According to a study, a BFF (Best Friend Forever) does not come cheap with devoted pals blowing £4,679 on birthday presents alone over a lifetime. And while it costs nothing to be a shoulder to cry on, big-hearted Britons go the extra mile and spend £168 on pick-me-ups (提神物品) to get their mate through a rocky patch (艰难时刻) like a breakup of a relationship. There’s a further £242 spent on presents to show how much they mean from gifts bought on holiday to treats for no reason. And distance does not break up a close friendship as BFFs spend a whopping (巨大的) £18,000 on travel to see each other despite being miles apart because of university, jobs and marriage. The study by cashback site TopCashBack found on average BFFs who wed can expect £431 spent on them and a further £283 on gifts when they have children. And they can rely on their pals to help out when they move house as they will obtain £127 worth of housewarming presents and takeaways as well as putting in a shift with the packing and unpacking. The survey based on a friendship lasting 40 years found more than eight in ten adults with a BFF felt their friendships were worth every penny. TopCashBack spokesperson Natasha Smith said, “Those friendships which stand the test of time are often the most important in our lives. However, they come at a cost. From train tickets once a month to flights and a new dress for a wedding on the Italian coast, the price paid for having a best mate can soon add up. But when we asked people to compare their friendship with the monetary investment (投资), only 14% thought their friendship was equal to their investment with the vast majority thinking it was worth more.” 1.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Ambitious. B.Generous. C.Troublesome. D.Energetic. 2.To keep the relationship, where do BFFs spend most money? A.Buying birthday presents. B.Cheering up a friend in low spirits. C.Paying for holiday gifts and other treats. D.Going a particular distance to visit friends. 3.What is Natasha’s understanding of BFF friendship? A.It's costly and unaffordable. B.It's expensive but worthwhile. C.It's rewarding but hard to keep. D.It's changeable but worth possessing. 4.How is the passage developed? A.By listing figures. B.By reasoning. C.By analyzing causes. D.By making comparisons. 3、Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan. Open the curtains and turn up the lights. dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness. Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue. Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal. Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily makes us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass. 1.The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____. A.their home comforts B.their body shape C.house buying D.healthy diets 2.A home environment in blue can help people ____. A.digest food better B.reduce food intake C.burn more calories D.regain their appetites 3.What are people advised to do at mealtimes? A.Eat quickly. B.Play fast music C.Use smaller spoons D.Turn down the lights 4.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.Is Your House Making You Fat? B.Ways of Serving Dinner C.Effects of Self-Consciousness D.Is Your Home Environment Relaxing? 4、Whales, like all mammals(哺乳动物),need air, and come to the surface to breathe through a blowhole. A drone(无人机)that floats over the blowholes of humpback whales as they are making annual journey along Australia's east coast is being used by Australian scientists for collecting nasal mucus(鼻腔粘液)of whales. Vanessa Pirotta, a biologist at Macquarie University says that nasal mucus indicates the health of the whale. “It is the biological mixture that you see as a whale takes a breath as it surfaces from the water,” she said. You can hear sounds of sharp breaths as a whale breathes because, after all, they are animals like you and I. So as they take a breath it is a lot of lung bacteria coming out from their lungs, which we can collect to provide a brief idea of whale health. Australian researchers have attached a special dish that is used in scientific tests to a drone which flies through the whale's nasal mist. As a whale comes to take a breath—you can actually see it coming to the surface on really good weather days —the drone then lowers, the dish is then opened, collecting nasal mucus for later research. The research could help to solve one of the secrets of another impressive creature of the deep —the Southern right whale. Its numbers have recovered on Australia's west coast since hunting became suppressed but its population on the eastern seaboard remains stubbornly low. In the past studies into whale health had to rely on examining whales that were either killed or those whales that had been trapped on a beach. Drones allow scientists to collect nasal mucus from free-swimming whales to gather information in a safe way. 1.What is the drone mainly used to do? A.To gather information for researchers. B.To record new species of whales. C.To guarantee the safety of whales. D.To take photos of whales' annual journey. 2.How can a biologist find out a whale's health condition in the study? A.By examining liquids from its breath. B.By checking its lungs on a machine. C.By listening to the sounds of its breath. D.By studying its similarity with humans. 3.What does the underlined word “suppressed” in Paragraph 4 mean? A.Commercial. B.Rewarding. C.Hidden. D.Forbidden. 4.Why is the Southern right whale mentioned? A.To describe the difficulty to track it. B.To show the increasing population. C.To stress the urgency of doing the research. D.To indicate the potential application of the research. Chalk used in school classrooms comes in thin sticks. Lessons are often presented to entire classes on chalkboards (or blackboards, as they were originally called) using sticks of chalk.①______ As found in nature, chalk has been used for drawing since prehistoric times. Not only did instructors use large blackboards, but students also worked with personal chalkboards, completing with chalk sticks and a sponge or cloth to use as an eraser. These small chalkboards were used for practice, especially among the younger students. An important change in the nature of classroom chalk brought was in chalkboards. Blackboards used to be black, because they were made from true slate(石板).While some experts advocated a change to yellow chalkboards and dark blue or purple chalk to copy writing on paper, when makers began to shape chalkboards from synthetic(合成的)materials during the 20th century, they chose the color green, arguing that it was easier on the eyes.④______ Almost all chalk produced today is dustless. Earlier, softer chalk tended to produce a cloud of dust that some feared might contribute to breathing problems.⑤______It's just that the dust settles faster. A.Dustless chalk still produces dust. B.Yellow became the preferred color for chalk. C.Paper made only from rags at this time was expensive. D.That's because this method has been proven cheap and easy. E.Chalk was first formed into sticks for the convenience of artists. F.Baking chalk longer to harden it more helps to produce less dust. Our courses are aimed at students aged between 12 and 17 who are at pre-intermediate level or above i n English "和文中对课程优势的介绍可知,本文旨在面向12到17岁、英语水平在预备中级及以上的学生推广EFP课程,故D项正确。 画线部分后的“go the extra mile and spend£168 on piek-me-ups (提神物品) to get their mate through a rocky patch(艰难时刻)like the breakup of a relationship”就是对它的进一步说明。 根据第二段中的“blowing £4,679 on birthday presents” “spend £168 on pick-me-ups(提神物品)”以及第三段中的“£242 spent on presents… from gifts bought on holiday to treats…” “spend a whopping(巨大的)£18,000 on travel to see each other”可知,为了维持一段友谊,花在旅途中的费用是最多的,所以选D。 3. 根据最后一段中的“Those friendships which stand the test of time are often the most important in our1ives.However,they come at a cost”可知,Natasha认为,经受得起时间考验的友谊通常是我们人生中最重要的东西,但那是要付出成本的。 根据文章第三段中的“...people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red mom ”可知,在蓝色的屋子里吃饭,要比在黄色或者红色的屋子里少吃33%的食物。 根据最后一段“When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent ”可知,进餐时选择大的汤匙要比小的汤匙多吃14%的食物,因此建议使用小的汤匙。 4. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. play a role in“在某方面起作用”;pack on the pounds“增肥”;keep the pounds off“减肥”。 4答案及解析: 答案:1.A; 2.A; 3.D; 4.D 解析:1. 根据第一段中的“A drone(无人机)that floats over the blowholes of humpback whales as they are making annual journey along Australia's east coast is being used by Australian scientists for collecting nasal mucus(鼻腔粘液)of whales.” 根据第二段中的“Vanessa Pirotta, a biologist at Macquarie University says that nasal mucus indicates the health of the whale.” 根据倒数第二段中的“but its population on the eastern seaboard remains stubbornly low.” D 2. E 3. G 4. B 5. A 解析: 1. (注意空后的at that time) 4. 1.B; 2.D; 3.C; 4.B; 5.A; 6.C; 7.A; 8.B; 9.D; 10.C; 11.A; 12.D; 13.B; 14.C; 15.A; 16.D; 17.A; 18.B; 19.D; 20.C 解析:1. well 的比较级 ,well 可与 know 搭配,可表示程度。 4. 5.从母亲的答语 " You' ll run them off tomorrow"中可以看出 ,此处作者说的是蛋糕中的卡路里 。 6. 根据该空后 面作者的话 "What's going on?" 18.此处 two weeks ago 与第 六段 中的 two weeks later 相呼应。 19. 故选择However 。 7答案及解析: 答案:where; are placed; to show; left; to; the; fishermen; separation ; extremely; eastern 解析: 提到饮食文化就不能不说中国了,中国的饮食文化博大精深,源远流长。 be impolite to sb. Dear Jenny, Welcome to my school!
