B A cat is recovering in California after surviving a 6,500-mile journey across the Pacific stowed inside a Chinese shipping container without food or water. Staff and volunteers have named it “Ni Hao”, which is Chinese for “hello”. It was discovered breathing shallowly after a two-week trip across the Pacific Ocean. The cat was seriously suffering from loss of water and starvation when the container was opened in California last week, but was said to be doing well after being sent to the Carson Animal Care Centre in Los Angeles. At first it was too weak to stand, but finally took its first steps. Then it ate a good meal and slept soundly. The cat woke up on Thursday morning, physically in a better condition than 24 hours ago. “Ni Hao greeted the medical team with its first meow this morning and is attempting to stand,” said Marcia Mayeda, head of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control. Aaron Reyes, director of the Department, added, “We finally got to hear its voice. It sounds like a single-engine plane.” Ni Hao is expected to be observed for 60 days but afterwards animal workers will look forward to providing it with a good shelter. “It’s much better for it to recover in a home environment,” Mr. Reyes said. “It’s just like a human being in a hospital so we’re hoping to move it.” He added, “Little by little we’re getting there. We’re hoping that under the treatment and with rest, it’ll be able to recover quickly.” It was not immediately clear how the cat got into the container. 25. What does the underlined word “stowed” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. packed B. raised C. hidden D. driven 26. What did the cat eat during the journey? A. The mouse B. The bread. C. Only water D. Nothing 27. When did the container to California start on its journey? A. 60 days ago B. 2 weeks ago C. One month ago D. 24 hours ago 28. The cat is likely to be taken care of by in the future. A. a caring family B. animal workers C. a medical team D. an animal shelter C Digital technology-email and smart phones especially-have vastly improved workers’ ability to be productive outside of a traditional office. Even so, most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey of office workers conducted by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses arc doubtful about remote working. Half of the workers say their boss doesn’t accept it, and only 35 percent say it’s tolerated. Skeptical bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced (加深) by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they’ve watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner. It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more efficient (高效的), because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It’s much faster, for example, to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work rush. The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted reflects how far we haven’t come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker. More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be missing a low-cost way to give workers something of value. Sixty-four percent of those survey participants who haven’t worked remotely would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home. Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility (灵活性) to manage their time efficiently. 29. Why do some employers hesitate to allow remote working? A. They have little trust in modem technology. B. They want to stick to their routine practice. C. They fear losing control of their workers. D. They are used to face-to-face communication. 30. What seems to be most workers’ attitude toward remote working? A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Reserved. D. Disapproving. 31. What does the author suggest smart firms do? A. Shorten their office hours. B. Give employees a pay raise. C. Reduce their staffs workload. D. Adopt flexible work patterns. D Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee (拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries. Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy (书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them. But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write. In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?’’ we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin, “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. ‘‘Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher. 32. What can we learn about the Character Hero? A. It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China. B. It’s open to people of all ages and all walks. C. It draws great public attention across the country. D. It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world. 33. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters? A. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters. B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy. C. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology. D. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often. 34. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is . A. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive B. a requirement made by the Education Ministry C. necessary for adults to survive in China D. an ability to be developed only when you are students 35. Where does this text probably come from? A. A science report. B. A news report. C. Children’s literature. D. An advertisement. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Be a Green Child What does it mean to be green? “Green” is more than just a color. 36 Why green? Plants are green, and without them the Earth wouldn’t be such a lovely home for us human beings. What can we do? Here’s a four-step guide to being green. Reduce It! 37 For instance, a shorter shower means you used less water and less fuel since your house uses to run the heater that warmed up the water. Reuse It! Sometimes people call ours a “throwaway society”. It means that we’re a little to willing to throw away old stuff (东西) and buy new stuff. 38 . For instance, if your baby brother becomes older and loses interest in his plastic basketball hoop (篮圈), why not give it to another family who has a little kid? Recycle It! Recycling has never been easier. Many communities will pick it up right in front of your house and some towns even require it. Recycled goods go to a recycling center, where they can be turned into new cans, bottles, and paper. Enjoy It! It’s true that rubbish and pollution are problems, but the Earth remains a huge and beautiful place that’s ready for you to explore. 39 Go for a hike, visit local nature centers and gardens, and climb up mountains. But before you travel the globe, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a spot where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? 40 A. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. B. Many times, even if you no longer need something, someone else just might. C. You can start locally by visiting the naturally beautiful spots in your city. D. Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth. E. Get out there and get your hands dirty. F.
