s newspaper, it says that you have come to an agreement with the Canadian government. Can you tell us more about that?‎ M: Absolutely. We have agreed to continue working together to improve economic relations between our two countries. (4)‎ Text 5‎ W: Can I have something to drink? My throat is so dry from our workout earlier, and all I had today was about a liter.‎ M: You need to drink some water then. I drink two liters a day usually, and an extra one when I exercise. (5)‎ Text 6‎ M: Let’s visit the steam railway tomorrow. It’s so exciting. (6)‎ W: You’re like a little boy who wants to see those old trains pumping out smoke and steam.‎ M: I love the power and the size of them — but most of all I just love the steam. It is great to see them in action and we can ride on one as well.‎ W: Yes. I like them, too. It is like going back to the old days when all trains were black. (7)‎ M: Well, tomorrow there will be green ones and red ones, too.‎ Text 7‎ W: I understand that you’re looking to start a show within the next two years. Is this true? (8)‎ M: Yes. Many hosts start out on the radio, but now the technology is better and you can even make a show on the Internet. ‎ M: I want it to be the show that people watch while they’re eating dinner. (10)‎ Text 8 (第11题为总结题)‎ M: Can you pick up the name cards for the conference?‎ W: Sure, but I need to stop by the hospital first and drop off the card and gift we got for Andy. (12)‎ M: Of course! I can’t believe I forgot about that.‎ W: I hope I bought him the right gift.‎ M: I’m sure it’s fine.‎ W: I hope so, because last year I wasn’t sure if he liked the birthday gift I got him. I bought him a Lego Star Wars set, because I overheard him talk about it with Mary. But, when he opened it, he asked me if I thought he was a child. (13)‎ M: I remember that! That was funny! He was joking but you looked so lost. (13) We just laughed at your reaction.‎ W: OK, I figured he was joking, but I was not sure. (13)‎ M: No, no. He appreciated it. How long will he be in hospital, do you know?‎ W: A few more days. He should be able to get back to work soon.‎ M: OK, great. Send him my best!‎ W: Will do!‎ Text 9‎ M: Let’s go for a swim today.‎ W: How about going to the lake? (14)‎ M: It’s too hot inland. The temperature is supposed to reach 105 degrees today. (14)‎ W: Then where should we go?‎ M: I think the coast is the best place.‎ W: But the beaches will be too crowded today, won’t they? It’s Saturday, so everyone will have the same idea as we do.‎ M: I know a place that isn’t as popular. That beach is rather small and rocky, but it will be suitable for swimming.‎ W: Sounds great! I’ll pack our bags. (15) Can you fix something for lunch? We can eat on the way.‎ M: Sure. Cheese sandwiches are easy to eat on the road. We can buy cold soda at the gas station. (16)‎ W: I’d rather take iced coffee.‎ M: You’ll have to make it, then. I never know how you like it.‎ W: All right. Do you want me to pack a pair of pants for you?‎ M: No, I’ll just wear my swimsuit. I can dry off in the sun before we leave the beach.‎ W: I’ll take extra towels, just in case. (17)‎ M: That’s good. We can lie on them in the sun. (17)‎ W: And if there aren’t a lot of trees, we can hang up the towels for some shade.‎ M: You could do that, but not for me.‎ Text 10‎ In today’s class, we will do a role-playing exercise to better understand what life was like during the Industrial Revolution in Europe in the late 18th and early 19th century. (18) All the information you need is in the instruction sheet in front of you. First, I will need to separate the class into three groups. Each group represents a different class during that time period. The first group will represent the upper class and play the role of owners of businesses in the city. The second group will represent the middle to lower class and play the role of business managers. (19) The third group will represent and play the role of the working class. This last group will consist of different types of working-class families, such as single-parent families and families who lost their parents. In addition to those groups, I will need two students to represent the bank and two to represent security officers. (20)‎ Each group will have a specific set of goals they must reach by the end of class while ‎ trying to follow city rules, like paying taxes and keeping the city at peace. Any questions?‎
