B Recently I accepted a challenge to join Naasih, a motivational speaker, on a voyage through India designed to refresh my spirit. After too many hours, Naasih and I arrived in the slum(贫民窟) just as the sun was breaking across the smoggy Delhi sky. It seemed as if the small houses extended for miles, an ocean of tin roofs and laundry lines. Finally, Naasih stopped and turned to me. “Give me your bag,” he said. I handed it to him. I had promised to follow his directions, and in return, I was hoping to find whatever I thought was missing from my life. “I will meet you back here at sunset,” Naasih said and walked away. I began to walk through the streets. No one paid too much attention to the tall, hairless man walking among them. My throat was dry, my stomach turning over with hunger. And then I saw a small house and I knocked softly on the door. A young, skinny man, no older than 25, came to answer it. As I soon found out, the man is named Sankar and he was a Lakers fan. I also learned that he was a recently graduated university student who had left his family to go after a dream of success in the big city. Instead, he had found work in the back of a restaurant. After lunch, Sankar took me to play basketball with a group of children in a trash-filled field down the road. The sun was beginning to fall as the laughter of the basket games echoed (发出回声) across the slum. I had been so caught up in my day with Sankar. I had started the morning in fear and exhaustion, but I was ending the day connected to something much larger. After the game, Sankar and I walked to Rata Road. There stood Naasih. He said, “You’re shining, Leon.” I had been knocked entirely out of my comfort zone, and I felt that wild burst of life that had been missing from my own. 4. Why did the author come to Sankar's home? A. To relieve his hunger and thirst. B. To respond to Naasih's request. C. To learn how disadvantaged people live. D. To play a game with him. 5. What can we learn about Sankar? A. He studies cooking in university. B. He finds a good job in the city. C. He doesn't live as he dreams D. He has a great talent for basketball. 6. What does Naasih mean by saying “You're shining, Leon” in the last paragraph? A. Leon is an inspiration to him. B. Leon has changed his state of mind. C. Leon is popular among the children. D. Leon is good at connecting with others. 7. What is the best title of the passage? A. The Pleasure from Indian Slums B. The Power of Sport Games C. A Voyage for Finding the Self D. A Chance to Make Acquaintances C 83-year-old Antonio Vicente has spent the last four decades of his life fighting against the trend. As Brazilian landowners cut down rain forests to make room for profitable plantations(种植园) and cattle grounds, he struggled to bring the jungles of his childhood back to life. “When I was a child, the peasants cut down the trees to make grasslands and charcoal, and the water dried up and did not come back,” he told the reporters, “I thought: ‘Water is valuable, no one makes water and the population will not stop growing. What is going to happen? We are going to run out of water.’” With only some donkeys and a small team of hired workers, Antonio Vicente set about bringing back the forest to his land. What started out as a weekend hobby soon became a permanent way of life, and Antonio recalls often spending whole days and nights in his young jungle, surrounded by rats and foxes, and eating banana sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Over the last 40 years, he has planted an estimated 50,000 trees on his 31-hectare land, which now make up a small but unique area of rainforest, and a haven for wildlife. As the forest grew, the water returned, and Antonio says that there are now over 20 water sources on his land that were no longer there when he bought it. Then the animals started making a home there, Today, the forest is alive with the sounds of birds and insects living there, and more species are settling in every year. “There are toucans(巨嘴鸟), all kinds of birds, squirrels, lizards, and even the boars are returning,” 83-year-old Vicente says, “If you ask me who my family are, I would say all this right here, each one of these that I planted from a seed.” 8.What do we learn about the Brazilian peasants? A. They wasted much water on farming. B. They relied heavily on rain forests for a living. C. They cared much about the environment. D. They focused on short-term profits 9.What used to be young Antonio’s biggest concern? A. Overpopulation. B. Polluted water. C. Loss of grasslands. D. Water shortage. 10.What does the underlined word “haven” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Trap B. Disaster C. Shelter D. Balance. 11.In the last paragraph, Antonio mainly expresses his ________ . A. affection for his forest B. thanks for his family C. deep love for rare birds D. pride as a successful farmer D When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they're usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it good for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too. Traditionally, coffee bushes are planted under the canopy(树荫)of taller trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow fullsun coffee. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren't any trees. With increased production come increased profits. Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases the local wildlife habitat, because native birds nest and hide from predators (捕食者) on the tall trees and migrating birds rest there. Furthermore, in the long term, the fullsun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides(杀虫剂) are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plants, and then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die.The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink. Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as “shadegrown” and “birdfriendly”.Sure, these varieties might cost a little more. But we're paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet.I think it's worth it. 12.Which opinion does the author agree with? A.People should buy fullsun coffee. B.Pesticides should be forbidden in coffee planting. C.Farmers should change the places to grow coffee. D. Shadegrown coffee should be supported. 13.Compared with the traditional method, what advantage does the fullsun method have? A.It can protect the ecosystem. B.It can promote people's health. C.It can increase the production of coffee. D.It can provide more nests for birds. 14.How do farmers get more land to grow fullsun coffee? A.They cut down trees. B.They move to other countries. C.They turn grassland into farmland. D.They buy more land from other farmers. 15.What can we learn from the passage? A.It is quite worthwhile to buy shadegrown coffee at any cost. B.Farmers all have realized the importance of protecting the environment now. C.South American farmers are taking action to plant coffee bushes in the traditional way. D.The fullsun method does good to the health of human beings in the long run. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(涂卡注意事项E=AB F=BC G=CD) How to interview for your dream job Here are some tips for getting your foot in the door and then maximizing your chance of getting that dream job.
