A Mr. Brown worked in a factory of a small town. He had been there for twenty years before one day he was sent to the capital for important business. He was quite excited because he had never been there before. Before he set off, he asked his wife and three daughters if they wanted him to buy something for them in London. Mrs. Brown began to think it over and then she said she wished her husband would be able to buy a nice umbrella for her, and so did their three daughters. As he was afraid he would forget it, he drew an umbrella on his hand. To his regret, he lost it at the station. On the train Mr. Brown sat opposite to an old woman. The woman’s umbrella was so nice that he carefully looked at it and said to himself not to forget to buy a few umbrellas like it. When the train arrived at the station in London, he said good-bye to the old woman, took his bag and her umbrella and was going to get off. “Wait a minute, sir,” shouted the old woman. “That’s my umbrella!” Now Mr. Brown noticed that he had taken her umbrella. His face turned red at once and said in a hurry,“Oh, I’m very sorry, Madam! I didn’t mean it!” Seven days later Mr. Brown left the capital. To his surprise, he met the old woman and sat opposite to her again. Looking at the four umbrellas, the old woman was satisfied with herself. “It seems that I had a better result than the other four women.” She thought. 1. We can learn from the passage that Mr. Brown was ______. A. a conductor B. a worker C. a thief D. an umbrella maker 2. The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to ______. A. his ticket B. his bag C. his drawing D. his umbrella 3. When looking at Mr. Brown with four umbrellas, the woman felt ______. A. surprised B. angry C. fortunate D. sad 4. How did Mr. Brown get the four umbrellas? A. He picked them on the train. B. He brought them from his small town. C. He bought them in London. D. He stole them from four women. B Have you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly? Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Many people are afraid to support themselves. Dr Robert Albert, author of Stand Up, Speak Out, and Talk Back thinks it' s because their self-respect is low. "There's always a' superior' around--- parent, a teacher, a boss---who knows better." But Albert and other scientists are doing something to help people help themselves. They offer "assertiveness training" courses A.T. for short. In the A.T. Course people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be aggressive without hurting other people. In one way, learning to speak out is to get rid of fear. A group taking an A.T. Course will help the timid(胆怯的) person to lose his fear. But A.T. uses an even stronger motive--- he need to share. The timid person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels. Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-respect. If someone you face is more "important" than you, you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your answers to problems. You can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do you can learn to speak out. 5. The cause of the problem talked about in this passage is that _________. A. some people have a low self-respect B. there is always someone around who "knows better" C. salesmen talk people into buying things they don't want D. people don t share enough 6. The A.T. Course often _______. A. make people distrust their own answers B. make things more favorable for "superiors" C. help people know as much as their "superiors" D. help people become more important 7. One thing the A.T. Course don't do is to __________. A. share the need of people B. show they have a right to be themselves C. help people overcome fear D. help people to help themselves even if others suffer 8. A good title for this passage could be "__________". A. The Need to Share B. Talk Back When Necessary C. One Way to Build Self-Respect D. One Way to Train Speaking Ability C The other day I heard a few local musicians talking: “I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.” “I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.” But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.” I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are. Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (责怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者), chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”. This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard. Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path. 9. The musicians’ words at the beginning are written mainly to show ______. A. the musicians’ living conditions are quite poor B. people have poor taste in music C. people have different attitudes towards the same thing D. young people have greater chances of succeeding 10. The underlined sentence “they’re rubbing off on you” in Paragraph 6 means ______. A. they’ll push you ahead B. they’ll influence you C. they’ll cover your shortcomings D. they’ll help you achieve your goal 11. By taking the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7, you can ______. A. improve a lot in making more friends B. come to the right way of making friends C. develop a better relationship with your friends D. arrange the time with your friends properly 12. The passage is mainly written for ______. A. musicians B. managers C. negative people D. people wanting to succeed D Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives(蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmers' crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmers to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away. Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in Northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in Northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the prerecorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall(瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place. Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial(最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away. 13.We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of ________. A.loud noises B.some crops C.video cameras D.angry bees 14.As mentioned in the passage, Lucy________. A.works by herself in Africa B.needs to test more elephant groups C.has stopped elephants eating crops D.has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms 15.Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive? A.To record the sound of bees. B.To make a video of elephants. C.To see if elephants would run away. D.To find out more about the behaviour of bees. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Five Ways to Go Green and Save Green Climate change is in the news.
