I wasn't sure what I wanted to study in higher education, so I decided to take a gap year to figure that out. ‎ One of my biggest passions has always been Africa and I have always wanted to do some kind of volunteering. However,I was afraid that, especially when it comes to volunteering in research. I wouldn't be able to go into much depth with the research I would be doing. I needn't have worried about this internship(实习期)though. It has been perfect for me because not only am I doing the same activities as all the other volunteers but I also get to do my own research in addition to those activities. ‎ The internship program I am following focuses on big predators(食肉动物). I have decided to focus on cheetahs(猎豹)for my individual project, collecting data on the two cheetahs that live in Rietspruit, one of the reserves that African Impact does research in. With both cheetahs having only been reintroduced into the area this year, there is still a lot of data that can ‎ be collected on the pair. Large predator reintroduction is a common strategy used to return these animals to their historic range. The problem is that the success rates of these reintroductions are very low, mainly because of lack in research done on how different factors influence the reintroduction. ‎ Both cheetahs are wearing a GPS-collar from which I can download a lot of information including where the cheetah has been, what the weather was like and how far the cheetah travelled. Having organized and categorized the information, I have been able to create some very interesting graphs.‎ Even though it is quite difficult since I've never done any research like this, I really enjoy all the challenges and problems I have had to face and solve. And I'm glad that I can do something to help wildlife. ‎ ‎24.Why did the author take a gap year after high school? ‎ A.He was asked to do some voluntary work. B.He didn't think he was quite ready yet. C.He wanted to do some traveling in Africa. D.He didn't really like receiving higher education. 25.What did the author realize after joining the internship program? A.It was what he had expected. B.It separated him from others. C.It was too challenging for him. D.It was really suitable for him. 26.The author's work mainly involves________. A.collecting information about two cheetahs B.observing two cheetahs in the wild secretly C.walking around Rietspruit to serve scientists D.collecting data on some different big predators 27.What is the best title for the text? A.My experience on the predator research internship B.My experience of rescuing wildlife in Africa C.My experience of receiving higher ‎ education D.My experience of protecting cheetahs ‎ C Trash is the talk of Shanghai. Citizens and businesses are required to sort their waste into separate bins. The task is onerous: Shanghai produces more than 9 million tons of trash every year and it lacks even a basic recycling system.‎ As far back as 2000, the Chinese government foresaw this problem and chose eight cities, including Shanghai, to pilot(试行)trash recycling programs. They all failed completely. Not only did the cities lack the equipment and facilities to recycle, but people were given no education about why it was so important. This ignorance continues. A 2018 survey of 3,600 citizens from major Chinese cities found that nearly three-quarters could not identify how to properly sort their trash for recycling.‎ Regardless, the government is trying again. In Shanghai, citizens are required to sort their trash into four separate categories: food waste, recyclables, dangerous wastes (such as batteries and light bulbs) and"residual wastes” (which include everything from floor sweepings to clay product). Citizens can only throw away waste during certain hours, ensuring that neighbors will see who is and who isn't sorting properly. They must throw food waste into public bins without using bags, so everyone can also see what they're throwing away. Fines of up to 200 yuan, roughly $30, await those who don't sort.‎ At the same time, Shanghai has spent weeks using every possible propaganda(宣传)tool, from social media to local and even national newspapers, to explain how and why citizens should recycle. On Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like social media service, the subject has repeatedly trended. Younger Chinese seem to have favorable opinions of the program, though they fear it will be time-consuming.‎ ‎ It's a lesson to other developing countries that the first step in creating a modern waste management system is to educate the public and develop a sense that recycling is a collective(集体的)responsibility. If the world is going to clean up its trash piles, Shanghai's new program could well be the model.‎ ‎28.What does the underlined word"onerous"in Paragraph I probably mean?‎ A.Tough. B.Basic. C.Pleasant. D.Important.‎ ‎29.Why did China's trash sorting program in 2000 fail?‎ A.The propaganda was not effective.‎ B.There were no strict regulations at all.‎ C.People had little awareness of recycling.‎ D.The cities lacked a standard system.‎ ‎30.Which of the following disagrees with the trash sorting regulation?‎ A.Throwing away trash at the allowed time.‎ B.Limiting the amount of trash people drop.‎ C.Sorting trash into four separate categories.‎ D.Putting trash into public bins without using bags.‎ ‎31.What's the main idea of the text?‎ A.Shanghai has made a big step in trash recycling.‎ B.Shanghai has many recycling problems to solve.‎ C.It is not an easy thing to promote trash recycling.‎ D.It is urgent for the world to launch trash recycling.‎ D If you've spent any time observing seals at the zoo or in the wild, you may have seen the mammals swimming, walking, clapping and even "barking "at one another. Now, scientists in Scotland have proved that with some vocal training, the talented animals also can imitate the human language.‎ Vincent Janik, a biology professor at Scotland's University of St.Andrews, and Ph. D. student Amanda Stansbury began working with three seals when they were just a few weeks old. They first taught the young seals, named Zola, Janice and Gandalf, natural seal vocalizations (发音) using previously recorded sounds. Each time one of the mammals copied a sound correctly, it was given a treat.‎ Once Zola,Janice and Gandalf had mastered the natural sounds, the researchers began changing them slightly with the help of a computer. As before, the young mammals were also given a treat when they matched the new sounds. Eventually, Stansbury strung some of the notes(音调) together into familiar tunes.‎ Over the 12-month training period, Janice and Gandalf learned how to imitate all possible ‎ combinations of the five vowel sounds. Zola, meanwhile, turned out to be a musical talent, singing popular tunes like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star ".‎ Though the seals' ability to imitate has impressed experts worldwide, Stansbury isn't satisfied. The researcher believes she'd have been able to teach the animals additional language skills, had she not been required to release them into the wild after 12 months. "We haven't fully studied how complex of tunes these guys would be able to learn. "she said.‎ The researchers believe the study will throw light on how mammals learn sounds. Janik says, "Finding other mammals that use their vocal tract (声道)to change sounds informs us how vocal skills are influenced by genetics and learning and can finally help develop new methods to study speech disorders. "We wonder if Janice, Gandalf and Zola are passing on their newly-learned language skills to other members of their species!‎ ‎32. What method was used over the whole course of the study?‎ A. Playing previously recorded sounds.‎ B. Training each seal based on its ability.‎ C. Combining different vowel sounds for the seals.‎ D. Rewarding the seals for the good performance.‎ ‎33. How did the three seals behave at last?‎ A. Gandalf produced only five vowel sounds.‎ B. Janice could combine vowel sounds freely.‎ C. Zola could sing various songs like humans.‎ D. Zola was able to imitate some human tunes.‎ ‎34. Why did the researchers put an end to their study?‎ A. They got stuck halfway.‎ B. They lacked enough support.‎ C. They had to set the seals free.‎ D. They achieved their desired goal.‎ ‎35. What can we conclude about the study from Vincent Janik's words? ‎ A. It is of significance.‎ B. It needs to continue. ‎ C. It went well as expected.‎ D. It may not be so reliable.‎ 第二节:(本节共5小题,每小题2分,共10分,本题涂在答题卡上)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选车能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Whether you volunteer at an animal shelter or in a hospital, volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to bring good into the world and support your community.
