It is a good city for cycling because it is flat and there are plenty of places for bicycle parking. Today some people call Amsterdam the “City of Bicycles” because of the convenience for bicycles there. In the 1960s, a group of cycling fans had an idea. They believed that it would be better for everybody if cars weren’t allowed in the city centre and only bicycles were. They were hopeful that this would help to save energy, reduce pollution and provide free public transport. The group painted hundreds of bicycles white and placed them in lots of neighbourhoods around Amsterdam for people to use. Then a problem came — thieves took all the bicycles within weeks! However, more than thirty years later, the“white bike” is back in town — this time with a computer chip(芯片) to record its every move! To take a bicycle, you have to insert(插入) a special card. The new “white bike” is not actually white but is an unusual design with bright colours. The bikes are parked at special parking places and people who want to use them have to take them to another special parking place that has enough room. There is already less traffic in central Amsterdam, because both locals and tourists have been using the white bikes. Instead, thanks to the good ideas of lots of people, like the cycling fans in the 1960s, many people around the world have been enjoying city centre streets without cars many years. 24. Amsterdam is called the “City of Bicycles” because of ______. A. the cycling fans there B. the appearance of bicycles C. the quality of bicycles D. the convenience for bicycles - 14 - 25. In the 1960s, some cycling fans hoped bikes could ______. A. help to save energy B. be specially designed C. be placed anywhere D. be painted in different colours 26. Why did the first “white bike” plan fail? A. People were tired of riding bikes. B. There were not enough parking places. C. Thieves took all the bikes within weeks. D. The government allowed people to drive cars freely. 27. What do people use if they want to take a “white bike” in the city? A. A white key. B. A special card. C. A special computer. D. A common chip. C Chinese New Year has been welcomed in Britain with its biggest ever program of events and celebrations. D If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can - 14 - lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,”said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirtyfour. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better.“Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,”explained the scientists. 32. The main subject talked about in this passage is ______. A. language learning and maths study B. science on learning a second language C. that language can help improve brain power D. man’s ability of learning a second language 33. The underlined word “bilinguals” probably means ______. A. active language learners - 14 - B. second language learners C. researchers on language learning D. people who can speak two languages 34. We may know from the scientific findings that ______. A. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second language C. the experience of learning a second language has bad effects on people’s brain D. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time 35. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that ______. A. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language B. learning a second language is the same as studying maths C. you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language D. early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Tips on listening in English exams Listening is an important part for middle school students in English exams. And quite a few students find it difficult to deal with it. In that case, the following suggestions may benefit you a lot. ●Relax yourself. Before listening, it’s necessary to have a peaceful state of mind. 36 If that doesn’t work, drinking some water or washing your face with cold water may help you to some extent. ● 37 As soon as the listening starts, focus on it without thinking about - 14 - anything else. While listening, you can also recall(回想)the related knowledge in common with the material concerned, such as the vocabulary about the subject or topic, which is beneficial to your better understanding. ●Grasp the main idea. Sometimes the monologue(独白), dialogue or conversation you’re listening to is a little bit longer than you expect. And it’s normal that some unnecessary information is included. However, you don’t need to understand it completely. 38 ●Ignore the new words. Without doubt, there usually exist unfamiliar words in a passage for students, whether in reading or listening materials. In fact, it’s almost impossible for you to know or understand all the words in the listening material sometimes. 39 It’s mistaken to waste much time on figuring them out while listening . ●Develop the habit of taking notes. In the course of listening, it’s a good habit to write down the main content and leave out the unimportant details. 40 By taking notes, we can remind ourselves of the key points. But bear in mind that never allow note-taking to get in the way of understanding what you’re hearing. A. Concentrate on listening. B. The more words you memorize , the better it is. C. Feeling nervous or worried is harmful and unnecessary. D. What you need to do is ignore the new words. E. Write down what you think is important while listening. F.
