This is why it is important to make a good first impression on the person who will be interviewing you. Within the first 60 seconds of meeting you, the interviewer will have formed an impression about what type of person you are and what kind of employee you would become, and 55% of this will be based only on your body language. Here are some tips to make that impression a good one. First of all, relax. Think positive thoughts and you are more likely to come across as a positive, confident person during the interview. Dress smartly, as your appearance is one of the first things an interviewer will notice you. Stand up straight, and walk in with your shoulders back and your head up. Try to avoid slowing down as you walk into the room because this suggests fear and uncertainty. Shake hands with the interviewer firmly. You should have a positive handshake and a warm smile. Opening your coat or jacket as you sit down shows that you, too, are open. Posture is important. You should be sitting well back in your seat. Sit up straight and lean(倾斜)forward slightly, but not too much. Sitting at too much of an angle expresses discomfort and distrust. Two of the most common defensive(防卫的) signals are crossing your arms and legs, so try to avoid them. Another important issue is eye contact. Looking someone in the eye shows confidence in yourself and trust in the other person. However, don’t overdo it, as too much eye contact or staring will make the other person uncomfortable. Use more eye contact when listening than talking, and when you look away, look down. Looking up at the ceiling will make you seem bored or rude. 56. The purpose of the first paragraph is to tell readers_____. A. how to make a good first impression B. how long it takes to make a good first impression C. the importance of making a good impression D. what a good first impression is 57. Which of the following does the author advise you to do when you are being interviewed? A. Open your coat or jacket when sitting down. B. Go into the room more slowly than usual. C. Avoid looking at the eyes of the interviewer directly. D. Gross your arms or legs. 58. If you lean forward too much, it means you______. A. are too nervous B. don’t have confidence C. don’t trust others C. are very bored 59. Which is the best title for the passage? A. How to answer questions in an interview B. How to use body language to win an interview C. How to understand body language D. A US-based study found a total of 116 reports of death or injury to pedestrians wearing headphones between 2004 and 2011, jumping from 16 in 2005 to 47 in 2011. Most victims were men (68%) and under the age of 30 (67%), with around one in 10 of all cases (9%) under the age of 18. Some 89% of the cases occurred in urban areas and more than half (55%) of the victims were struck by trains. Eighty-one of the 116 accidents (70%) resulted in the person’s death---even though a warning was sounded in around a third of the cases. The study concluded,“The use of headphones may be a safety risk to pedestrians, especially in environments with moving vehicles. Further research is needed to determine if and how headphone use threatens pedestrian safety.” British road safety groups warned pedestrians to be careful. Floor Lieshout, director of Youth For Road Safety, said,“ This study shows once more the importance of using all of our senses while we are near traffic. It is important that we find an attractive way to make youth learn about the risks of wearing headphones in traffic.” Andrew Howard, who is the head of road safety at the Automobile Association, added that some pedestrians can be “so focused in their own little world they forget the world going on around them”. That can include headphone wearers, Howard said, but also people talking on phones. However, Howard said that more research needed to be done. Earlier studies have shown that people wearing headphones or talking on phones can suffer “inattentional blindness” which makes them isolated(孤立)from the world around them. Ian Harvey, at the charity Civic Voice, said that “to defeat isolation and to help build a civic(文明的)society, people need to interact(交往)with each other”. He said,“ A basis for any civilized society is communication---Surfing the web, listening to MP3s, reading blogs or sending e-mail is not interacting with a person; it’s interacting with a machine. “If people feel socially isolated, they need to have more face-to-face interactions with other human beings and in time, will begin to feel happier and more connected to the world and place they live in.” 64. What does the text mainly discuss? A. Recent research on the risks to pedestrians. B. Safety problems caused by wearing headphones. C. The advantages and disadvantages of headphones. D. Traffic accidents in the United States. 65. We can learn from the Us-based study that_____. A. most victims died in the accidents B. most accidents were caused by cars C. most accidents happened in the countryside D. most victims are under eighteen 66. Howard will probably agree that____. A. it is safe if you wear headphones in a proper way B. people wearing headphones are more likely to go blind C. most people wear headphones because of loneliness D. it is dangerous to talk on phones while walking 67. What Lan Harvey said shows the importance of____. A. beating isolation B. communication between people C. building a civilized society D. new technologies D True or False: ●I would be happier if I made more money, found the perfect husband, lost 10 pounds or moved to a new house. ●Happiness is genetic. You can’t change how happy you are any more than you can change how tall you are. ●Success brings happiness. Answers: False, False, False. If recent scientific research on happiness---and there has been quite a bit---has proved anything, it’s that happiness is not a goal. It’s a process. Although our tendency to be happy or not is partly inborn, it’s also partly within our control. Perhaps more surprising, happiness brings success, not the other way around. Though many people think happiness is hard to find, scientists have actually pinned it down and know how to get it. “Many of us have material things and our basic needs met, so we are looking for what comes after that,” says Diener, a psychologist. “Materialism isn’t bad. It’s only bad if we use it to replace other things in life like meaningful work, a good marriage, kids and friends. People are recognizing that those who make money more important than love have lower levels of life satisfaction.” “People around the world want it. If you ask people what they want for their children, they will say for them to be happy. There is no doubt that happiness matters to and affects everyone.” Among the major findings of the last decade is that the pursuit of happiness is a worthy cause. Diener says. “Happiness doesn’t just mean feeling good. It’s good for you and for society. Happy people are more successful, have better relationships, are healthier and live longer. We’ve learned in 10 years that happy people are more productive at work, learn more in school, get promoted more, are creative and are more popular.” 68. The True or False choices are given at the beginning of the passage to_____. A. draw people’s attention to the author B. test how much you know about happiness C. base the author’s analysis of happiness on your answers D. test whether you have a correct understanding of happiness 69. According to the passage, we can know that____. A. happiness lies in the process of the pursuit of it B. happiness is completely out of control sometimes C. happiness is determined by materialism D. happiness brings and results from success 70. From the passage, we can infer that_____. A. people around the world are affected by happiness B. the happier you are, the more likely you are to lead a better life. C. happiness is good not only for you but also for our society D. many people think it very difficult to pursue happiness 71. What is the most suitable title of the passage? A. Where Is Happiness B. How to Pursue Happiness C. What Is Happiness D. What Happiness Brings E British Columbia is the third Canadian provinces, both in area and population. It is nearly 1.5 times as large as Texas, and extends 800 miles (1,280 km) north from the United States border. It includes Canada’s entire west coast and the islands just off the coast. Most of British Columbia is mountainous, with long rocky ranges running north and south. Even the coastal islands are the remains of a mountain range that existed thousands of years ago. During the last Ice Age, this range was scoured(冲刷)by glaciers(冰川)until most of it was beneath the sea. Its peaks now show as islands scattered along the coast. More than half of British Columbia is heavily forested. On mountain slopes that receive plentiful rainfall, huge Douglas firs rise. These forest giants often grow to be as much as 300 feet (90m) tall. More wood is produced from these trees than from any other kind of tree in North America. Hemlock, red cedar, and balsam fir are among the other trees found in British Columbia. The southwestern coastal region has a mild marine climate. Sea winds that blow inland from the west are warmed by a current of warm water that flows through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperatures average above freezing and summers are mild. These western winds also carry moisture(湿气) from the ocean. Inland from the coast, the winds from the Pacific meet the mountain barriers of the coastal ranges and the Rocky Mountains. As they rise to cross the mountains, the winds are cooled, and their moisture begins to fall as rain. On some of the western slopes almost 200 inches (500cm) of rain fall each year. 72. Which of the following is NOT true about British Columbia? A. It has the largest population of all the provinces in Canada. B. In area it is much larger than Texas, the USA. C. All the west coast of Canada is included in it. D. It is second in area only to two other provinces in Canada. 73. The underlined part “Douglas firs” in Paragraph 3 refers to_____. A. birds B. trees C. flowers D. crops 74. Why does southwestern British Columbia have a mild climate? A. Because the Pacific Ocean is near it. B. Because there are many islands off the coast. C. Because a current of warm water affects sea winds. D. Because most of it is mountainous. 75. The passage mainly talks about British Columbia’s ____. A. weather and economy B. culture and geography C. culture and economy D. weather and geography 第Ⅱ卷 (非选择题共35分) 第四部分 写作 (共两节,满分35分) 第一节 任务型读写 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) 认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。 注意:每个空格只填1个单词。请将答案写在答题卡相应题号的横线上。 In every aspect of business, communication holds the key to improving cooperation(合作)and understanding. Here are some of the most important effects of encouraging communication on business. Building a good team requires a leader that communicates with each individual who is a part of it. Through direct communication, a leader can create a team that can perform perfectly in every department. With regular communication, many misunderstandings can be removed. This makes it easier for any employee to cut out unnecessary friction(摩擦)and free his mind to focus on the task at hand. No business process is perfect and there is always room for improvement. There are various separate departments that work together to create a product and each member of the team has concerns and suggestions regarding how they could improve the process. If communication channels are opened through weekly or monthly meetings and issues are discussed, a more smooth and efficient business process can be developed. Positive communication among the various team members that make up business departments helps sort out problems quite easily in a business process. Most importantly, when doubts, misunderstandings and other such issues are sorted out, a positive atmosphere is automatically created as everyone focuses his mind on his work and feels like he is a part of the big picture. Communicating with the customers through surveys can help understand the market conditions in a better way. What a product is lacking is best pointed out by a customer. When the management team has a better understanding of market conditions and reads the mind of the consumer, coming up with the right product is easier. To conclude, communication is the key to building up and managing successful business. Developing your business team and encouraging the opening of communication channels among your team members can eliminate(消除)much of the friction that may slow down the business process.
