I was secretly very worried. But my daughter kept begging me and I could not bear to reject her. Bravery was the most significant quality that I wanted her to possess. Her curiosity was so strong that I couldn’t resist. I nodded slightly, and my daughter’s frowning face slowly broke into a smile. 3 My response surprised my husband, who reacted with the wildest excitement as we walked towards the Skyway. When I stepped on it, I found myself horrified by the height. I grabbed the railing, almost unable to move. Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop. My heart beat loudly, casting scared glances down the bridge. My husband and daughter held my hands tightly. I walked as though I were drunk. But their firm gaze built up my confidence and we kept going together. “Mom, look, it’s so beautiful.” What I saw there filled my soul with joy. The bay spread out far below me. Beyond it stood the tall and beautiful skyscrapers. I looked down at my little girl who taught her mother how to be brave, and breathed a sigh of relief. Possible version 2: My daughter was waiting for my reply. I looked at her, then at the Skyway. I felt my heart threatening to burst out from my chest. My husband, who was used to this kind of situation and understood how scared I was, consoled me. He said he could go with our little girl instead. But my daughter wouldn’t give up easily and shouted out her own encouragement. I plucked up my courage and took my first step onto the suspension bridge, then another. I inched forward, all the way holding on tight to the handrail. Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop. I stood there, and my legs trembled despite my fruitless attempt to stay calm. Below the bridge, the treetops formed an ocean of green waves that threatened to devour me. Just then, I heard a familiar voice, and two little hands slipped into my arm. Looking down, I saw my little angel’s bright smile, encouraging me to finish the walk. Eventually, we reached the end together. My husband was surprised at my nerve, but I knew the reason I had felt so brave was for my little girl. 部分答案解析 阅读理解 Passage A 文章导读:年度必须书目。 21. I usually prefer science fiction, (1) but this book is great. I’ll lend it to you when I’m done. Text 2 M: What’s a selfie? W: A selfie is a photograph that you take of yourself. (2) Usually, people take selfies on their phones but you can also use a camera. Some people like to post their selfies on social media. Text 3 M: Can I go to yoga class with you next week? W: Sure! I go on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. Which day would be best for you? M: Well, I have a computer class on Tuesday... W: And on Fridays you visit your mom, right? I guess we have our day! (3) Text 4 W: It’s so crowded in here. The wait is going to take forever. Has anyone even come to greet us? M: I’ve heard this place has great food, so I’m sure it’s worth the wait. (4) Text 5 W: Sir! Please don’t give me that ticket. M: I’m sorry, ma’am. Your time ran out ten minutes ago. W: I was only gone for fifteen minutes. (5) Can you just let this one go? M: I can’t. Here’s your ticket. Have a nice day. Text 6 M: Do you want to go to dinner on Friday night? W: I’m flying to Las Vegas on Friday night. I can hang out on Saturday next week, though. We can have dinner and watch a movie. (6) M: Okay. I may invite Emma to come with us. W: Sounds good to me. I love Emma! M: Well, have fun in Las Vegas. I’ve never been there before. W: It’s a business trip, so I’ll be with my boss the whole weekend. (7) I probably won’t get much my own time. I’ll see you next week! Text 7 W: Excuse me. I’m lost. Can you help me? (9) M: Sure. Where are you trying to go? (9) W: I’m looking for the university. (8) M: Make a right at the end of the block, and keep going until you reach Second Street. Then make a left. You’ll see the university straight ahead. Are you a student? 6 W: No, I’m just visiting a friend. I took the train in from the city. She gave me directions, but they weren’t very good. M: The university can be hard to find, especially from the train station. W: Yeah. I wish she had told me to just take a taxi. Oh, well. It looks like I’m almost there. M: Yep. Have a good day! W: Thanks again. Text 8 M: Ellen, please eat your vegetables. W: I hate vegetables! M: They’re good for you, and they’ll help you grow up big and strong. (10) W: I don’t want to grow up big and strong. I don’t think I should be eating anything that’s green. It just doesn’t seem natural. M: Don’t be silly. Just eat them. You also have some fruit on your plate that you haven’t touched. W: I’d rather just eat my pasta. M: If you don’t eat your fruit and vegetables, you won’t be able to eat dessert. (11) W: What do we have for dessert today? M: Well, there’s that leftover chocolate cake in the kitchen that Mom made for your birthday last week. (12) But like I said, you can only have a piece if you eat your fruit and vegetables. W: Okay, I’ll eat them. I really want that cake. (11) All finished! M: OK, great. Here is your cake. Text 9 M: I got two letters this morning with job offers, one from the Polytechnic Institute and one from a language school in Pistoia, Italy. W: So, you’re not sure which one to go for? M: Exactly. The Polytechnic Institute is offering a two-year contract that could be renewed, (13) but the language school is only offering a one-year contract. It could be renewed, but you never know. W: I see. It sounds much less secure. (15) But you don’t need to think too much about having a steady job when you are only 23. M: That’s true. W: What about the salaries? M: Well, the Pistoia job pays much better in the short term. I’ll be getting about $22,000 a year there, but only $20,000 at the Polytechnic Institute. But the hours are also different. At the Polytechnic Institute, I’d have to do 35 hours a week whereas the Pistoia school is only asking for 30 hours of teaching. W: Hmm... M: And the types of teaching are so different. The Polytechnic Institute is all adults and mostly involves preparation for exams like the Cambridge certifications. (14) The language school wants me to do a bit of exam preparation, but also quite a lot of work in companies and factories. W: Well, that sounds much more varied and interesting. (15) I think that working at the language school 7 would be a wiser choice. (16) M: Right, but with the Polytechnic Institute position, I’d be stuck at the school all day.
