B It all started in 2013, when Shea Stollenwerk, then eight years old, asked for a new hand for Christmas. Shea was born with a partial right hand, which restricts her ability to do things that other kids take for granted. “My mom went online”, says Shea, who lives in Muknowango, Wisconsin. Shea’s mother, Ranee, soon learned about a community of artists, designers, and scientists who are making big breakthrough with artificial hands. Frankie Flood, a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, was among the designers who saw Ranee’s online request. Flood obtained help from fellow professor Adeam Blair and their students, who were learning how to make designs using a 3-D printer. “We made a mold(模子) of Shea’s hand out of plaster(石膏), and then we 3-D scanned her hand,” Flood says. While being fitted in Flood’s laboratory, Shea got to choose the color of her new hand. She went with bright pink. She now has a pink hand, a purple hand, and a purple and pink one, and can do things that she couldn’t do before, like peeling potatoes, picking up objects, and catching a ball. Flood and his team have since built hands for six other local children. Indirectly, they have helped dozens more by posting their designs online so that people around the world can print them out. Flood is also working on artificial legs for military soldiers who were injured on the battlefield. “Without a covering, the artificial leg is kind of ugly and plain,” Flood says. “Soldiers want something that will restore the shape of their legs and make them look cooler when they’re playing sports.” As for Shea, the aspiring musician can now play her violin with the help from an adaptive device that Flood’s team created. “Nothing is ever going to hold her back,” Shea’s father, Steve, told a local reporter. 24.What do we know about Shea from Paragraph 1? A. Her left hand is weak . B. She is eager for many gifts. C. She was born with a disability. D. She comes from a poor family. 25.What can Shea do with the help of her new hand? A. She can do simple things easily . B. She can play different kinds of sports. C. She can build hands for other children. D. She can make designs using a 3-D printer. 26.What can we infer from the passage? A. Flood made Shea’s new hand alone. B. Shea has hands of different colours now. C. Soldiers like artificial legs though they are ugly. D. Ranee made big breakthrough with artificial hands. 27.What do Steve’s words suggest in the last paragraph? A. Shea is a determined girl B. Shea has an advanced device C. Shea is a famous musician now D. Shea gets much help from her family C A new “smart bin” could mean the end of environment-conscious families spending hours sorting tins, cartons, bottles, and cardboard for recycling. The invention, which can help sort rubbish into recycling categories without needing people to operate. It is being trialed in Poland and is set to go on sale in UK within a few years. The bin, designed by start-up company Bin.E, recognizes different type of waste via a system positioned inside the bin which uses sensors, image recognition and artificial intelligence. Once waste is placed inside, the camera and sensor identify its type and place it in one of the smaller bins. Then it compresses the waste so it occupies less space. It is thought that the bin could be stocked by department stores such as John Lewis, which said it is introducing more new hi-tech recycling bins. Matt Thomas, a buyer at John Lewis, gave us the reason, “We’ve recently seen a jump in specialist bins sales, with a 25 percent increase in the last few months alone. We have noticed our customers are becoming more and more focused on sustainability. In response to this demand, we are really excited to introduce a smart bin this autumn/winter season-designed to make recycling more efficient and functional for the everyday home." Bin.E's official release on the market will take place in 2018. However, at first only a larger version designed for offices will be available. The office bin will sell at £ 430 while customers will need to pay a £ 107 subscription fee for an accompanying smartphone app, which hooks them up with collection services. A spokesman at Bin.E said that home version of the bin will be cheaper and will not include a monthly payment. They added: “After the office version, we plan to create an outdoor version and later the home version. We decided to go for the outdoor version for public areas first because it is more difficult to organize an efficient waste segregating system than in our homes.” 28. What do we know about a new “smart bin” from the first paragraph? A. It is easy to operate. B. It has been used widely. C. It works automatically. D. It is very expensive. 29. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. The waste. B. The camera. C. The bin. D. The sensor. 30. Why is John Lewis introducing more new hi-tech recycling bins? A. To change people’s behaviour. B. To satisfy increasing demands. C. To popularize new technology. D. To make them more famous. 31. Where will the first version of new “smart bin” be used according to Bin. E’s official? A. At home. B. In the supermarket. C. In the open air. D. In the office. D Last summer, two nineteenth-century cottages were rescued from remote farm fields in Montana, to be moved to an Art Deco building in San Francisco. The houses were made of wood. These cottages once housed early settlers as they worked the dry Montana soil; now they hold Twitter engineers. The cottages could be an example of the industry’ s odd love affair with “low technology,” a concept associated with the natural world, and with old-school craftsmanship (手艺) that exists long before the Internet era. Low technology is not virtual (虚拟的) —so, to take advantage of it, Internet companies have had to get creative. The rescued wood cottages, fitted by hand in the late eighteen-hundreds, are an obvious example, but Twitter’s designs lie on the extreme end. Other companies are using a broader interpretation (阐释) of low technology that focuses on nature. Amazon is building three glass spheres filled with trees, so that employees can “work and socialize in a more natural, park-like setting.” At Google’s office, an entire floor is carpeted in glass. Facebook’s second Menlo Park campus will have a rooftop park with a walking trail. Olle Lundberg, the founder of Lundberg Design, has worked with many tech companies over the years. “We have lost the connection to the maker in our lives, and our tech engineers are the ones who feel impoverished (贫乏的) , because they’re surrounded by the digital world,” he says. “They’re looking for a way to regain their individual identity, and we’ve found that introducing real crafts is one way to do that.” This craft based on theory is rooted in history, William Morris, the English artist and writer, turned back to pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties, just after the Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts movement defined itself against machines. “Without creative human occupation, people became disconnected from life,” Morris said. Research has shown that natural environments can restore(恢复) our mental capacities. In Japan, patients are encouraged to “forest-bathe,” taking walks through woods to lower their blood pressure. These health benefits apply to the workplace as well. Rachel Kaplvin, a professor of environmental psychology, has spent years researching the restorative effects of natural environment. Her research found that workers with access to nature at the office—even simple views of trees and flowers—felt their jobs were less stressful and more satisfying. If low-tech offices can potentially nourish the brains and improve the mental health of employees then, fine, bring on the cottages. 32. The writer mentions the two nineteenth-century cottages to show that ________. A. Twitter is having a hard time B. old cottages are in need of protection C. early settlers once suffered from a dry climate in Montana D. Internet companies have rediscovered the benefits of low technology 33. Low technology is regarded as something that _______. A. is related to nature B. is out of date today C. consumes too much energy D. exists in the virtual world 34. The main idea of Paragraph 5 is that human beings ________. A. have destroyed many per-industrial arts B. have a tradition of valuing arts and crafts C. can become intelligent by learning history D. can regain their individual identity by using machines 35. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Past Glories, Future Dreams B. The Virtual World, the Real Challenge C.
