Many people think a telephone is essential. But I think it is a pest and a time waster. Very often you find it impossible to escape from some idle or curious chatter-box, or from somebody who wants something for nothing. If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out, or when you are taking your bath. Are you strong minded enough to ignore it, to say to yourself,“Ah, well, it will all be the same in a hundred years’ time” You are not. You think there may be some important news or messages for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Have you never rushed dripping from the bath, or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number? But you will say, you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of emergency—illness, an accident, or fire? Of course, you are right, but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity. I think perhaps I had better try to justify myself by trying to prove that what I like is good. I admit that in different circumstances—if I were a tycoon(business VIP),for instance, or bed ridden I might find a telephone essential. But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car essential. Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent; one is mechanical invention, the other is literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them. For I have just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be something important. 1.The passage is mainly discussing _______. A. that we should be strong enough to ignore a phone call B. that important message will reach you sooner or later C. whether it’s necessary to answer all phone calls D. whether it is necessary to have a telephone 2.Judging from the passage, who is strong-minded enough to ignore a phone call? A. The author. B.A tycoon. C.A taxi-driver. D. Hardly anyone. 3.According to the passage, the author________. A. thinks the telephone should go out of our life B. likes to be different from other people C. thinks the telephone is annoying D. speaks favourably of a telephone 4.In the author’s opinion, which of the following is NOT true? A. Nearly everyone has been told a wrong number. B. It’s necessary for everyone to have a telephone. C. He himself can not decide whether to answer a call. D.A telephone directory may bring in unexpected calls. 5.As I was reading a recent story in Slate on 20-somethings complaining about how the economy was ruining their life plans, I couldn’t help but think the 20-somethings sounded like a bunch of spoiled children who grew up expecting everything to be easy for them. As a 20-something myself, I certainly share their disappointment: my husband and I probably won’t be able to buy a house until we’re in our 40s, and we too are burdened by student loans(贷款). But why should it be any different? Being young persons in America, shouldn’t they take up all of the challenges and opportunities that this country offers? Consider some of these views shared in the Slate story: Jennifer, 29, owner of a two-bedroom apartment with her husband, worries that she won’t be able to have children for at least a decade because they can’t afford to buy a house yet. I read that, and I thought, what planet is she living on where you need to own a house in order to have kids? Has she ever visited a developing country, or even downtown areas in this one? Home ownership is a luxury(奢华), not a fertility requirement. A 26-year-old in the story despairs(绝望) that he can’t afford to get a Ph.D. in literature. Well, that sounds a bit like expressing disappointment that no one will pay you to write poetry on the beach in Thailand for five years. Yes, it’s sad that these young people feel so lost. But I think the problem is their extremely high expectations, not economic reality. Beth Kobliner, author of Get a Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your Twenties and Thirties, says that she thinks people’s expectations are slowly adjusting, but today’s 20-somethings grew up at a time when everyone’s wealth appeared to be expanding. Their parents probably saw their home values rise along with their investments. “So you have people who have grown up in an environment where people had great expectations of what living well means,” says Kobliner. This recession(衰退) will certainly play a role in forcing those expectations into more realistic group. In the meantime, it seems a lot better for our mental health to focus on being grateful-for our one-bedroom apartments, for living in modern cities, or perhaps just for being able to eat three meals a day-than on longing for some kind of luxury life. 67.What makes the author think the 20-somethings sound like a bunch of spoiled children? A.They expect everything to be easy for them. B.They complain that the economy is spoiling their life plans. C.They are reluctant to face all of the challenges. D.They are burdened by student loans. 68.The underlined word “fertility” in Paragraph 3 probably means . A.baby production B.pleasant C.baby comfort D.essential 69.Which of the following is not one of the complaints of the 20-somethings? A.They can’t have children for at least a decade to buy a house. B.They have only one-bedroom apartment to live in. C.They can’t buy a house until 40 because of student loans. D.They despair at not being able to afford a Ph.D. in literature. 70.What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage? A.To tell us what the author’s attitude towards the 20 – somethings. B.To explain why young people can’t afford to buy a house. C.To suggest what we should do when young people’s high hopes create despair. D.To explain what the 20 – something’s high expectations are. What改为How 8. but改为and 9. asking改为asked 10. possibly改为possible 【解析】第一处:考查时态。 a lot修饰动词,a lot of修饰名词。 they代指上一句提到的“my parents”。 concentrate on意为“把注意力集中到……”,是固定短语,故要将in改为on。 该从句补充完整为:when I am asked by my classmates。 When it comes to service work, it is important to realize that the actual goal should be getting the most out of your volunteering work.(当谈起志愿者的服务工作时,最重要的是意识到它的实际目标是能够从志愿工作中得到很多。) Volunteering allows students to get involved with new things and develop social and academic skills that couldn’t be learned in a classroom environment.(做志愿者可以使学生参与新事物,发展在课堂上学不到的社会与实践能力。) Jill, a senior student, has been a volunteer in her community for more than three years.(一个中学生吉尔为她的社区做志愿者已经三年多了。) They always tell me how great we sound and how they wish they had taken time to learn an instrument in their youth.(他们总是告诉我听起来棒极了,并希望他们年轻时也能学一件乐器该多好啊。) Volunteering isn’t one of the most attractive jobs, but it is one of the most beneficial and up lifting(令人振奋的).(做志愿者虽然不是最吸引人的工作,但是最有益的和令人振奋的工作之一。)Volunteer work makes us feel good. It builds self-confidence and lifts up the spirits. 36. 81.It was the window that Tom broke with a stone yesterday. 82. English will be taught to the pupils in the school next month. /The pupils will be taught English in the school next month. 83. Only after he had apologized to me did I help him. 84.
