Brussels: Chocolate Nearly half the chocolate consumed in the world is eaten in Europe, and Belgium—with average consumption of 14.99 pounds per person a year—certainly covers its fair share. While Brussels, the country’s capital, is home to hundreds of chocolate makers, what makes a visit necessary is the rich heritage of traditional chocolate makers. Budapest: Paprika(红辣椒) The job of preparing Hungarian paprika was once considered too dangerous for mothers to do. A woman who touched her children upon returning from work risked burning them, so only the elderly and unmarried were allowed the delicate task of separating the skin from the flesh. But by the early 20th century, sweeter varieties and a machine turned paprika into a common feature of all Hungarian cuisine. Lisbon: Tiles(瓷砖) Is there a bluer country than Portugal? The blue sky and Atlantic Ocean embrace the land. The blue moods of Fado, the dark folk music, form the national soundtrack. And all across Portugal, the typically blue designs of azulejo—ceramic tiles—are spread across churches, castles, palaces, university halls, parks. The result is a beautiful land of Christian saints, Portuguese kings, historical glories, aristocrats(贵族) at leisure, seascapes and so on. Madrid: Guitars Walking into one of Madrid’s storied guitar makers’ workshops can feel like stepping into the past. Curly wood shavings, from the palest pine to ebony, fall onto the floor as artisans (工匠) turn some humble wood into works of art. It’s painstaking work—all done by hand—with classical guitar models and the methods of making them change little the last century. 21.What does the job of preparing Hungarian paprika suggest? A. The popularity of Hungarian peppers. B. The difficulty of processing peppers. C. The unique tradition in Budapest. D. The hot level of Hungarian peppers. 22.Which city can be a splendid setting for a film? A. Brussels. B. Budapest. C. Lisbon. D. Madrid. 23.What’s the similarity of the four items? A. They’re all treasures of a city. B. They all date back several centuries. C. Their production processes are all painstaking. D. They all win popularity in most European countries. B Night vision technology has been around for a while, but it’s only really used by professionals due to its big size. But what if night vision was something you could fit into a pair of eye glasses? You could keep a pair in your bag if you were going to be walking home alone in the dark. All this and more could be possible thanks to a new development by researchers. “We can make the entire design super-thin,” said Zhaohui Zhong, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Michigan. “It can be fitted into a contact lens (隐形眼镜).” The most effective night vision technology works by catching the infrared (红外线的) part of the light. Zhong suggests that the technology could therefore be used for more than just night vision. It could help doctors monitor blood flow without having to move a patient or take them to any scans, or be used by art historians to examine layers of paint underneath the surface. It’s not quite X-ray vision but it’s pretty close. Previous attempts to use graphene (石墨烯) in this way have suffered from the material’s insensitivity towards parts of the light. The team from Michigan’s breakthrough was to create a sandwich of layers, with a barrier placed between two slices of graphene and an electrical current sent through the bottom part. When the infrared light hits the top layer of graphene it drives away electrons as normal, a process that is then amplified(放大) by the electrical current. And you get night vision. “Our work pioneered a new way to detect light,” said Zhong. “You will have these cameras on your smartphone, on your vehicle to drive at night, for security, and so on.” 24.What’s special about the latest night vision technology? A. It’s more convenient to use. B. It has the most fashionable design. C. It has been used in the field of medicine. D. It’s popular with people who wear glasses. 25.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. The light. B. The infrared. C. The technology. D. The X-ray. 26.Paragraph 3 is mainly about________. A. what the night vision technology is B. how the night vision technology works C. the origin of the night vision technology D. the use of the night vision technology in daily life 27.According to Zhaohui Zhong, the night vision technology________. A. makes night vision available for all people B. will be improved for security reasons C. will be as common as a smartphone D. may have a potential market C I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me. I was told it would mean a great deal to him, so I agreed. During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩).When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams. I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about going for his dreams. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and one day he wanted to lift weights with me. When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Some day when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.” Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. It read: Dear Dick, My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more, but I still smile as much as I can. I told you someday that I would win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. However, I know I’m a champion. Thank you for loving me. A. An unforgettable visit B.A special friend C.A real champion D.A famous athlete D Every four years, mentally disabled athletes come together to take part in the Special Olympics. Just like the regular Olympic Games, the events are surrounded by grand ceremony and competition is fierce, but there is also a strong sense of unity and friendship. Each athlete has had to train for many years and overcome fear and hardships to reach the games. For many of the Special Olympic athletes, simply taking part in the games is a victory. It often seems as if the Olympic spirit is stronger at the Special Olympics than at the regular one: winning is not about being the first one across the finish line or scoring the most goals, but it is about being the best you can be. Athletes at the Special Olympics are fighters in more than one way. Living with a mental disability is perhaps the most difficult challenge a human being can face in life. The disability makes everyday life difficult and society often fails to treat the mentally disabled with dignity and respect. For a long time, mental disability was considered shameful and the mentally disabled received little treatment or encouragement. Fortunately, we have now realized that there is much that can be done to help. The Special Olympics is one example of how society can improve the quality of life for all its citizens. By preparing for and participating in the Special Olympics, mentally disabled children and adults can develop their ability to move, improve their health and gain greater self-confidence. The Special Olympics is also a good way to make friends. The first Special Olympics were held in Chicago in 1968.One thousand participants from Canada and the United States competed in three events. Since then, the Special Olympics have grown. At the 2003 Special Olympics in Ireland, more than 6,500 athletes from over 150 countries took part and there were 21 different sports. Interest in the Special Olympics has spread across the world and cities are now competing for the honor to host the event. In 2007, the Special Olympics were successfully held in Shanghai. Chinese athletes, their friends, parents and audience were proud of the great event. 32.The underlined sentence “Athletes at the Special Olympics are fighters in more than one way.” means “Athletes at the Special Olympics ________ .” A. fight for getting more than one prize B. fight against more than disability C. have to fight with many other athletes in different ways D. have to fight against their disability, other athletes, and even other difficulties 33.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A 42. B 43. D 44. C 45. B 46. A 47. C 48. C 49. D 50. A 51. B 52. C 53. D 54. C 55. B 56. D 57. A 58. A 59. B 60. a few days和a few months为并列关系,且此句是否定句,因此要用or连接。 该句结构为It takes+时间+to do sth.。 名词patience(耐心)的形容词形式是patient(有耐心的)。 74.表示“过去经常做某事”用“used to do sth.”。 76.分析句子结构可知,“…would become a household name”是定语从句,修饰先行词product。 Good afternoon, everyone! It’s a great honor to have the opportunity to be with you today. The topic of my speech is“Thank you, mum.” Like many of you, my life has been blessed with a mother who is a source of unconditional love. My mum is an ordinary housewife. I highly appreciate her kind consideration, especially during the stressful days. In these days, she keeps me company, cooks me tasty dinners, and makes my room as clean as possible. On top of that, whenever I get upset, she listens to me and comforts me until I have cheered up. I’m fortunate to have such a caring mother. Listen, time is clacking. The big exam is there for me and you, every son and daughter, to realize dreams. I appeal to all of us here to work hard for our dear mums. I have another message for everyone here: Express your love in return. Either a small talk with mum or a cup of tea for her will shine her through. Thank you for listening.
