Supported by the Ladies'‎ ‎ Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school.‎ Mrs. Gutzlaff's comprador (买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic (外交的) world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff's school. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God.‎ 语篇解读:作者出生在南平的一个村庄里,长大后,在父亲的朋友的帮助下被父亲送到一所英文学校,而这么多年来,作者一直困惑当初父亲为什么会送他去英文学校而不是传统的中文学校。‎ ‎1.How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff's school?‎ A.Through his father's request.‎ B.Through his father's friend's help.‎ C.Through his own efforts at exams.‎ D.Through Mrs. Gutzlaff's influence.‎ 解析:选B 细节理解题。 Gutzlaff's comprador (买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that ... got me admitted into the school.” ‎ ‎2.Why did the author's parents put him into an English school?‎ A.It met with Chinese public opinion.‎ B.An English school was more influential.‎ C.He could become a successful interpreter.‎ D.Foreign trade with China was developing fast.‎ 解析:选C 细节理解题。 ‎ ‎3.What did the author think of his parents' decision to put him into an English school?‎ A.It was skeptical. B.It was wonderful.‎ C.It was thoughtful. D.It was mysterious.‎ 解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段第三句中的“It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school ...” ‎ ‎4.What does the underlined word “sequences” in the last sentence probably mean?‎ A.Results. B.Orders.‎ C.Series. D.Progress.‎ 解析:选A 词义猜测题。 故选A项。‎ B ‎(2018·湖北武汉调研)The end of the school year is in sight — Christmas cards, candy canes and of course, endofyear reports.‎ While most parents welcome an assessment of their kids' performance, they do not expect their own input to be evaluated. But a school in the U.K. is changing that. As well as assessing their students, they are dishing out grades to moms and dads. Parents that are really involved (参与) in their kids' education are rewarded with an A, and parents that haven't done their bit get a disappointing D.‎ The school, Greasley Beauvale Primary in Nottinghamshire, uses criteria such as whether moms and dads have attended school events such as plays and parentteacher evenings to decide on the grade. The school's principal, Donna Chambers, said that the scheme had been well received.‎ ‎“There were some critics, but my response was ‘well, it can't do any harm’. Between 15 percent and 20 percent of parents started out in the lower categories but now that has been reduced to just two percent,” she explained.‎ Chambers hopes that the scheme will help motivate parental ‎ involvement. “The system is important because you have got to get the parents on board from day one. That onehour initial conversation saying they could improve will pay_dividends for the rest of that child's academic life,” she said.‎ But while the scheme may be well intentioned, it is likely to be connected with parent shaming. There are lots of reasons why some moms and dads might not be involved in school activities such as work commitments, looking after younger children or caring for elderly relatives.‎ And of course, being involved in your kid's education doesn't begin and end at school. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes from helping with homework to keeping uniforms freshly laundered. And what about all the parents who stayed up sewing special costumes at the last minute? ‎ ‎5.What do schools usually do at the end of the school year?‎ A.Evaluate kids' performance. B.Make Christmas cards.‎ C.Divide candies. 故选A项。‎ ‎6.What does the school's principal Chambers say about the ‎ scheme?‎ A.It uses criteria to assess kids.‎ B.It has gained much acceptance.‎ C.It gives parents further education.‎ D.It improves kids' motivation for learning.‎ 解析:选B 细节理解题。 ‎ ‎7.What does the underlined part “pay dividends” probably mean?‎ A.Hold shares. B.Earn profits.‎ C.Sacrifice health. ‎ ‎8.What does the author think of parents' being involved in kids' education?‎ A.It adds to parents' burden.‎ B.It brings shame to parents.‎ C.It means far more than being graded.‎ D.It increases parents' commitment to education.‎ 解析:‎ 选C 推理判断题。 ‎
