It is much easier to cook and prepare tasty and nutritious meals and snacks when everyone is working on the same goals. Here are some tips for you and your family. Be a good role model. Teens are easily affected by what they see, so it is important for family members to follow a healthy lifestyle. If parents are active and eating well, teens are likely to follow. Keep healthy food in the house. If nutritious foods are available, your family members are likely to make healthier choices. Fill the refrigerator and freezer with nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lowfat dairy products (yogurt, cheese and milk), and whole grains. Cook and eat meals together. Learning how to cook is an important life lesson. Ask your teens to prepare healthy meals with you. Instead of fried foods, use healthier ways to prepare foods such as baking, steaming, or microwaving. Talking and connecting with your teens is an important part of family time and it will also help slow down the pace of the meal so as to prevent overeating. Eat at home most of the time. Fast food is higher in fat, salt and calories than most meals prepared at home. What’s more, portion sizes(套餐)at fast food and other restaurants are usually too large, and can lead to weight gain. Make small behavior changes. Permanent(永久的) changes in health happen with small steps, not with strict dieting. Focus on making small changes, such as drinking less regular soda and juice, eating more fruit and vegetables which are rich in Vitamins, or eating less fast food. Making small changes as a family can lead to great health benefits. Click here for more information. 21. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. C When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation(住所). I suggested that they should stay at ‘bed and breakfast’ houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories. “We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.” I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought ‘VACANCIES’ meant ‘holidays’, because the Spanish word for ‘holidays” is ‘vacaciones’. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said ‘VACANCIES’, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said ‘NO VACANCIES’, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels! We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word ‘DIVERSION’ means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word ‘DIVERSION’ on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole. English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said ‘Thank you’ in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that ‘Thank you’ in French means ‘No, thank you.’ 29. My Spanish friends wanted advice about ________. A. finding places to stay in England B. learning English C. driving their car on English roads D. going to England by car 30. I suggested that they stay at bed and breakfast houses because ________. A. it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels B. they would be able to practice their English C. it would be convenient for them to have dinner D. there would be no problem about finding accommodation there 31. “NO VACANCIES” in English means ________. A. free rooms B. not away on holiday C. no free rooms D. holidays 32. When someone offered me more coffee and I said ‘Thank you’ in French, I ________. A. didn’t really want any more coffee B. wanted them to take the coffee pot away C. wanted to express my politeness D. really wanted some more coffee D You get anxious if there’s no wi-fi in the hotel or mobile phone signal up the mountain. You feel upset if your phone is getting low on power and you secretly worry things will go wrong at work if you’re not there. All these can be called “always on” stress caused by smart phone addiction(上瘾). For some people, smart phones have freed them from the nine-to-five work. Flexible working has given them more autonomy(自主权)in their working lives and enabled them to spend more time with their friends and families. For many others, though, smart phones have become cruel masters in their pockets, never allowing them to turn them off and relax. Pittsburgh-based developer Kevin Holesh was worried about how much he was ignoring his family and friends in favor of his iPhone. So he developed an app — Moment — to monitor his usage. The app enables users to see how much time they’re spending on the device(设备)and set up warnings if the usage limits are broken. “Moment’s goal is to promote balance in your life,” his website explains. “Some time on your phone, some time off it enjoying your loving family and friends around you.” Dr. Christine Grant, an occupational psychologist at Coventry University, said, “The effects of this ‘always on’ culture are that your mind is never resting, and you’re not giving your body time to recover, so you’re always stressed. And the more tired and stressed we get, the more mistakes we make. Physical and mental health can suffer.” And as the number of connected smart phones is increasing, so is the amount of data. This is leading to a sort of decision paralysis(瘫痪)and is creating more stress in the workplace because people have to receive a broader range of data and communications which are often difficult to manage. “It actually makes it more difficult to make decisions and many do less because they’re controlled by it all and feel they can never escape the office,” said Dr. Christine Grant. 33. What’s the first paragraph mainly about? A. The popularity of smart phones. B. The progress of modern technology. C. The signs of “always on” stress. D. The cause of smart phone addiction. 34. Kevin Holesh developed Moment to_______. A. research how people use their mobile phones B. help people control their use of mobile phones C. make people better use mobile phones D. increase the fun of using mobile phones 35. What’s Dr. Christine Grant’s attitude towards “always on” culture? A. Confused. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Critical. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分 ) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you think your vocabulary is weak, a little effort every day over six to nine months can go a long way in improving it.
