As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope(听诊器) and listened to the bird’s chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, “I’m sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away.” The woman was so disappointed and asked, “Are you sure?” “Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead,” replied the vet. “How can you be so sure?” she protested. “I mean you haven’t done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma(昏迷) or something.” The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black dog. As the duck’s owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his back legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed(嗅) the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later, he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also carefully sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back down, shook his head meowed softly and went out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, “I’m sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck.” The vet turned to his computer, pressed a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman. The duck’s owner, still in shock, took the bill. “150 dollars!” she shouted. “150 dollars just to tell me my duck is dead!” The vet shrugged, “I’m sorry. He accepted the offer, and began to work hard at every practice. About a month later, I had found out from other sources that John was a first-class tennis player, winning various junior awards in his home country. I went to him asking, “John, I really appreciate that you came out for the track team, but why didn’t you play tennis instead? It seems that would interest you a lot more, since you’re so good at it.” John answered, “Well, I like tennis, but you told me that you believed in me, and that you thought I could do well in track, so I wanted to try it for that reason.” From then on, I often remember my student’s reply. I, as a mother, was tired from the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slowed language development. As I accompanied her into the car, I felt desperate. My child’s language delay was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her, I felt like we both needed to be rescued. I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with the little girl I loved as when I left. Walking slowly toward the school’s playground gate, I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me. “You should have seen her today!” His breathy words were supported by excitement. I didn’t interrupt. “See that climber. ” He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall. I nodded. “Well, every day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top. ” He took a breath. “And today she did it!” He expressed his joy just as he’d witnessed her conquering Mount Everest! “She cheered and celebrated! I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me. My daughter had conquered her mountain. As she ran toward me, I recognized something I hadn’t before. I saw her perseverance(毅力). I saw her strength. If you have every thought of becoming a blood donor, just register to do it. And you should never worry about the donation. Just under a pint (around 470ml) of blood is taken at one sitting. This amount is no more than 13 percent of your total blood volume, and is quickly replaced by your body. It may come as a surprise, but whole blood is only rarely used. Different blood components are used to treat a range of conditions. None goes to waste. Red blood cells are frequently used to replace heavy blood loss after an accident, surgery or childbirth. White blood cells and antibodies(抗体)are used to help people fight infections if their immune system doesn’t appear to be responding to antibiotics(抗生素). Plasma(血浆),the straw-coloured fluid which carries the blood cells and contains proteins, are used to treat burned patients. First-time donors should be aged between 17 and 65, weigh at least 50kg and be in good health. If you have donated before, you can start being a donor again up to your 70th birthday. Although most people are able to give blood, some people who pose health risks or are at a higher risk of having come into contact with an infectious disease are no tasked to be donors. Pregnant women or those who have had a baby in the last 9 months should not donate blood. Blood has a very short shelf life. Some blood components can be kept longer than others, for instance red blood cells will keep for 35 days but platelets(血小板)for only five. Remember, you should wait at least 16 weeks before donating blood again. 32. What component of blood is used to treat burned patients?_____________ A. Plasma B. Red blood cell C. Antibody D. I must 41 that trains are not important means of transportation in the US, but I do have some 42 with them. When I was a child, growing up in a small town with very little 43 , we used to go to the station to watch the passenger trains coming in. There was something 44 about the steaming, roaring string of cars coming into view around the mountains, 45 growing larger and louder and finally 46 crowds of strangers onto the platform. I took my 47 train trip when I was ten years old. I went with my elder sister to visit our cousins six hundred miles away. The train—so loud and violent on the outside—was 48 and rocking inside. We were very excited, and as that was also our first time away from our parents, we felt somewhat frightened too. However, because I had 49 so much, I was a little disappointed when I was finally one of the passengers I had 50 for so long. As a college student, I 51 ride overnight train to my roommate’s hometown. We could never afford a 52 , so we played cards, sang, ate, read and talked 53 we finally fell uncomfortably asleep in the straight-backed seats. My idea that trains are 54 may come from the fact that my husband and I took the train on our honeymoon(蜜月假期), spending extra money to eat in the dining car, and 55 the window as the desert scenery slid past. Now, when I make a trip, I always fly or drive, and 56 are not a very important part of my life. 57 , every time I hear the train whistle faraway on a quiet night, I can always feel the sudden 58 in my heart to pack my bags and jump on board, entering a 59 world of motions(移动), sounds, sights and experience which just aren’t 60 in the dull environment of an airplane. 41. A. predict B. believe C. admit D. ensure 42. A. trouble B. experience C. photos D. fun 43. A. education B. money C. work D. entertainment 44. A. boring B. satisfying C. exciting D. terrifying 45.
