Putting a smile on someone's face when you know they are feeling down in the dump, makes me feel good and warms my heart. How would you feel if you could not joke around with your wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friends, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don't know the person I'm joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is common courtesy(礼貌)to speak to others that are around you. I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their face. They don't get the joke that makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke? Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness in this present world. It drives people crazy. We all need to find a way to ignore the sadness and bring a little light into our lives. So, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together. 24. What is the author’s attitude towards the present world? A. Critical B. Positive C. Satisfied D. Indifferent 25. The phrase “busting a gut" in the third paragraph can be replaced by _______. A. explaining carefully B. speaking loud C. keeping silent D. laughing hard 26. According to the author, humor is useful in the aspect that _________. A. it makes people more confident B. it can pick up people’s spirits C. it can help get rid of the cruelty in the world D. it can help people get on well with others 27. In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to _______. A. introduce a practical way to get through daily life B. convince people of the power of humour C. encourage people to be humorous in daily life D. talk about his own understanding of humor 阅读答案 24-27. ADBC [三] As any plane passenger will confirm, a crying baby is almost impossible to ignore, no matter how hard you try. Now scientists believe they may have worked out why. A baby’s cry pulls at the heartstrings(扣人心弦)in a way while other cries don’t, researchers found. Researchers found that a baby’s cry can trigger unique emotional responses in the brain, making it impossible for us to ignore them—whether we are parents or not. Other types of cries, including calls of animals in great pain, fail to get the same response…suggesting the brain is programmed to respond specifically to a baby’s cry. A team of Oxford University scientists scanned the brains of 28 men and women as they listened to a variety of calls and cries. After 100 milliseconds --- roughly the time it takes to blink (眨眼) —two parts of the brain that respond to emotion lit up. Their response to a baby’s cry was particularly strong. The response was seen in both men and women—even if they had no children. Researcher Dr Christine Parsons said, “You might read that men should just notice a baby and step over it and not see it, but it’s not true. There is a special processing in men and women, which makes sense from an evolutionary(演化的)view that both men and women would be responding to these cries.” The study was in people who were not parents, yet they are all responding at 100ms to these particular cries, so this might be a fundamental response present in all of us regardless of parental status. Fellow researcher Katie Young said it may take a bit longer for someone to recognize their own child’s cries because they need to do more “fine-grained analysis”. The team had previously found that our reactions speed up when we hear a baby crying. Adults performed better on computer games when they heard the sound of a baby crying than after they heard recordings of adults crying. 28. A baby’s cry is difficult to ignore because it . A. keeps on crying B. makes people feel strong emotions C. causes people great pain D. cries harder than adults 29. The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ” A. remove B. cause C. avoid D. cure 30. What may Christine Parsons agree to? A. A crying baby makes no sense to people without children. B. Parents can hardly recognize their own babies’ cries. C. Men pay less attention to a crying baby than women. D. Almost everyone makes certain response to a baby’s cry. 31. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Why you can’t get a baby’s cry out of your head. B. How to recognize different babies’ cries. C. Why a baby is easy and likely to cry. D. How to prevent a baby crying. 阅读答案 BBDA [四] Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan. Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less selfconscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness. Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue. Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal. Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12inch plate instead of a 10inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass. 15. The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____________. A. their home comforts B. their body shape C. house buying D. healthy diets 16. A home environment in blue can help people ______________. A. digest food better B. reduce food intake C. burn more calories D. regain their appetites 17. What are people advised to do at mealtimes? A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast music. C. Use smaller spoons. D. Turn down the lights. 18. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Is Your House Making You Fat? B. Ways of Serving Dinner C. Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees, so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil-make the rain in-and also bind the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert. 28. The most important points of trees to man is that ________. A. they help him to stop drought and floods B. they help him to make money C. they give him cool D. they give him wood and other things 29. In many places forests slowly disappear because ________ . Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience. E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool. The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun , see a great movie perhaps-and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story. With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience. E-mail is also an inexpensive way stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college. We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways. 32. The purpose of this passage is to ________. A. explain how to use the Internet B. describe the writer’s joy of keeping up with the latest technology C. tell the merits(价值) and usefulness of the Internet D. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet 33. The use of E-mail has made it possible for the writer to ________. A. spend less time working B. have more free time with his child C. work at home on weekends D. work at a speed comfortable to him 34. According to the writer, E-mail has an obvious advantage over the telephone because the former helps one ________. A. reach a group of people at one time conveniently B. keep one’s communication as personal as possible C. pass on much more information than the later D. get in touch with one’s friends faster than the later 35. The best title for this passage is ________. A. Computer: New Technological Advances B. Internet: New Tool to Maintain Good Friendship C. Computers Have Made Life Easier D. Internet: a Convenient Tool for Communication 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. Recent development has made possible machines that print, cook, and serve foods on a mass scale(大规模地). And the industry isn’t stopping there. Food production With a 3D printer, a cook can print complicated chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. Not everybody can do that—it takes years of experience, but a printer makes it easy. A restaurant in Spain uses a Foodini to “re-create forms and pieces” of food that are “exactly the same”, freeing cooks to complete other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes and desserts it serves are 3D-printed, rather than farm to table. Nutrition Future 3D food printers could make processed food healthier. Hod Lipson, a professor at Columbia University, said, “Food printing could allow consumers(消费者) to print food with customized(定制的) nutritional content, like vitamins. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday’s bread from the supermarket, you’d eat something baked just for you on demand.” Challenges Despite recent advancements in 3D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome. Currently, most ingredients (烹饪原料) must be changed to a paste(糊状物)before a printer can use them, and the printing process is quite time-consuming, because ingredients interact with each other in very complex ways. On top of that, most of the 3D food printers now are limited to dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad. Some experts are doubtful about 3D food printers, believing they are better suited for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants. 28. What do we know about 3D printing and food ? A. The 3D printing industry is beginning to focus on food. B. With further development, it’s possible to use the 3D printing technology to print food. C. People have made possible 3D food printers. D. The 3D printing and food have developed into a perfect industry. 29. What benefit does 3D printing bring to food production? A. It helps cooks to create new dishes. B. It saves time and effort in cooking. C. It improves the cooking conditions. D. It contributes to restaurant decorations. 30. According to Paragraph 3, 3D-printed food . A. is more available to consumers B. can meet personal nutritional needs C. is more tasty than food in supermarkets D. can keep all the nutrition in food 31. What is the main challenge that prevents 3D food printing from spreading widely? A. The printing process is complicated. B. 3D food printers are too expensive. C. Food materials have to be dry. D. Some experts doubt 3D food printing. 【答案】28. C 29. B 30. B 31. C 【解析】这是一篇说明文。文章对3D打印技术在食物上的应用取得的进步进行了介绍,并且指出3D打印技术在食物上的应用仍面临着许多方面的挑战。 【28题详解】细节理解题。答案定位在第一段Recent development has made possible machines that print, cook, and serve foods on a mass scale(大规模地).可知人们已经制作出了可能的3D食物打印机,故选C。 【29题详解】推理判断题。Food production部分中叙述了没有经验的人可以用3D打印机做出复杂的巧克力雕塑和美丽的婚礼蛋糕,以及餐厅能够用3D打印出所有的菜肴和甜点,从而可以推断出3D打印的优势是节省了做饭的时间和精力。故选B。 【30题详解】细节理解题。根据Nutrition部分中的“Food printing could allow consumers to print food with customized nutritional content, like vitamins.”食品打印可以让消费者打印定制营养的食物,从而可以推断出3D打印出来的食物可以满足个人营养需求。故选B。 【31题详解】细节理解题。根据Challenges部分中的“most of the 3D food printers now are restricted to dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad.”可知,阻止3D打印食物进一步广泛使用的原因是原料必须是干的,含水多的肉和牛奶不能应用于3D打印因为很容易坏。故选C。 [十] It is widely acknowledged that nearly every kid might come across some kind of school bullying(欺侮), however, the age at which kids were first bullied could influence how strongly they are affected, suggests a new study. And, surprisingly, it is not the youngest kids who are hurt the most in the long term. Bullying can have long-lasting effects, but particularly when it begins in adolescence(青春期), the researchers say. people subjected to either verbal or physical bullying are known to be at greater risk of developing depression, anxiety disorders or to behave violently. But not everyone reacts in this way. Children who were bullied for the first time before they hit adolescence seem to get over it, but those who are bullied for the first time later on in adolescence seem to become more aggressive(富有攻击性的) or are more likely to turn to drinking as a means of coping with it. These are the conclusions of psychologists Matthew Newman and colleagues of Texas at Austin, US. The team gave questionnaires to nearly 1,500 college students about their experience of physical and psychological bullying before adolescence- before high school- and in late adolescence- at high school. They assessed mood and mental state, judging by signs of anxiety or depression, such as sleeplessness. The group was also questioned about how they would react to certain challenges, such as humiliation. People who were bullied all showed slightly higher levels of stress. But while those bullied earlier in life seemed to respond normally to provocation (煽动), people bullied for the first time late in adolescence are more withdrawn and sensitive to violence. There are also sex differences between those bullied for the first time during adolescence: females are more likely to react aggressively when provoked and males are much more likely to turn to drinking to escape bad situations. The best solution in all cases was strong social support, whether from friends, family or school. Those with no one to share their problems with suffered the most. So perhaps it is best not to shelter children completely from bullying early on, suggests Newman, “They may get stressed, but unhealthy coping really jumps out when they are bullied for the first time later on.” 33. What determines the degree of bullying’s effect on people according to the study? A. The reason why they are bullied. B. The place where they are first bullied. C. The person who first bullies them. D. The age at which they are first bullied. 34. What may happen to those first bullied later on in adolescence according to Newman and his colleagues? A. They seem to easily get over the effect of bullying. B. Some are likely to be more aggressive. C. Most of them will respond to bullying normally. D. Most of them are afraid of sharing their problems. 35. The sex differences between people bullied for the first time during adolescence are reflected in _______. A. the support they get from the society B. the effect bullying has on them C. the way they react to provocation D. the type of bullying they receive 【答案】33. D 34. B 35. C 【解析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了孩子第一次受的欺凌年龄对他们的影响程度,并且男女在面对羞辱会有不同的反应,因此最好不要在早期就庇护孩子,而是要给他们强有力的社会支持。 【33题详解】推理判断题。根据第一段的the age at which kids were first bullied could influence how strongly they are affected, suggests a new study. 研究表明,孩子第一次受欺凌的年龄对他们有着极其重大的影响,可推断出孩子第一次被欺凌的年龄决定了欺凌对人的影响程度,故选D。 【34题详解】细节理解题。根据第三段的but those who are bullied for the first time later on in adolescence seem to become more aggressive(富有攻击性的) or are more likely to turn to drinking as a means of coping with it. 可知,那些在青春期后第一次被欺负的人有些可能会变得更有攻击性,故选B。 【35题详解】细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的females are more likely to react aggressively when provoked and males are much more likely to turn to drinking to escape bad situations. 可知,第一次在青春期时被欺凌的人,女性更可能做出积极的反应,而男性更可能会转向酒精,以逃避恶劣的情况,因此,差别在于他们面对挑衅的方式,故选C。查看更多
