However, Britain is quite an expensive place to study and live in. Tuition fees have now reached £ 9,250 a year and students also face some of the highest living costs in the world.‎ Fortunately, there are a number of countries where universities offer degree programs entirely in English, along with the chance to learn the local language while you live there. Here are three of the options broken down in detail. ‎ University of Amsterdam The Dutch capital is not a cheap city to live in, but standard tuition fees of £ 1,800 a year make it significantly cheaper than a British degree. There are 14 bachelor’s degrees on offer that are taught in English, including Political Science, Economics & Business Economics and Actuarial Science. Nearly all Dutch people speak English, making it an easy country to get by in. ‎ Tianjin University Moving to China is not for the faint hearted. Undergraduate degree courses at Tianjin last ‎ four years. Living costs are only around £ 400 a month and tuition fees are £ 2,300 a year. Flights will cost £ 3,600 over the four years. The total cost, at £ 28,800, is still around half that of a three-year degree in Britain. Tianjin is one of the world’s latest cities and is only a half-hour train ride from Beijing. Three undergraduate programs are offered in English: Chemical Engineering, Environment & Energy and Pharmaceutical Science.‎ University of Milan The University of Milan’s fees range from £ 140 to £3,650 a year. The one bachelor’s degree offered entirely in English-Political Science-is a three-year course. While living costs in Milan are high, the significantly lower fees make it a cheaper option than a British university.‎ ‎21. Where can you major in Political Science?‎ A. London and Tianjin. B. Amsterdam and London.‎ C. Amsterdam and Milan. D. Tianjin and Milan.‎ ‎22. What is probably the total cost of a three-year degree in Britain?‎ A. £ 14,400 B. £ 27,750 C. £ 28,800 D. £ 57,600‎ ‎23. What is the purpose of the text?‎ A. To encourage people to study abroad. B. To introduce some affordable universities.‎ C. To advertise some degree programs. D. To compare tuition fees and living costs.‎ B Times are a little tough at our house right now. Neither of us makes a lot of money, but years of experience have taught us how to walk between the raindrops and make it from one month to the next with a fair amount of grace. I cook a lot at home, more when we’re facing lean times. When I know that I have to keep us fed on not much money, I fall back on my grandmother’s recipes. She taught me to cook.‎ When I was a kid, my twin brother and I spent long summer weeks and Christmas vacations with my mother’s parents in the mountains of North Carolina. Rather than go hunting with my grandfather on frozen mornings, I found myself more and more in the kitchen with my grandmother, watching her making a lemon cheese pie with her soft hands.‎ My great-grandmother died when my grandmother was 11 years old. As the eldest daughter, she was expected to take on all of the housework while attending school. Throughout the Great Depression, she learned how to make a little food go a long way. Vegetables were cheap, so she cooked a lot of them, mostly only using small amounts of meat for seasoning. Roast beef was a twice-a-month luxury, but there was nothing she couldn’t do with a chicken, every part of it. Nothing went to waste.‎ Now I understand that her food was sacred. I feel connected to my grandmother and to hundreds of years of family when I’m in my kitchen making country food. In the delicious smells is a long tale of victory over hard times, of conquering starvation—of not just surviving, but finding joy and pleasure in every meal of every day.‎ From grandmother I learned to take real satisfaction in feeding people, My grandmother would beam with pleasure over a heavily laden table and say, “Do you know what this would cost at the restaurant?” I never knew what restaurant in particular she had in mind, but I knew that the question was totally not fair, because no restaurant anywhere can cook like a grandmother. But now, thanks to her guidance and years of practice, I can.‎ ‎24. According to the passage, the author cooks a lot at home because .‎ A. she wants to try out her grandmother’s recipes B. she and her husband are quite particular about food C. she enjoys cooking at home D. she and her husband are embarrassed financially ‎25. According to the passage, the author’s grandmother .‎ A. learned to cook throughout the Great Depression B. preferred chicken to beef C. was careful in budgeting D. was careful in cooking vegetables ‎26. What does the underlined word “sacred” mean in paragraph 4?‎ A. frightening B. tasty C. delightful D. holy ‎27. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?‎ A. Cook like My Grandmother B. My Grandmother’s Sacred Food C. My Grandmother’s Recipe D. Joy and Pleasure in Cooking ‎ C Do cell phones cause cancer? No one knows for sure. Mobile phones have only been widely used for around 20 years, with the very first ones introduced just over 30 years ago. It’s too soon to tell just how harmful cell phones are.‎ In February 2011, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association recorded changes in brain glucose metabolism (葡萄糖代谢) during cell phone use. The study became the first to prove that cell phone use changes brain activity by monitoring 47 healthy volunteers seated and on the phone for 50 minutes. The volunteers’ brains were monitored by special scanners to measure glucose metabolism.‎ Then in May 2011, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) added radiation from cell phones to its list of substances that possibly cause cancer in humans. The IARC’S research found that most cell phone use did not lead to more risk of glioma, a dangerous type of brain cancer, or meningioma, a more common, but typically not harmful cancer. However, the study did find enough evidence that using cell phones for long periods of time on the same side of the head could mean an increased risk of glioma.‎ In a contrasting report released in July 2011, a British Institute of Cancer Research study found little evidence of cancer risk in 10 to 15 years of use. The study showed that there have been no increases in brain tumors (肿瘤) in several countries over the last 30 years since cell phones were introduced or even in the last 20 years since their use became more widespread.‎ With no long-term research available yet, limiting exposure to cell phone radiation by texting more and talking less is recommended. Stay off the phone when you have a weak signal, as it will need more radiation to contact the tower. Phone use for children should also be limited because their brains absorb twice as much cell phone radiation.‎ ‎28. We can’t be sure whether cell phones cause cancer because .‎ A. there has been little research on the problem up to now B. if s difficult to track the bad effects of cell phone radiation C. different studies has been arguing fiercely about this problem D. there has been little evidence of it given the short history of cell phones ‎29. What did the IARC find from their research?‎ A. Radiation from the cell phone is certain to cause some brain cancers.‎ B. Using cell phone for long periods of time could increase the risk of cancer.‎ C. Cell phone use is more likely to cause a common cancer than a dangerous one.‎ D. Staying away from cell phones with weak signal can reduce the risk of cancer.‎ ‎30. What is recommended to reduce the harm from cell phone use?‎ A. Staying far away from the signal tower.‎ B. Using cell phones when the signal is weak.‎ C. Limiting children’s exposure to cell phones.‎ D. Talking more and texting less via cell phones. ‎ ‎31. What does “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?‎ A. A cell phone. B. The phone user.‎ C. The phone radiation. D. The cell phone signal.‎ D NASA might be famous for sending rockets up to space quickly. But it will be more famous for making your next holiday come more quickly.‎ The space agency is working on a new plane, which could solve the problems of supersonic (超音速的) flight and vastly increase the speed of journeys abroad. If successful, the plane would be able to fly between New York and London in just three hours. And it would reduce the time spent flying other journeys by a half, since it could be used more broadly. Until now,the problem with such planes has been the sonic boom (声爆), made famous by the original Concorde. That happens when a plane reaches supersonic speeds.‎ It is a thunderous noise that upsets people on the ground—disturbing animals and even causing physical problems to materials and houses underneath. It was that effect that led Congress to ban such planes from being used over the US land, a decision that in turn was responsible for Concorde’s failing to be commercially used.‎ In view of the problem, the space agency has developed a new technology and tried it out in wind tunnels, and now believes that it could be put to commercial use. That plane will fly as high as 55,000 feet—far higher than normal planes—and make a sound of only 60 decibels. That’s far less than 90 decibels thrown out by normal planes, and is roughly in line with a car on the motorway or a busy restaurant.‎ ‎“As long as we can get endorsement from the general public, the plane will probably be ‎ something that’s acceptable,” said Peter Coen, project manager for NASA’s commercial supersonic research team, in a new Bloomberg report. “If we get approved, we will have the full-sized version of the plane tried out and the plane will be put into use.”‎ ‎32. Why does the author mention Concorde?‎ A. To suggest the rapid development of planes.‎ B. To stress the negative effect of sonic booms.‎ C. To introduce how a commercial plane is designed.‎ D. To show Congress’ important role in making planes.‎ ‎33. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?‎ A. The basic data of the new plane.‎ B. The working principle of the new plane.‎ C. The problems of the new plane.‎ D. The potential market of the new plane.‎ ‎34. What does the underlined word “endorsement” in paragraph 5 mean?‎ A. Response B. Commitment. C. Investment D. Agreement ‎34. What is the purpose of the passage?‎ A. To inform people of NASA’s new plane.‎ B. To prove the disadvantages of supersonic flight.‎ C. To explain why speed matters in supersonic flight.‎ D. To clarify some misunderstandings about commercial planes.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Things I Wish I’d Known in High School Sometimes high school seems like a necessary evil. Now at the end of my college journey, I know that there are still more things I could have done to make my high school experience more beneficial.‎ ‎ 36 Take a class that scares you during high school. The experience will definitely prepare you for future academic challenges.‎ Don’t worry about your grades too much. Getting a B is not the end of the world. 37 I ‎ started college with all A’s since seventh grade, and it was hard to deal with not being able to repeat that. I stayed away from taking some harder courses I might have done well in because I was afraid of doing poorly. Now, I can fully accept that if I try my best in at least one harder class and get a B+, that is still something to be proud of.‎ Find your own de-stressing routine. Another essential skill to begin building in high school is how to manage work and stress. Maybe you deal with stress by going for a run, or watching a silly movie. Talk with a friend for a while or play with your dog. 38 ‎ Spend your summers wisely. Don’t take on a full-time job the first summer you decide to work. 39 Do find something to do that will make the ten weeks worthwhile. Look for programs that take you to interesting places, or a job that will give you insight into something you might be interested in.‎ Finally, remember to have fun. Your life does not depend on high school. 40 You will have plenty of time to work hard in college and beyond. Be prepared, but don’t stress out too much about it. If you can make your high school experience fun, you will have no problem doing the same for your life in college and beyond.‎ A. In fact, it’s kind of a good thing.‎ B. Take full advantage of your brain.‎ C. You do have to be active about making friends.‎ D. Do your best, but leave time for fun with friends.‎ E. Forty hours a week will be a huge shock and you’ll have plenty of time for that in the future.‎ F. Find out what relaxes you, and you will feel less stressed.‎ G They will be improved if you make great efforts. ‎ About six years ago I was going through a tough time, trying to work two jobs to afford my rent.
